  • Do we ever get a mention of what heros are active in the San Francisco area?

  • There is a fairly large team, it's in the Loose Cannons stories.

Hmm I've have to go though that story, and see what I can adapt for my purposes. I wonder if any of them use acoustic attacks, as that would be kind of handy.

  • Uhh, this is great, I was wondering about this myself as the protagonists of my little fanfic both come from San Francisco.

    Thanks for this :D

Given that half or so of the team is undefined, go ahead and make your own if there isn't one.

  • Aren't acoustic weapons banned? That's a major plot point of Silver Linings anyway.

  • They're heavily restricted. And if you use them indiscriminately you're more likely to brought up on charges even if you're a hero.

    Cool.

Less an inside joke, and more me making fun of bagpipes. :D

Generally speaking, a sonic weapon is any device that incapacitates the enemy using vibrations through the air. Frequently they do this by utilizing inaudible frequencies that mess with human inner ear function, but you can also do tricks with resonant frequencies, or just extremely high decibel sound. In the WU (and possibly real life, I'm not sure), sonic weapons are strictly controlled because a significant portion of the population has bad reactions to the more usual sonic weapons.

  • in the real world sonic weapons just require too much power to be worth it. people have died due to lab accidents with sound generators. But they arn't devicer that would be practical to deploy in a combat zone. for lethal applications a gun, or even a laser is easier and for cowd controll a water cannon is probably easier and less problematic.

Though I have heard of high pitch tone gwnerators being used as teenager repelants. And even hight pitch tone generators are someyimes used to repell mosquitos.

  • There are some devices you can put on your car that act like a whistle to warn and scare animals while driving. They're not perfect, but they help enough to make them worth the money if you live in a rural area. The tone is high pitched enough that people can't hear it.

Ah but I do 'hear' those dumb whistles as the trucks come down the road. More annoying than anything.

  • That is also from all the parts that catch the wind. On a regular car it's inaudible. And if you think it's annoying think what an animal feels listenng to it.

  • Different jurisdictions will have different laws, but the general rule is that sonic weapons that cause actual injuries (as opposed to shriekers like the one Gryphon used, at least ones which which stun and disorient without causing long-term deafness) are solidly illegal, though if it has a significant degree of directionality, that may be a mitigating factor. The main argument against them is that most sonics are omni-directional, area-effect weapons - you can't aim them at a specific target, so they cause tons of collateral damage. Also, high-power shriekers can break windows over a range of twenty meters or more, so even when they are technically legal the can open the user up to lawsuits for property damage.

Most sirens do have a fair amount of directional control with their power, and it is an inherent part of their powers in any case, so they don't get covered by these laws. However, if they are indiscriminate about using those powers, you can bet that the MCO will land on them hard - just like with any mutant misusing their powers (not that some MCO agents need an excuse to harass any mutant they come across).
