  • I just saw a game on facebook that I thought would be fun to play here.

The idea is pretty much exactly as stated - you must describe a story that you like using exactly six words. Then other people guess what story it is.

    For example:
"Boy gets bison, boobs, and angst" would be a description for the first Kayda story.

I'll get us started with a mix of Whateley and non-Whateley stories

Magical thieving crew steals metal empire.
Mercenary and were-lion kill things together.
Faerie and team fight horrible monstrosities
Harmless prank prompts wacky school-wide warfare
Children use wizardry to slow entropy
Rival school tries to steal bust
Girl's love, boxing, and engineered werewolves

Should we separate out the WU and non-WU stories? I didn't on the grounds that it would be easier to separate them later than to integrate them later, but I don't care either way.

Hey! I do MORE than just angst! Sometimes. Maybe. Once-in-a-while.

For Riddle of Sappho, would it be something like

"Girl gets laid, jailed, and acquitted"

Boy learns to fight alien bugs. Solved - Ender's Game

Well, I can't think of anything else right now.

  • OK, let me try...

    > Faerie and team fight horrible monstrosities
Could be a bunch of stories, really, but sounds like one of the Boston Brawls.

    > Harmless prank prompts wacky school-wide warfare
"Ayla and the Great Shoulder Angel Conspiracy"

Rival school tries to steal bust
    > =Yawn= Too easy. "Quoth the Ninja, Nevermore."

    > Man invents parallel earth travel box.
    "Sliders"?

    > Boy learns to fight alien bugs.
Fits both "Starship Troopers" and "Ender's Game", although "Ender's" fits marginally better.

OK, a few of my own:

Travelers fall into odd patchwork world. - Jack L. Chalker's Midnight on the Well of Souls, solved by ~Archangel~
Demoralized policemen fight mythical reptilian beast. - Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards; solved by Arcanist Lupus.
Their mission: destroy piece of jewelry - J.R.R.Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, solved by Valentine
Martian orphan comes home, becomes Messiah. - Robert A. Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, solved by Valentine

Yeah, I thought it might be that, 'cause it said "Wizardry", but I didn't know enough about its plot to be sure. Here's the TvTropes for the "So you want to be a Wizard" series. It's by Diane Duane.

No, HELL no, yes, no, no, no. Note that I'm being a bit liberal with the categories -- Not all of those are books. There might be Internet fiction (I mean, otherwise how could we include Whateley?) and comics (which are books, sort of.) But none are movies or TV series, at least not in their original form -- there might be adaptations, though.
Note that I'm amending one of them -- On reflecting, I figured out that "country" wasn't the appropriate noun; "region" is more like it.
Also, let me clarify that by "publishing politics" I mean "the politics of publishing" rather than "the publishing of politics."

  • I'm intriuged by the "Post-apocalyptic soldier confronts genocidal computer" - the genocidal computer element makes me think of HAL 9000 and GLaDOS, but neither protagonist is a soldier.

So here are a handful of submissions, most of which should be fairly easy (to compensate for the quantity?!)

    Starting off with the Whateleyverse:

Two girls rescue thralls, destroy base.
Girl grows venomous fangs, loses hair.
Character eaten, takes incredible journey, survives.
One character becomes two times two.
Character forgets to carry the one.
    Mage gender-flipped by cursed book.

    And a few not:

Attends poetry recital after home destroyed.
Lovers from rival families commit suicide.
Aristocrat meets witches, then kills rivals.
Bloke builds a big floating zoo.

No, I haven't read either of this pair and don't intend to!

We sparkle in sunlight, not fry!
This tale's not written in colour.

As for these, they're behind you! (Oh, no they're not! Oh, yes they are!)

Cursed: minor injury causes lengthy coma.
Bloke sells family cow, avoids Big Bad.
Rags to riches: sisters mutilate feet.

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

Yeah, this one IS a bit obscure... although I have mentioned it now and again. OK, hint: it's a manga, and it is available in English in an official translation.

