  • For a story I'm writing, I need someone who can write Spanish to translate a short conversation, no more than 200 words.
Can anyone give me a hand?

  • I want it to be really good. And having translated Chinese to English and vice versa, I know it's limitations.
As for what its for you'll just have to wait.

  • Yeah, it's a lot better than nothing, but it still mangles some things. For example, if you translate the following into Spanish and then back to English, it not only comes out a bit stilted, but Google seems to reverse who is giving who a lift:

Original wrote: "Yo, what's shaking your bacon, man?" "Oh, you know. Just tooling around on my bike." "Cool, cool. Hey, I was wondering if you could give me a lift to the airport?" "Sure, let me grab another helmet." "Uh, couldn't we take the car?" "Car's in the shop, dude. It's the bike or your feet. Hope you don't have any luggage." "Uh, yeah, nevermind. I'll just go ask Stacy." "Suit yourself!"

Result wrote: "Yo, what's shaking Bacon, man?" "Oh, you know. Just hanging around on my bike." "Cool, cool. Hey, I was wondering if I could give a lift to the airport?" "Sure, let me grab another helmet." "Uh, we could not take the car?" "The car is in the shop, friend. It's the bike or foot. The hope has no baggage." "Uh, yeah, whatever. I'm going to ask Stacy." "Do what you want!"

"The hope has no baggage." Such profound; very wisdom.

  • Automatic translators deal badly with informal speech. They do much better with formal, regular text.

Also, remember that they are intended to work from (unknown language) to (familiar language), not the other way around. Any oddness should be smoothed over by the reader.

Now, I'm not anywhere close to fluent in Spanish, but... if you can't find anyone better, I can give it a try. There ARE strong similarities between Spanish and Portuguese (my native tongue), and I have some passing familiarity with reading Spanish, so I probably could find anything too weird.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Thanks Sir Lee, I'll keep you in mind.
The lines are pretty basic stuff, but important to the story.
