  • Moderately-long-time lurker, new poster here. :)

Looking forward to being an active part of this community and hopefully get into gear and write the Whateley story I've been working on for a while now.

I doubt it'd be very good, to be honest, but at the very least it'd be good writing practice.

Anyway, nice to finally be able to write to you all.

In case anyone cares: I'm agender, my favourite colours are blue, brown, and green, my favourite canon authors are Diane Castle and Morpheus, and my favourite fanfiction author is Domoviye. (Though Domoviye could really use a beta for those homophones and excessive comma usage)

  • Greetings, Naomi.

Good to see yet another former lurker choosing to jump in feet first to be more involved. We'll be happy with whatever contributions you want to make, as long as you're courteous and respectful when doing so (that's a rule for everyone).

As far as your writing is concerned, don't put too much pressure on yourself. We won't hunt you down if it isn't perfect. And yes, as you said, at the very least it's good practice for future writing.

So yeah, welcome to the club.

  • Welcome to the new forum. If your a previous member with certain privileges be sure to pm those in charge. I understand that they have an executive bathroom where unlike us low peons don't have to give up half their blood to obtain the key to. If your not, there's a high demand for O negative with a hint of peppermint.

Of course once we're done we don't get a refund and the guard inside just flips us out. Literally. No cushion to break our fall except the floor. Marble at that.

Of course take a look around. Its highly advisable to read through the rules (they've been on me to do that for days now) and look through some of the forum messages if you happen to have an Ipad, Inkspot, or some other form of device whereas it concerns screen resolutions. Of course I never concern myself with that. I'm to drunk to figure out what I'm reading.

So have fun, read the stories and please, please, please leave a kind note for them for their appreciation. (There I did my service announcement now can I have the keys to the shackles?)

As a few may tell you, don't mind me, I have no mind.

What is - was. What was - is.

  • Speaking of writing... about how long should a story be before one requests fanfiction author status and making the first post? Outside of the micro-scene thread, I mean.

  • Fan Fiction author status isn't so much about how long your writing is, so much as it's about your desire to regularly contribute your work. That can mean you spend your time working on a single longer project (we've got several that have been ongoing for YEARS if you're counting back to the old forums), or you regularly submit various smaller works (we've got a few authors that do that too). So length of submission isn't really an issue for requesting access to the Fan Fiction Author usergroup, though it does become important if you plan to eventually publish your fanfiction officially as an article here on this site.

  • Thanks, though I would think some minimum length would be considered preferable, socially, as a sign that this person has put in notable effort into it.

  • I'm generally recommending that authors do not try to attempt to publish pieces smaller than vignettes.. in the vicinity of 10k words (or the equivalent of 20-25 8x11 pages, single spaced between lines but double between paragraphs, with a standard 12 pt font and regular margins). Or standard weekly content release is about twice that, a 20-25k word novella (roughly 1/5 the length of a novel). I'm willing to consider publishing collections/anthologies of short stories and scenes; but it would have to be a collection of reeeeally good shorts, with a common thread or sub-arc of some sort. This is mainly because the amount of time necessary to prep smaller pieces is actually not that much less than what it takes for a novella or larger work... but people can and do create far more of them. So its a bit of a work load issue. Too many people presenting short stories to be published and things will quickly grind to a halt.

  • Note, Kristin is talking about "promoted" FanFiction work, work that will be released through the "Content" tab of the site. Smaller works released for comment an to help Authors "grow" are acceptable in the FanFiction forums where they can be worked on and (if wanted) commented on amongst the community.

Over time, if these grow to be larger works suitable for promotion ... :D

The Fabrication lab only requires a site login, it is just part of the forums, the Tunnels section.

  • Not quite. The Fabrication Lab is part of the forums, yes; but you are unable to create a new thread there unless you request fanfic author status to Kristin.

As for when you should move out of the Micro Scenes and into the Fab Lab... I guess it's partly a matter of mindset. If you have anything resembling a plan for a longer tale, you might want to move to the Fab Lab. A micro-scene is little more than a throwaway gag, with no follow-up; most are humorous, but they don't have to be.

But sometimes things change, and the throwaway gag evolves into something else. I might mention the series of micro scenes regarding the investigation on the assassination of Jadis, sometime in the future; that could and should be promoted into the Fab Lab.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Thank you Sir Lee, that was basically what I was trying to say in my previous post further up the thread, but you managed to say it rather more succintly than I did. :)

  • Hi, Naomi
    Great, to, meet, you!
And thanks for calling me your favourite. Just so you know if any of my fanfiction is published, I do spend more time going over homophones and comma's. I've been told I abuse comma's too much, so I focus on that when improving my work.

  • You're very welcome. :)

I'm glad to read that your editing will focus on those issues.

As for my writing... not very much. I'm currently trying to write a Whateley-verse AU story and it's... progressing mildly well, I guess? I doubt the first draft will be anything even approaching "good", but it's still good practice.

Don't worry - it's not you, Dom. Too many people write 'stream of consciousness' and then seem to think that something is missing, so they start applying punctuation from a salt shaker, liberally spreading commas all over. Seldom to they use semicolons - those are tricky! ARGHHH! MORE COMMAS! ( :) )
There are a number of very, very common grammar errors. (And I'd die of embarrassment if my grammar-Nazi high-school teacher heard, because she'd the "I told you so" dance right in my face.) We probably need a thread in 'common grammar errors', don't we?

Anyway, when we have time, we'll help.

More comma's need more comma's. Stop the bells, need more comma's.

I'll prepare a thread on that today.
I actually do edit as part time work and taught some basic grammar to ESL students for 7 years. Just editing your own work is a pain and takes about twice as long as doing someone elses.

I do apologies to the Crytal Hall Community for Elrod's little rant. In my defence my father was an English teacher, so not listening to anything he said is just growing up.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it, though I do promise Elrod to stop sending you stream of conscience with sugared commas :p

Maybe I just a tad over corrected there.

Oh well, that's the point of writing stories and getting corrections, hopefully soon I get a Goldilocks story!

  • Nice to meet another fellow former lurker, Naomi. I would love to read anything you post, always up to reading Whateley fanfiction and seeing others take on the setting.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • Actually, you cannot post in the Fab Lab without the promotion. You don't "have" to take the added step of going for publishing status... but there are, indeed, parts of the fan fiction forum that you only can access/post to if you have approval to do so. And thus, which can be taken away if abused.

Way back in the old days, when I was writing with Angela Rasch and editing for JulieO, Itinerant, Scott Ramsey, and other folks, I wrote up a few pieces on various grammar subjects and posted them at BC/TS. I'll try to dig them up and post them here, although I believe the appropriate spot for posting them is in The Tunnels/Tool Room.