So here are a handful of submissions, most of which should be fairly easy (to compensate for the quantity?!)

    Starting off with the Whateleyverse:

Two girls rescue thralls, destroy base.

The Christmas Crisis with Tennyo and Jinn/Cabbit

Girl grows venomous fangs, loses hair.

    Garafena

Character eaten, takes incredible journey, survives.

    Tenyo Goes to Hell

One character becomes two times two.

Could be either Jade or Merry.

Character forgets to carry the one.

I looked into the Abyss, and It Winked

    Mage gender-flipped by cursed book.

    The Braeburn Report

    And a few not:

Attends poetry recital after home destroyed.
Lovers from rival families commit suicide.

    Romeo and Juliet

Aristocrat meets witches, then kills rivals.

    Macbeth

Bloke builds a big floating zoo.

Noah's Ark -- Not really a book, but a passage in one.

No, I haven't read either of this pair and don't intend to!

Actually, I'd guess this is Christmas Elves, with Jade and Fey. They did more rescuing.

...Christmas that year was hard on bases, wasn't it?

One character becomes two times two.

Could be either Jade or Merry.

Probably Merry. Two bodies with two personalities each

Yeah, this one IS a bit obscure... although I have mentioned it now and again. OK, hint: it's a manga, and it is available in English in an official translation.

Ok it sounds like 'MD Geist', but it could be 'Grey' as well.

  • Sir Lee got most of them, with Arcanus Lupus providing one.

Two girls rescue thralls, destroy base - Christmas Elves
Girl grows venomous fangs, loses hair - Garafena
Character eaten, takes incredible journey, survives - Tennyo Goes To Hell
One character becomes two times two - Merry (originally one character, develops four personalities, later split into two bodies, each with two personalities)
Character forgets to carry the one - Abyss

Mage gender-flipped by cursed book - I was thinking of a fanfic for this one... "Naked mage converts air to stones" would also be apt...

Attends poetry recital after home destroyed - still pending solving, oh, and this takes place in the opening couple of chapters.

Lovers from rival families commit suicide - Romeo and Juliet
Aristocrat meets witches, then kills rivals - Macbeth (or The Scottish Play if you're superstitious)
Bloke builds a big floating zoo - any one of about a dozen flood myths, notably Noah. While the original's a few chapters in a book, there have undoubtedly been many plays written based on the tale...

We sparkle in sunlight, not fry! - Twilight
This tale's not written in colour - 50 Shades of Grey

Cursed: minor injury causes lengthy coma - Sleeping Beauty
Bloke sells family cow, avoids Big Bad - Jack and the Beanstalk
Rags to riches: sisters mutilate feet - Cinderella (some versions of the tale have the Uglies cutting off parts of their feet to try and fit in the shoe). An alternative (based on a sign you can actually buy): "New shoes can change your life!"

As the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, then only left-handers are in their right mind!

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

Heh. If I said "Soldier saves princesses using knitting skills," would that be clearer? (Yes, it should be princesses, not princess. There is more than one princess rescued.

Yup! I liked his tales - it's a shame he disappeared from the forums a couple of years ago :(

Meanwhile: Traumatised orphan and fixer make up = Reflections in an Evil Eye.

A wild guess (which, while it may not be the correct answer, may encourage others...)
Man invents parallel earth travel box = HG Wells' The Time Machine?

Country detaches itself, becomes floating island - this one intrigues me, as there are several floating islands in fiction, but no notable ones (well, notable enough to be worthy of mention in Wikipedia's "Floating islands (fiction)" category) that detached themselves from the mainland (rather than with the intervention of the residents).

Since most of my last lot have been solved, here's a new batch:

    A trio from Whateley:
Victory granted via staged crying fit
Rodents gang up to defeat bully
    Forcefields vulnerable to essence-enhanced waveform

    A quartet from outside:
    Four ghosts haunt businessman
    Ineffectual criminals reveal they're orphans.
Nautical social conventions overturned? Plot twist!
Japanese heir allegedly executed, then weds.

