I wasn't sure if posting this would be a problem with the general anti-political-discussions stance of the moderators, but the writing on this piece is very sharp, and very funny.

Well it ain't about the govt where I live, but I listened to an ad for the state lottery and had to ask if any other organization could make such an ad, then a casino for the local NA tribe came on and I decided that maybe theirs was nearly as bad as the lottery...

The topic made me think of one reader's comment to an old, old story I wrote - "A benevolent government agency that's taking care of former soldiers it experimented on? Really? You want me to stretch my disbelief THAT far?"

We don't have an anti-political discussions problem. We have a problem that political discussions don't stay as discussions and inevitably it turns to insults and a flame war. There's a lot of truth behind the old saw that if you aren't a democratic/progressive when you're young, you're heartless or a sociopath. The young care about the world, they see the problems and they want to improve on it and leave their mark... and the route to that is through activism and involvement with socially oriented groups influencing the government. But the old? They want things simple, like when they were young. They realize that the changes they wanted to make when they were young weren't really anything new and may actually cause more problems than they would fix... also, as we get older, we see that there's a lot of corruption at the top and that trusting the government to make change for the better is like dentistry for sharks. You might want to help and even be able to... but if you stick your hand in there, there's no certainty that you're pulling back anything but a stump. So, the older we get, the less likely we want to give any authority to the government as part of fixing anything... and are less willing to need ... we got through childhood and we were ok, right? So why change it at all?
There are variations of course... a few of us older types still think 'liberal' and some young are raised conservative (or have a church telling them that being liberal is evil)
IF we could talk about things... actually focus on the issues and not the politics... focus on solutions and not ideologies from which the solutions spring... we wouldn't have to ban it. But even the short discussions have quickly turned to insults across party lines.. and that's not happening so far.
Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

It is maybe impossible to have political discussions without both sides accusing each other of being evil incarnate. Still fun to watch that film though!

I know that some conversations, and correspondence, have boiled down to:
"We are here from government, please don't destroy our equipment."
or, a favorite,
"We are here from the same government as you are, and IT'S STILL NOT A BOMB!"
