  • Just a short hello and introduction of myself. I came across a Whateley set of stories that are not part of cannon, but really caught my attention back about December. I recently got a bit inspired by this Authors work to try writing a story of my own. With my right now looking to get the ok from authors of some of the characters I wish to also use in my story to establish a character of my own in my story. not sure if it will go beyond the one story but it is nice to be inspired by so many to even try writing in this fashion instead of the roleplay style of stories I have done as a player or Game master in the past. I just hope to have what I try to write live up to what I have read and enjoyed since discovering this setting.

  • Welcome to the community, RavenOcelot! (Cool name, btw.)

Sounds like you're wanting to write a fanfic then? And using some of the canon characters in it as well? If that's the case, you'll find that we have a whole section here on the forums devoted to that kind of thing, and most of the canon authors are usually happy to answer questions and such that you might have (provided the answers don't need to be kept secret for story/plotline reasons).

Also, just curious, but what were the stories that led you to finding us here?

  • The Shadowsblade stories are what first introduced me to Whateley. It is his character that is sport of an inspiration to my own story in my head so far. And yes Definitely a fanfic as I doubt where I am thinking will get considered Cannon. I have already been looking in some of the areas of the boards to glean more information on characters I wish to place in the story. Honestly I hope to hold true enough to the characters as seen in cannon that atleast those who read it can enjoy and feel it is part of the setting even if it is just a fanfic.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome NeoMagus.

  • The best way to find information about the characters is to read the stories. :) At this time, we have over 9 million words of canon storyline... much of which covers the 2006-2007 school year. We have recently started moving into the second school year in the original timeline, but also have a second canon author group working on a second major plotline ten years into the future (school year 2016-2017).

An alternate way to find 'specific' information is to reference the fan created/maintained WIKI.

As you recognized, the Shadowsblade stories are fan fic and one of the big factors in canon WU is that we try to create a much more scientifically sound version of mutant paranormals than the main comic industry types. For the most part, while they are superhuman... they aren't so powerful that they are disconnected from their humanity. Most mutants can be shot and injured by regular firearms. It might not KILL them outright due to reduced penetration or regenerative abilities... but only a couple types of mutants can actually completely ignore the potential of damage from baseline weapons. It's often noted that most of the Marvel Universe is relatively low powered compared to the Avengers, for example, but even the Avengers would have a tough time squaring off with DC's Justice League. We are (intentionally) below both of those. Whateley Universe mutants are more likely to be compared with characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and so forth.

Skill is as important (if not more) than brute force power, and there are 'badass normals' who can challenge the strength of most mutants (there are baseline Martial Artists teaching at WA, as well as baseline mages and psychics in the world - mutants have advantages that allow them to skip years of difficult training and self discipline to get there... but in many cases, the baseline can be just as powerful).

But, as we include in the disclaimer, fan fiction / Independent Fiction (our new name for it) is what it is. It's not canon so you only have to worry about the mechanics and character personalities if you want to. You're welcome to try to fit close to canon if you wish, but if the story you want to tell requires you to go down other paths... go for it.

    Welcome, enjoy. :)

  • Kristin thank you for the great information. I have found reading a lot of the stories that feature characters I wish to have share space in my story is a great help. I am still at this point trying to just lay out a basic story arch I wish to follow. I still have a lot to learn and research before I really get down and dirty to trying to write.

Welcome to the site. But you say you can't say how much you loved the original characters. Is that to say that you didn't love them or you won't say that you loved them so that you don't offend the newer members characters as you just love them now. But then you could be saying that you can't say because you won't say and if you won't say then we can't say what we won't say. But say what you will and be happy.

Me? I'm on happy juice and its not even the middle of the day. Well not here really, but somewhere is where I can get my happy juice.

Oh and welcome to the site.

Edit: Oh and don't be shy on how you feel about the characters. I can't say that I won't.