And a couple of manga (although the animes are probably more famous):
Teenagers fight evil in short skirts.
Two girls fight dark with light.

  • Uh, no. The reason I changed from "country" to "region" is that I had forgotten that it was in fact *two* countries that detached (together) from the continent.

And, as I mentioned, this is the wrong crowd for this book. So... none of the usual suspects: comics, manga, anime, pulps... I gave a big hint, look at the sort of books Ayla and Jadis would read.

Yes, while it could apply to many animes/mangas, Usagi / Moon started the trend (although technically Minako / V / Venus got there first) - something noticed by the animators, who lampshaded it with a villain (one of many who hung around far longer than in the manga): "Hey, have you ever thought it was embarrassing to jump around in such a short skirt?"

That sounds about right, although the godlike entity doesn't show up until the last couple books. The first couple books are about slightly more mundane (although still magical) threats.

not this one. I looked it up, and it's a different book. As near as I can tell, the coin in the Queen's Nose grants full wishes, not partial ones like the one I was thinking of.

    Bolo!

    -Why John Ringo? Why?

Seriously? At least give us some hint for such a prolific author.

-Mary Sue blows up many starships.

So, with a 'Mary Sue' I'm assuming femal protagonists, so "Hour of the Hoard' is out, with the Baen Books theme I'm going with the 'Honor Harrington' series

-Revengel spirit + super soldier kill pirates

Let me just check my bookshelf ... Path of the Fury, didn't we already have this one? :P

    Yes to all of this.
Ok, with #2, it's actually a pretty big clue. If no one can figure it out by tomorrow night I'll give another six words for the series. As a hint, it's Ringo's personal shame that became hugely popular and he's not sure why.

  • Yep. John Ringo himself had or supported a campaign to raise money for a charity where they sold shirts saying 'Why John Ringo, why?'
And he'd originally made the first story as a personal fetish story, never planning on letting people see it, until he let slip that he had it. Enough fans begged him to post it, that he released one chapter. His publishers and fans demanded the rest,

  • Let's clue up the two unsolved ones I set:

Attends poetry recital after home destroyed.
    * Clue: The poetry is officially very bad (according to the narrator).

Two girls fight dark with light.
    * Note: This one's based entirely on the Wiki article. The franchise appears to be even larger than that of the character named after the Rabbit in the Moon.
    * Clue: Currently there are 12 anime series (13th in production), 12 animated films based on the series, another 8 animated films, numerous musicals, 15 video games, 7 educational games and an arcade game.

Meanwhile, most of this lot shouldn't be much trouble to identify:

A bunch by the same author:
(Novel) Kidnapped author forced to resurrect character
(Novel) Author avatar goes on killing spree
(Novel) Telekinetic girl rager incident at school
(Novel) Zombie-ish virus spread by phone calls
(Novel) Caveat emptor adequately describes this shop
(Novelette) Patient prisoner's escape masked by poster

    Other stuff:
(Novel) Gentleman circumnavigates globe in record time | (Animation) Lion circumnavigates globe in record time
(Novel) Apprentice soldier joins experienced soldier trio | (Animation) Anthropomorphised dog joins experienced soldier trio

(Book / Animation) Defective toy given life and superpowers
(Brit Comic) Parodic superhero transforms by eating fruit
(Brit Comic) Schoolboy and his dog cause trouble
(Brit Comic) Strength boosted by eating bovine pastries

(Opera) Two couples endure trials, avoid suicide
(Ballet) Cursed princess's curse broken by suicide pact
(Instrumental) Russian army, outnumbered, defeats French forces
(Poem) Magic causes broom to multiply exponentially

More a series (and franchise) than a single book: Seventh employee mixes business and pleasure

Not very spoilery, but just in case... [ Click to expand ]

  • Phoenix is on the ball - but does anyone recognise the animated adaptations of the novels?

