  • How well do you think titian wire would work as chain-mail, besides being expensive?

it would stop most perferation, but it would do nothing to distribute the force of the impact

    Titanium wire?

The big problem is that the mass of the armor is part of what's protecting you by absorbing kinetic impact.

Also, the links that make up chain mail move against one another. Titanium, like aluminum, isn't very resistant to abrasion and both metals get their corrosion resistance by forming a metal oxide layer on the surface. A person is usually sweating profusely when using armor, so the last thing you'd want is having that oxide layer being abraded while in contact with salt water.

For the Whateley Universe, it might also be useful to remember that titanium doesn't get along well with oxygen or nitrogen at high temperatures.

  • I didn't realize that anyone looked to mail to absorb kinetic impact in the first place. Isn't that what gambesons are for?

    Titanium wire?

No, TITAN wire. From the Wiki: Adamantium

Failed or Denatured Adamantium contains sub-domains of aligned metal-ceramic matrix, and thus, is valuable as a source material to be ground up and embedded in a flexible carrier - thus forming Titan wire; in this form, it retains most of the desired properties of pure Adamantium, such as impact resistance and some magic resistance, but it is flexible and the carrier material (wire) can be shaped and cut. Titan wire, while strong and durable, is vulnerable to sufficiently strong magic because the Adamantium particulates are distributed unevenly in the carrier wire, thus leaving microscopic gaps through which strong magic can penetrate.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Gambesons do cushion the blow along with making the armor easier to wear, and if you're using something like titanium the cloth might also keep opened links from being imbedded in a wound.

Mail may be your best friend against slashing blades and some puncture wounds, but at some point in the arms race you'll need to be looking at plate. It also helps to close the links by riveting or welding, but that's not so easy with a reactive metal like titanium.

Of course, if your opponent's weapon is EX-5 strength and a fist, it probably doesn't matter what the mail is made of.

  • Mind you, Cryptic misspelled it as 'titian', making me wonder if Nancy Clue Drew had manifested with Diamond Lil's powerset.

  • Well, the problem there is that 'titian' is a valid adjective (as a color, usually applied to hair color as per the stock description of Miss Drew; it is derived from the works of the artist Titian , who used it frequently). So not only might the spell checker give it a pass if it is in its dictionary, but a grammar checker would likely determine that 'titian' was a valid modifier to 'wire'.

Still, no harm done, I think most of us knew what you meant. And besides, I'll take any opportunity to mention Mabel Maney's parodies of Nancy Drew and Cherry Ames which I get (I'm not as enamored of the Jane Bond series, but Maney is usually pretty funny all around so others may like them more).

Now I kind of want to see someone use titanium wire for the coolness factor, right up to the point their opponent ignites it.

This would make an excellent passive-area trap for a flame manifestor or a pyrokinetic.

of course forged titanium is used to steer very large cylindrical objects traveling at high velocities through the atmosphere, (falcon 9 first stage grid find) so it would be a good weapon against flame manifestors
