I'm really digging writing Jess, but her powers feel incomplete. I'm just not sure how to expand them.

I have a bit more written with her, but I need to polish it up and determine where she fits into one or two stories set in the same general area.

I guess Val's question is: "Does the carpet match the drapes?"

The bit about the mirror being silvered makes me think the materials matter, mainly the silver... Silver is usually feminine?

I'm kind of trying to stay away from Magic Mirror, though it is very tempting.

I was wondering if her powers was to swap gender, or maybe to dimensional hop using the mirror? i.e. what he was doing was swaping herself between the dimension where he was male into the dimension where he was female.

Could have a lot of fun with that sort of power set

As far as her power goes, the idea I have would be to see if they can transfer held objects with them as they port through the mirror. I don't know if the slight differences through the mirror are another entity or Jess's perception of their reflection (while they unconsciously do those gestures), but if slight differences are allowed and there are in fact 2 entities, could Jess pick up a baseball bat, touch a mirror to transfer, and have the bat only inside the mirror? Would the bat hit things as they swing their arms, on one side appearing to hold nothing while on the other they have a weapon? Could she hide things in hyperspace/mirror-space?

So... What happens if there's a big mirror and he switches while sitting on a motorcycle or car?

Considering she can't drive yet, the largest thing that might get switched is a pedal powered bike, and in that case I'll pull an answer out of my butt when it comes up.

And honestly I did the naked in the mirror while the other is dressed bit to avoid the "And Switch, now I'm wearing girl's clothing!" trope.

Astral shifting might work. Mirrors are supposed to be gateways to wonky things.

And I do get the feeling Jess would hang with the Outcasts if they let her, though I think f!Jess might go for Joe/his closet, and m!Jess for Sandra.

I think I have Jess's primary power set worked out!!! The boy/girl swap thing is just an odd/amusing side effect of her being a shape-shifting mimic. She takes on the reflection of another person to use their power. Kind of like... Duplex I think it is. Haven't quite decided on her limit or how she learns she can mimic powers yet.

How does taking the reflection of others translate to her switching gender with her own reflection?

And when she does take the reflection of someone else, does that mean that their reflection temporarily becomes Jess's?

I've thought about it some and I think I have an idea how to explain the gender swap and being a mimic; Her base power is internalized Probability warping that works like this; Jess was thinking about his twin sister when he touched the mirror when the Warping kicked in and swapped him to her. Why did it do that? It flipped the XY to XX of when he was conceived. To mimic another's powers it flips the switch of "If I manifested with X power...."

Woah. It tracks alternate timelines or something. Cool! ... Being able to copy any power is sort of OP. 'Cause it's basically Mimeo.

Unless, he has to go back to a baseform or trying to chain transforms does something different, depending on when the transform is applied.

Like, Boy -> Girl -> Energizer Mimic Attempt gets a different result than Boy -> Energizer Mimic Attempt or something.

Like I said, haven't worked out all the details yet, mostly cause I'm stuck on how she leans about the mimicking. Original version was have her touch the refection of Val's Cousin, and have something wonky happen like revealing she's not human. Which could still work if I had some clue as to how her not humanness manifests.

How about this.

Starting state : Boy & Boy reflection

Step 1: Touch a mirror in which someone (his sister) is reflected while thinking about said person. This causes at the same time Jess's current body form to be stored in the mirror and Jess's body to become a copy of that person (with power mimic) -> Sister form & Still Boy reflection

Step 2: Jess touches the mirror while thinking about themself. They swap body with the form stored in the mirror -> Boy & Sister reflection

Step 3: Jess touches a mirror in which Tennyo is reflected while thinking about Tennyo -> Tennyo body & Boy reflection (sister form lost until Jess manages to touch a reflection of their sister again)

Step 4: Jess copies Fubar before reverting to their boy form -> Fubar body & Tennyo reflection (Boy form lost for good this time)

Complete powerset: Shifter for power-mimic, and either esper if Jess's reflection is only visible to them (some kind of mental and personal reminder of the other form they can assume, without the reflection existing outside their mind), or warper if they uncounsciously manipulate light so that their true reflection is that of their other form on standby.

I've got a slightly different idea from GrimGrendel's version, mostly similar I think, below the break line.

• I think it avoids body image loss and still allows communication between Jesses (but avoids jesses unless one of them wants to be a hawk for a day)
• Allows either one to initiate swapping, or do they only think they're a they? Insanity ensues.
• Allows Tennyo to meet Jess playing girl-Fubar. Hilarity ensues.
• Allows Generator to meet boy-Tennyo. Nuclear annihilation ensues?

It might be safest for Jess to only mimic a fraction of the level of each given power set, within reason. (Aquerna: full power. Tennyo or Fey: dial things back from 'fried, extra crispy')

Getting a copy of the power set, including Powers That Suck, no swapping, might be less overpowered? Hard to say.

