Finally finished the move form California to here in Georgia!
Woof!!!!!!!!!!
It's way different here....ads for gun shops on the highways...fireworks places that sell 'insane and dangerous" not the """safe and sane""" BS from cali!
then add the road kill changed from ...your random spot or fluffy to...Armadillos???
Now have to get in the local grove, find a house to buy and make new buddies!

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

I think I was in my 40s before I saw a live armadillo on the side of a road.
But... Florida, so there's no telling what it really was.

Sorry E.E., and Light, but that loony bin is where need to escape to... the Bay is, and always shall be, home to me, something I could tell even before I left Connecticut to go there. It was a terrible mistake to leave, and equally terrible one for me to ever set foot in Georgia, though mostly because it meant dealing with family, and especially, living with my father for six years.E. If I ever do return to Berkeley, I do not intend to travel more than 100km away from Sproul Plaza ever again, nor go any further east than Livermore.

The coolest fireworks in the world are built in California you know, launched there and in Florida, one used one is on display in Hawthorne... Nowhere else are reusable fireworks that land themselves made. Actually there might be a couple other states but they aren't orbital.lighttech wrote: not new to WA but new to Atlanta!

Well if I was Musk I might buy some of those fireworks
but since I can't even buy an exotic naked cat for that cool villain look he rocks! ---lol
I'll buy these right here in GA
besides...you should have seen me at the local firearms shop...like a kid in a candy store on x-mas with 500$ in his pocket!
now I can buy that competition pistol that I want...banned in cali because its color varies form the normal one and a few extra parts...yep cali gun laws are that silly!
want a green glock? or tan?? Nope in cali...but you can buy the black one??? for example!

VAFB??? Does that have anything to do with spaceflight??? It's not NASA right, as they only have the JPL and a few other facilities in California. Sorry, not Merican, but keep a eye on NASA. Thinking of getting a job there once I've got my masters. Beats the usual stuff at EB games.

Uh... you know that California is also HQ of this little company called SpaceX? They have launch facilities in California (at VAFB), Texas (under construction) and Florida (Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center)..

Vandenberg air force base VAFB
was to be the west coast space shuttle launch site the year if blew up in 86 in Florida...then they stopped it when the blast damage was assessed and the fact the abase would have been totaled by a 'whoops' that big.
but when NASA or shhhhhCIA launches a "weather sat" (SPY SAT!!!!!!!!!!!!) they do it mostly from there...better trajectories towards east (China -russia)
then spaceX uses it
But lets not forget the history of NASA in SOCAL all the space shuttles were built here..the moon lander by North American...then Edwards is a little test place in the hot Desert...JPL that my mom worked for during the change of the Redstone rocket project to NASA
And if you get a job with NASA...for the sake of your wallet take one in Texas or Florida...because the TAXES in California will KILL you slowly ...ever so slowly! Then add house cost at 500,000 for a SMALL 3 bedroom kind of near LA.................like 70 miles near.....lol

actually VAFB is used for Polar and retrograde orbits, if you want something over one location (GEO) you launch from Cape Canaveral or Wallops, imaging sats are often launched from there for the polar orbit as you can get over everywhere some of the time.lighttech wrote:

SpaceX launches payloads from one of their best non-NASA customers out of VAFB pad slc 4e, Iridium, back in December the Iridium Next 4 launch had a beautiful twilight phenomenon currently their only active fairing catcher ship operates on launches out of there onlyCrazyMinh wrote:

only if you're Ariane Space, besides, Falcon 9 often puts payloads in a supersyncronous transfer orbit which makes it take less energy to circularize than most launches out of Kourou, and Falcon Heavy CAN do direct insertion, (mind you Falcon Heavy even if you recover just the side cores if it wasn't so cheap would be considered overkill for just about everything)Sir Lee wrote: Of course, if you are serious about making the most of your rocket for a geostationary orbit, you launch from Kourou. Unfortunately, after a bit of an explosion, the Alcântara launch site got sorta... stuck in the mud.

mhalpern wrote: Of course in the US if you are interested in polar orbits there's more options than VAFB if your rocket is small enough, there's a bear of a place in Alaska some small launchers are interested in (Kodiac) and one American company decided to go all the way out to New Zealand and build the most scenic launch facility in the world (Rocket Lab).
I am pretty sure the grandiosely-named Spaceport America in New Mexico is expected to run both polar orbit and GEO flights eventually, though IIUC so far all launches out of there have been sub-orbital tests. Whether any operational launches will even be run there remains to be seen.

We don't talk about that waste of NM taxpayer money, its inland, which makes it more than inconvenient for any rocket that launches vertically, and it's in the middle of nowhere so it's inconvenient to get to.Schol-R-LEA wrote:

As far as what you can do in the south (fireworks, things that go boom). Pretty much everything is legal. Living "up in them thar backhills" where I do, every holiday where fireworks are set off is a very interesting light and sound experience. Some of the stuff that gets set off sounds like its military grade high explosives and can shake my windows.. that's with my house being at least a half-mile away from every other home.
Paraphrasing a line out of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil "everyone is heavily armed and drunk".
