  • I was thinking about odd clubs and the such in Whatley, one of the clubs I was wondering about would be a rocketry club, that got me wondering with devisors and gadgeteers would there be one? Or would the Admin shut it down for fear of the students giving the school the ability to launch a first strike? :woohoo:

We've seen the Gearheads with Loophole, what about a Flight Club? A bunch dedicated to making high performance aircraft.
An Astronomy club, with a sideline into Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, that finds something of course.
Is there a Robotics Club? One that concentrates on more 'sensible' projects than Tiny.

    Thanks.

Many people hear voices when no-one is there.
Some are called 'mad' and shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day.
Others are called 'writers' and they do pretty much the same thing.

  • A flying club would be cool, but not for planes, for students who can fly by themselves. They could practice stunt and precision flying.

  • You've hit on one of the odder topics for Whateley Academy. There are three organizational student groups. Cliques, Clubs, and Combat Teams.

Cliques are groups with common interests or just groups of friends, they have no formal organization, nor are they officially recognized by the school. The Nations was a Clique that became a Club.

Clubs are formal groups of students that have a sponsor, and are recognized by the school. They qualify for the use of school facilities, Sim time, and some funding.

Combat Teams are groups of students that do combat training together. Some are self formed, others are made by the school administration. The administration sometimes changes the membership of teams, but it is unknown if they do this for self formed teams. Some teams are club sponsored, The Nations has two teams, Venus Inc. has a team, the Cape Squad has a team.

The closest to a robotics club is the Robo Jox, and they work on Tiny Tim. They likely work on other stuff too, as several have power armor.

Edit: At least this is my understanding of the differences. There is also overlap, as the extended Team Kimba is a Clique, with the core being a Combat Team.

What's odd about that? Every school I've been to had cliques, clubs, and teams.

Not really, some schools, especially smaller schools have less certain groupings. Where there are no real 'cliques' and people are just friends. There is a tendency for for people to not only be a part of one group but actually part of many. Or they could be no distinct groupings whatsoever and people are just a bit more distant from one another.

You see it a bit in Whateley academy but not to the extent you should. It's like wondercute and the kimbas + auxiliaries, many people are members of both groups but it doesn't spread far enough. In a school as small as Whateley mad should be able to talk to anyone in a friendly manner given the number of groups she is in, everyone in freshman year should be a friend of a friend.

This entire opinion is based on my own high school experience, please note I went to highschool with a somewhat similar size to Whateley as stated at the beginning of the stories with a similar grade structure but covering 5 years instead of 4. The biggest difference between the two schools ignoring super powers would be that one is a boarding school, which in my opinion should foster even more closeness between students, but what do I know, I live in hippy central.

Also how has no one yet mentioned the Robins?

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

  • Well not since skeet shooting was introduced during the hours when the flying club was out as with the introduction of skydiving. Go figure.

With most schools this would probably be the same, but one thing to consider is the number of different people from so many walks of life and situations. It's not like they all come from the same town, they're from all over the world. So the people in the same cottages and classes are well connected, with some kids knowing people all over the school, but it's still much more structured with students forming groups outside the cottage with peopel from a similar background from them and less so with others.
Also from a writing standpoint, having the number of friends and acquaintances limited is much easier to write about.

Because even the Cliques are recognized by the administration. And while my school had clubs, none of them sponsored intramural teams.