For more fun, the shape could be a "hard light" manifestation, with the risk of MATD if Jess stays as someone else too long. That opens a possibility of becoming more/less sexually dimorphic along the way. Would they want to be just one person for that long when they could be just about anyone?

Oops, Val's Cousin Is An Alien:

• "Would someone care to explain why I just laid an egg?"
• From a race of shapechangers that have to concentrate to approximate a human. Or, "Val, why didn't you tell me your cousin is normally, and I'm using that word carefully, a tentacular horror, and not just in bed?"
• A puppeteer parasite . "Um, Jess? I think we need to get you to a hospital. There's always an accident victim or two."
• "Yeah, I think we might need to find a mobile suit for you ... Hey Coz, got any spares back on the MotherShip?"
• Jess tries to duplicate the cousin's powers, to use on the cousin or Val, like a Faerie glamor. "Um, Jess? That only works on humans. But, it works on all of them, so you'd better figure out how to dial it down before we're all in trouble. No. Really. No. Friction is a Thing."
• For a longer-running story, horns, hooves: cute on a kid, not cute on a sonogram.

I got an idea to avoid body image loss. Maybe Jess can trigger the mirror switch with only a picture of someone they previously shapeshifted as. This way, with a picture of Jess and Jess's sister, they can easily switch back to base form whenever they want. The caveat here is that picture-switches would not grant any powers. The mirror needs to reflect the mutant themself to copy those.

And I agree that there should be a limiting factor as to how strong her copied powers are compared to the original. Like putting that at a lv3 cap. Copy Fey? Jess becomes a mage-3. Copy Tennyo? regen-3 and warper-3. Copy Aquerna? Full power, as null0trooper said. (Although it might get weird if only the avatar power is copied, but not the spirit itself. And it wouldn't make Jess competent with whatever ability she gets. She'd still need to train and learn magic, devise workshops and so on)

And also seeing maybe not a full replication of the person, but more how their powers would be expressed by Jess. Merph, I need to work up a way to get her to school while Kiju is still there, or work up another Ki-girl to attend with Jess.

And then the form that the fire takes might govern what element Jess gets, or something that's disconnected, and unexpected, like hair color or something??

“losing” forms; I'm not seeing it happening. Jess will always have her base two forms. Might throw that in as a fear while learning the ins and outs though.

Fey may be fine power wise, not like Jess would get an echo of Aung to whisper Eco-disaster spells to her. Tennyo copying... yeah... no. Billie is just a whole order of power I don't wanna try writing.

Val's cousin looks like this NSFW!!!! under a Venom like skin suit.

Kidding. Val's cousin is really a decedent of Sidhe that were off Earth when the Sundering cut off their outpost. Not sure if they still have magic, are more or less humans with long life spans and pointed ears, or what. She does have a skinsuit though, which is what I had considered Jess duping and ending up 'snuggling' Val in a semi liquid form. Val's also a mutant, but hasn't manifested yet.

I'm rethinking the shifting aspect. Thinking less full on copy and more just picks up traits some how. Dupe a Fey, get elf ears, a more red tinted hair color, and an added cup size for f!Jess form rather then full Fey. And cause you lot think it Should Be Done; Dupeing Fubes results in this .

If Jess dupes an avatar when the avatar power fades the spirit would either get kicked out, or end up stuck like Sparky and Scott. Actually I'm tempted to get Val get mojoed or something with the same results as Scott and Sparky, just with a different spirit.

Hmm hadn't considered Cait copying, but I feel she's in Tennyo's category and not gonna get played with.

Short update added. Finished off the scene with Val.

And this fits with canon, given our new knowledge of how mutant twins work with Small Mercies!

What other of my stories/micro scenes have people been asking me about if I'm gonna do more with, besides Icy?

Is there a micro somewhere covering that mind-altered cousin? It comes across as if there was a story implied there. A freaky and cruel story.

I am still writing that bit. And it is freaky and cruel. Not quite Domo cruel, but still cruel.

Found this picture the other day, and I can see this as f!Jess in a few years. Just maybe add some Sidhe points to her ears.

I figured out Jess's powers!!! Esper in the form of scrying, Wiz trait mostly used to power the whole shebang though in time she'll be ab;e to do some spell work, And a slight variant on Channeler which like Jamie allows her to channel a spirit's power without bonding with it. The mirror focus works on the 'a mirror holds a bit of the Soul of those looking in it' myth. Touching the reflected image allows the spirit to enter Jess's body.

The reason Jess can swap forms; she was scrying her sister in the shower with out knowing it. When jess wiped off the mirror she snagged a fragment of Ashr's spirit which super glued itself to Jess's. And a little bit of Jess's stuck to Ash's. Haven't figured out how to have it happen yet, but Ash can also flip her gender now as well.

