  • I exist!

    …I don't like introductions.

    … I do like ellipsis.

    …Goodbye.

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

    Um guys?

Am I going to need to discuss with you 'welcoming' again?

That's kind of what I was thinking, Phoenix. I think SOME of us (eyeballs Dom, Ibi, and Dreamer sternly) might be getting just a tad bit too enthusiastic about how we welcome people...

  • Uhm, I was just going to tie him to a chair since he said he was leaving so he couldn't leave for an hour or two, then let him go. I have no idea what those guys are thinking.

  • But.. but... but he's a friendly dog and just wants to loved and hugged and cuddled and play ball with and rip your arms off. I mean snuggle close to you as you feed, I mean scratch behind his ears.

  • Was it dobermans or rotwillers that got there undeserved reputation of violence from a movie? I always forget which.

  • Depends. Dobermans have always been used as attack dogs as well as guard dogs.
My Grandfather in Germany had a doberman but had to put him down due to him becoming violent. There was something about the brain that was a problem.

Rottweilers got theirs from news media's as having an unruly disposition if I remember correctly.

  • Rotwillers then. They were known as a passive gentle breed of dog before the media took the reigns.

  • I don't put much weight on certain breeds' reputation for aggressiveness etc. It all depends on how you raise the dog.I have seen Dobermanns and Rottweillers -- and a giant-size German Shepherd, for that matter -- who couldn't be friendlier if you gave them white wings and a halo.

It's just that people who *want* aggressive dogs and raise them to be neurotic death-dealers have a preference for some breeds. 99% of the time, the problem is the owner, not the dog.

  • Agreed. I was not putting them down only how they were shown.

My grandparents in PA had a German Shepard that was chained up. It was a guard dog in that he was let loose at night to protect the farm. They warned us to stay away from him. I am an early waker and I went outside before the others. The dog ran up to me (I was 9). At first I thought he was going to attack only that he was inquisitive (large case of cousins down the road). My Grandmother was surprised as was my Grandfather in that the dog allowed me to pet him without being restrained.

They soon found the dog took a liking to me whereas none others could come near. I used to feed him, play and so forth. Smacked his nose when he tried to take a found snapping turtle. Don't know why and they couldn't answer.

    It just happens sometimes Ibi.

I had a 6 month old Lab pup look at me from across the yard, squirm out of the person holding him grasp and knock me flat on my back in order to lick me to death. ( you know the way labs frequently get ;) )
Some people just have something that attracts animals, in a good way.

  • Breeding for aggression actual has some science behind it as the dogs bred for aggression have been shown to have larger parts of the brain dedicated to well aggression. Like a dog bred for tracking will have a larger portion dedicated to sensory intake.

There is also form to be taken into account as a dogs physiology will determine how well it can bite/claw/charge/etc. Those are much easier to breed for because the physical features are easier to observe than the general intelligence/behaviours.

That being said, yes a lot of it is training and treatment and some dogs just naturally bond to some individuals.

  • It's the same for people, no matter the shape or the species.

There were MRI scans taken of performers brains, and they found that musicians had more neurons dedicated to sounds perception and motor control, dancers where the emphasis was on motor control and spatial awareness, and cab drivers where the spatial awareness and the language centre's were larger and more complex than the rest of the brain.

I don't know if they did any scans on writers though...

  • They put an engineer in the MRI, and when they came back they found that she'd completely taken it apart.

When they tried to put it back together, there were several missing pieces and several more that weren't supposed to be there.
