  • I have been a follower of WA for almost two years now although I haven't posted anything before today. I am a Canadian university student and my interests are science, mathematics, politics (both Canadian and American), religion, mythology, science-fiction, and fantasy.

  • Well, well, well. Welcome to the site. Be fair thee warned. Politics don't mix with magic. And I hope your not into that new math.

*scratches head how 5x3 does not = 15, but 3x5 does.

Anyway enjoy the site, leave a review for our always hungry writers and have fun.

  • Symmetry is not adhered to by some number systems, like vector spaces. Don't discriminate against non-field mathematics.

  • Greetings, Nukestar. Don't mind the craziness by some of us sometimes, most people just feel like they can truly be themselves on here and that brings out the wacky and silly a lot more than usual.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

I'm not against you. Really. Just the teacher marking it wrong for the 3rd grader who doesn't understand multiplication yet.

  • It's really amusing to use alternative number systems and confuse the hell out of people
    5x5=19

  • Hexidecimal

There are a lot of computer geeks that will get that, I still prefer "1 + 1 = 10"

  • There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those who know this is a binary joke
Those who don't know it's a binary joke
and those who know that it's really a trinary joke.

  • In highschool I would change people's calculators to hexadecimal and refer to it as 'hexing' their calculators. Neither binary nor octal have the same pun potential.
    also have this 2+2=10.85840734641...

  • Of course using pinary is not a very rational thing to do.

Perhaps you can follow this: 7x13=28

Hey Costello proved it to Abbott

  • I wish I learnt base 8 in school, it would have been more interesting than the parabolas we spent 2 and a half years on. (parabolas become even more infuriating when you realize that objects only follow parabolic paths on a flat Earth with no atmosphere.)

Maybe, but without parabolas, we wouldn't have clamshell mirrors , and those things are way cool. (Plus all the telescopes and things which use them)

  • But the thing is, we never talked about the applications of parabolas in optics, the only application we discussed was ballistics. Also the optimum shape of radio dishes is actually an eclipse with a focal point at the detector and a focal point at the source, but the eccentricity of such ellipses is very close to 1 and therefor are well approximated by a parabola.

Actually, it's worse than that.... gravity on a flat disk large enugh to not worry about edge effects gets *really* odd.

But I'm glad to see someone else who knows that projectiles on a sphere generally follow segments of an ellipse, unless they are sufficiently above escape velocity.
