  • Bleh, finding myself writing fic bits that I really don't think I should post as thy 'violate' the Don't talk Politics or Religion rule. LOTS of Chimp Chump Trump/Hillary (I can't think of a good slander name for her) bashing. And a few things that if published could maybe get me in legal trouble for threatening a public figure.

Anyone else have this kind of problem now and then?

  • Not really because I keep it subtle.
An idiot named after a politician but the name is shortened or lengthened to make it less obvious (Clint or Will instead of Bill Clinton, Don instead of Donald for Trump). Or a characteristic of a villain that matches a known public figure (Since Hillary can't be shortened very subtly I'd do this for her, no examples as I don't want to start a political discussion), things like that.
And for ideologies, making at least some of the characters involved in the religious/political/social movement at least somewhat sympathetic, while showing the bad guys as the more extreme version usually works. So having a religious extremist, without going into massive detail about how bad they are, combined with a side kick or friend who is the same religion but nicer and more moderate/understanding. (If Humanity first plays a big role, have at least one or two people who honestly want to protect people and are trying to come up with some safe way to contain mutants, while others are 'kill em all' types)
It's all about being subtle and showing contrast unless you want to be political.

And probably at least one of his kids is a mutant. One of his wives would inevitably be a beautiful exemplar.
And a Trump resort in Karedonia after it became more respectable wouldn't be out of the question.

Well Trump's opinion on mutants is easy, it's straight H1! after all, mutants are all dangerous aliens and also Muslims. He'd stop them at the boarder, round them up and use them as forced labour to build his wall before sending them back! Hand them all the MCO to return them to were they came from!

Hillary, of course, is a mutant, the Mecca loving, traitor to America that she is, look how she bribed the US Department of the Paranormal to trick up that 'She's not a mutant' test result!

With Hillary if the mutant has money and will kindly make a donation to her foundation or hire a Clinton for a speech, they're A-OK. If not, get in the damn basket.

And to be really honest, I don't think we'll ever bring up too much politics, because anything we touch (apart from the barest, meager hints) is apt to offend half or more of the audience, no matter which way or party we present. The best thing to do, IMHO, is to present politicians by their characteristics, not their party, e.g. a greedy, sleezy politico, or an upright, honest, old-fashioned Southern Gentleman, or a businessman out to feather his own interests, or so on. Present individual issues ONLY when essential to the plot or story, and leave all mention of parties alone. I did that in one tale - Bikini Beach: The Senator (on Big Closet if you want to read it) - and believe it or not, of the e-mail and comments I got, half thought he was one party, and the other half thought he was the other.

Portraying a specific politician can tend to date a story; the one I mentioned above stays (again, IMHO) timeless because it's independent of times, events, or specific people. For these reasons, you won't see me doing much portrayal of individual politicians. Upside potential is small, downside risk of alienating a chunk of readers is large. That's also why we try to keep from political discussions away from the forums.

  • Even among the cabal we have some pretty different political stances. Some of us are mostly aligned with conservatives / Libertarians, some of us are mostly aligned with liberal / Progressives. But even with 'mostly aligned', we have differences in opinion that move us away from what the parties specifically have on their platforms. While I'm mostly an artsy fartsy Progressive, there are issues that are typically conservative that I support. And consider that for as many Libertatian supporters we have around here... it IS a TG fiction based story universe and most people involved are strong supporters of the LGBT community, etc.

But ya... I think its wise not to do too much with specific political figures in the stories... people make up enough false personality traits and information about them as it is, there's no justification for doing an even bigger hachet job on them just because its fiction.

  • Trump in the WU in one WhatIF is very pro mutant. ( Shadowsblade's Vantier over on BCTS and on FM )
Nothing I have seen in Canon or other WhatIF is as explicit about Trump's attitude.

From what I have seen IRL, I would suspect Trump would be a pro MCO and H1 supporter while Clinton would be more Pro DPA. ( actual government department instead of an independent organization )

Stupidity is a capitol offense, a summary not indictable one.

  • I'd hoped the text would stand on its own and the fact that Mr. Trump was on the board would be proof of his intentions. Do you honestly think some like Tywystyr would allow an MCO or H1 supporter on the board?

Or the fact that all of Mr. Trump's wives have been supermodels and tens at least (can you say exemplar?) Would be the final clue. But evidently not, since I have to spell things out.

So here is your WOG: Donald Trump is not a member of humanity first, nor does he support the MCO, nor is he a racist, bigot, or homophobe.

  • Being sort-of-safely half a world away, I would offer the following points referring Mr. Trump:

    1. His personal history has so many confusing elements that you can take the fictional version of him pretty much in any direction and STILL be consistent with the real-world Trump, depending on when you establish the divergence. (For Whateley, the divergence is sometime before 2006, obviously)

    2. Arguing about him, or Hillary for that matter, -- even about the fictionalized versions of them -- in this particular year is a sure way to get into a flame war. That goes for most prominent politicians, in fact, no matter if they are named Ted Cruz or Elizabeth Warren. So let's please stick to fictional politicians. Argue Jed Bartlett against Frank Underwood all you want.

In more serious, yes, most teenagers (G2 has one exception already, admittedly), don't care about politics, so, it's not a major factor, though I'll admit I've been guilty of injecting politics (but again, the story was from a more political point of view) as a factor (outside an aside note in Apple, but that wasn't me!) I'll admit that I did not like the named RL politician I targeted for some.. unkind words, but I only based his actions in story as a logical extension of what he (or she), had already done, or will do.

We haven't mentioned the current sitting president, mostly because A: No reason to, and B: we haven't decided.

I'll say this, it's NOT Trump, though the person is Republican.