Might also later on let Jess learn to use mirrors as portals like Molly's portals. Might involve a Bloody Mary dare when she get's to Poe...

or a "hey summon the sex demon..."

I was gonna be real mean to Jess and have her copy Tammy, then decided that was just a little to much, especially considering I think Tammy had help ending up looking like she does and if she hadn't been helped she'd have died due to her GSD.

I think Jess is gonna need to be around Ash to rigger the male reflection.

And yes, that is some serious GSD. I had thought to be nice, but Tammy popped into my head whole cloth. Worst part is power wise she's an Underdog as an Ex 2.

I've gotten a little side tracked working up a a Drow wiki page as well as working out a few side character's issues/stories, but more will be coming soon.

Just a few comments;

Next post I'm gonna be juggling a few scenes to make the time flow feel smoother. I realized instead of writing two stories that cover the same scene, I may as well split off the other one after Reflections. Next bit should be posted Monday-ish.

Timeline wise, I'm sliding things to Gen2, Year 2 (2017-ish), with some parts starting a year or more before Gen2.

Did some scene shuffling and added a Val at home scene be with a few hints of things to come. the new stuff is mostly in the first half of this post.

Nah, no tail needed. This was something I saw for real. A young lady had this dress with Celtic knot like designs done in white in rows over a print,so they stood out, and two where right smack on her lower cheeks.

Hmm, I need to remember to ask who's in charge of the Whateley chapel/Goobers in Gen 2...

New section up. I did put a place holder in as I want to get to certain point in one of my other stories before I do the reveal.

Regarding Ash; I think from Jess's bit of soul she picked up the Medium esper ability. He can house spirits, she just sees them.

Gosh darn it to heck. Minor edit to the last update. I realized Val has no clue that Andy is anything but a Sicko's play thing so why would she think she'd attend Whateley? -face palm- This is what happens when you get into the flow and let the characters speak for themselves. As they are an extension of my Muse, they know more about what is to come then they should.

Reworking that last Ash/Tammy entry, had an brain storm last night. Hoping to repost Monday or Tuesday.

No, just her body/soul reacting to getting a piece of Jess's stuck to it. Jess's body/soul is built to handle spirits, Ash's not so much.

Doing a bit of pre-writing plotting and I'm a bit torn regarding Jess's future. Do I keep the gender flipping, even though she's telling me that 99.98% of the time she's at Whateley she will be female, or do I slowly let her male side fade away/become female in a form of MATD?

It could be an interesting way to drive forward, if, as the character decides that no, they prefer being female, they also have to deal with life situations in which an outsider might think that it would have been simpler/easier to switch to male. Which in turn reinforces their decision to be female when the outcome turns out notably good if not better than it would have been to give in and go with their original "default".

Jess's reveal was inspired by the "Naked man!" episode of How I Met Your Mother. "What pose did you choose, Lilly?" "The 'I got boobs'." "Ahh, Good choice."

Is Jess going to wind up with Andy or Val? And how will Ash react to her new sister? Argh! So many questions! Keep up the good work, enjoying the flow of the story so far.

Honestly I have no idea who any of the girls are going to hook up with. At first I was thinking Val and Jess, but now... well Andy has a surprise yet to reveal which might tip Jess in her favor. That is if Andy likes the ladies, which she hasn't told me yet.

Ash, I think, is gonna grumble about Jess being prettier then she is, then laugh her ass off the first time Jess has a period.

On a bit of a role with this story, though I am surprised how few variant Ladybug costumes there are on the net. Next post should be Wednesday.

New update. Gonna try and pull this story out of my Muse's grip to work on Changeling's Tale. For that one I may divide it into Part 1 and Part 2 so I can get it to a point where some of the stuff coming up in Reflections won't be Spoilers. Not that I don't think people haven't put two and two together already.

Got a question; Do people want to see the kids before school power tests or just the at school ones?

Either's good. Having power tests before school could set up things that wouldn't happen if only tested at school.

Oh, she's been a pest tormenting me when I had trouble getting my ideas down due to eye/hand/roommate issues

Crud. I was hoping to not stick Jessie into Poe, but realized as I was writing today, Ashly's at least told her roommate her twin is a boy, and if Jessie shows up as a girl... though that does let me sick a poed sdhe on a teacher leading to Dair meeting Nikki that much sooner.

Reason for the new thread is partially to avoid confusion on my changing Andi to Adria. There where other changes as well.

Feels like there will be one to two more installments for this story; basically up to the point they leave for the school. Then new story!

FINALLY finished Reflections. Gonna try focusing on Adria's origens next while I catch up on my Gen 2 reading. I've been bouncing from the emding to revising into a WhatIf draft as ideas refined.

Quick question: Would it be better to switch the Hell-Bunny movie for the Miraculous Ladybug viewing and have Val's first time manifesting her shell be in the form of She-Devil?