(Book / Animation) Defective toy given life and superpowers --> SuperTed (yes, Wales' homegrown superhero is a teddy bear, brought to life by a alien "spotty man" and given superpowers by "Mother Nature"...)

(Brit Comic) Parodic superhero transforms by eating fruit --> Bananaman ("Whenever Eric eats a banana, an amazing transformation occurs!") There's apparently a film version currently in development hell...

Yes, we do heroes differently over here...

(Instrumental) Russian army, outnumbered, defeats French forces --> 1812 Overture

(Ballet) Cursed princess's curse broken by suicide pact --> Swan Lake

I had to check the plot on Wiki to write this (only being familiar with a couple of excerpts from the orchestral suite), but essentially: Princess cursed to be a swan by night, can be broken by true love from someone who's never loved another, but the potential suitor is tricked by the evil mage distracting him with someone shapeshifted to look exactly like the princess's true form. They eventually break the curse by jumping into the pool and drowning, so they can be together in the afterlife.

(Poem) Magic causes broom to multiply exponentially --> Sorceror's Apprentice
(Novel) Apprentice soldier joins experienced soldier trio --> Three Musketeers

Spend a lot, Kingdom, Magic, yours!
Covenant with a Shadow, Royal Intrigue
Manipulative revenge, large companion teleport telepathy
Hide the sex, trained to fight
Human's unknowing, peoples underground / underwater fight

These two might need clues, I made them a little hard, they are both books from the same author as my sister's favourite book
Deceased Estate, Disturbed Treasure, Evil Elves!
Adolescent fight, boasting prophecies come true

    More Australian ones:
I will be an (unmarried) Author!
    Where did they go?
    Video game intrudes on reality
Angst, I don't mind my heritage

And a couple non-Whateley ones from a member of own canon cabal
Combined parental legacy, new school, sex
Gender isn't that important? For sorcery?

I promise I'll update the master list eventually. I'm feeling lazy at the moment, though.

    Dark is Rising is correct,

Horse and his boy is wrong. A new clue for that one (which is fairly obscure): God with single worshiper fights Fae.

Technically, "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" :P

@Malady - Yup, it is Pretty Cure. Haven't watched it myself, but when searching for animes (with accompanying manga versions to qualify for the title) other than Moon, I discovered the extensive franchise and assumed it would be relatively well known.

Well, you were using the very first season-thing, when it wasn't as widely known...

Hm... Might as well contribute another one. This should be easy? It's more recent than PreCure anyways.

  • Since everybody else seems to be doing it... a new pass for the ones I posted which are still unsolved:

    > Two war orphans shaking up Japan
A bit of clarification: the war where they were orphaned is the Cambodian Revolution under Pol Pot; the Japan they shake up is during the Nineties.

    > Unlucky boy engages alien demon princess
I REALLY can't believe nobody figured this one out yet. C'mon. It's EASY. OK, clarification: "engages" as in "becomes engaged to."

    > Country detaches itself, becomes floating island.
This is the hardest one. I'm going to give an enormous clue: the author got a Nobel for a different work. This cuts it down to what, about one hundred writers?

    > Character instructs author in publishing politics
You want more clues? I'll give more clues. The writer of this piece is one of the Whateley Canon. And the name or the character was reused in a different piece of fiction by the same writer.

    > Thief stars off-Broadway hit show
This one I ALSO cannot believe nobody figured out. It's a MAJOR fanfic, really well-known.

  • As this thread's winding down, here's the answers to my unsolved ones:

(Novel) Author avatar goes on killing spree - The Dark Half

(Novel) Gentleman circumnavigates globe in record time - Already solved as: Around the World in 80 days
(Animation) Lion circumnavigates globe in record time - Around the World with Willy Fogg

    # Hey now the story must go on 'cause a lot of time has gone, we must be ready to go away!
    # Eighty days around the world, we'll find a pot of gold, just sitting where the rainbow's ending
    # Time, we'll fight against the time, and we'll fly on the white wings of the wind
    # Eighty days around the world, no we won't say a word, before the ship is really back
    # Round, round, all around the world, round, all around the world, round, all around the world, round, all around the world.

