Merged Revisiting the possibility of Champion round-robin

  • Some time back, I started writing a fanfic covering the death of Harry Holbrook and Ted Trent's accession to the role of the Champion, but like most of my longer pieces I ran into trouble with it. I am thinking of revisiting it, but when I first mentioned it on the old forum, I proposed writing a round-robin series covering the origins of the various Champions, starting with Holbrook discovering his powers and following through with the events leading to the deaths of him and each of his successors, and how the new Champions were chosen and what they did when they took on the role. My story would be the second of these, if I ever got anywhere with it.

Is anyone interested in joining in on this? I sort of have an outline already set up, but no real specific ideas for most of them.

    Part I - Ascension (Hal Holbrook, 1929)
Part II - Fall from Olympus (Ted Trent, 1953)
Part III - Succession (Steven Briggs, 1969)
    Part IV - ? (Wayne Sotherby, 1981)
Part V - On the List (Alan Jaye, 1995)
    Part VI - ? (Michael Forster, 2002)

Also, should I post the part I've already started, either here or in 'Project Discussion'? I can definitely use some advice and beta-reading on this one, and on a different one, too (one covering a possible scenario for David Goodkind's emergence), and I wasn't sure which, if any, of the fora I should post the work-in-progress versions. Any advice on that?

  • Remember that Mrs. Carson was Champion between III and IV.

  • That's true, but I would expect that to be in Part 5, since she only held the Champion Force long enough to get it to Champion IV, I think.

And yes, the name I picked for Champion V is a reference - two, actually. It shouldn't be hard to figure out who I named him after, I think. The name I chose for Champion VI was just sort of picked semi-randomly, in that I didn't have anyone specific in mind as a namesake.

  • In the WU, Champion is kind of like Maris, Niles' wife on Frasier. He is often used as a reference and the pinnacle of the heroes of the world but we have never interacted with him directly. There is SOMEONE at Whateley who is waiting to accept the Champion force in case of emergency but we have no idea who it is.

I would LOVE to see the Champion stories fleshed out and one about the life of someone who knows they are on the doorstep of greatness. Such a life for a teen must be filled with anxiety, self-doubt, and a tremendous fear of the unknown. I would love to see that explored.

    Thanks!!!