(Novel) Apprentice soldier joins experienced soldier trio - Already solved as: The Three Musketeers
(Animation) Anthropomorphised dog joins experienced soldier trio - Dogtanian and The Three Muskehounds

    # One for all and all for one, Muskehounds are always ready
    # One for all and all for one, Helping everybody
    # One for all and all for one, It's a pretty story
    # Sharing everything with fun, that's the way to be!

Oh, we had a lot of earworms in UK Children's TV in the 1980s - including Mysterious Cities of Gold , Ulysses 31 (Greek mythology meets Sci-Fi), The Poddington Peas and, of course, Thomas and Friends .

(Comics) Schoolboy and his dog cause trouble - Dennis the Menace (The Beano)
(Comics) Strength boosted by eating bovine pastries - Desperate Dan (The Dandy)

(Opera) Two couples endure trials, avoid suicide - Magic Flute

(Novel series / films) Seventh employee mixes business and pleasure - "The name's Bond. James Bond. Double oh seven. License to kill." (And pick up a date en-route...)

There was an extra clue that it was an Australian book, so this was not the one I was thinking of.

Since we are providing solutions, I was thinking of "My Brilliant Career" by Miles Franklin

Arcanist Lupus wrote: And to add one new one:

James and the Giant Peach by Ronald Dahl?

OK, Solutions to mine (Apologies for the high number of Australian / UK books):
Girl's adventure in past helping family - Playing Beatie Bow, Ruth Park (Australian)
Covenant with a Shadow, Royal Intrigue - The Wizard's Shadow, Susan Dexter
Manipulative revenge, large companion teleport telepathy - Dragonflight, Anne McCaffrey (First Pern Book)
Human's unknowing, peoples underground / underwater fight - Power of Three, Dianna Wynn Jones
Deceased Estate, Disturbed Treasure, Evil Elves! - I think someone picked this already, but yes, Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Fiest
Adolescent fight, boasting prophecies come true - Another Raymond E. Fiest book, Magician
Where did they go? - Picnic at Hanging Rock (Australian)
Video game intrudes on reality - Space Demons, Gillian Rubinstein (Australian)
Angst, I don't mind my heritage - Looking for Alibrandi, Melina Marchetti (Australian)

Next two are both by Morpheus,
Combined parental legacy, new school, sex - Touching the Moon
Gender isn't that important? For sorcery? - The Academy

  • My unguessed ones were the following:

"Rope-weaver finds friend among serpents" - Venom's Taste by Lisa Smedman

"Dragons pressured into undeath amidst rage." The Rage by Richard Lee Byers

Both of which are novels set in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons, hence my clue.

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

Since when is a peach a vegetable? :D

I do find it amusing that I expected people to get this one wrong, but I didn't expect them to pick James and the Giant Peach.

I'll leave that one for now, but here are the solutions to my others:
Mercenary and were-lion kill things together. - Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews
Girl's love, boxing, and engineered werewolves - Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey
Girl and her god save city - Widdershins series by Ali Marmel
Children find coin, grants partial wishes - Half Magic by Edward Eager
Pregnant dragon gets addicted to chocolate - Hatching Magic by Ann Downer

I was thinking Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs but that one has a lot of food falling from the skies, so probably isn't right.

Edit: Cheated and looked up Fiction where vegetables fall from the sky. Got June 29, 1999 by David Wiesner . Never read it but the description has me wishing to now. Darn it! I already have ton of books [mostly ebooks] I own I haven't gotten around to reading yet.

Yeah, it's June 29th, 1999. It's a children's book, with more pictures than words, but I like it a lot. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was the red herring - it never ceases to amuse me that I know of two children's books about giant food falling from the sky.
