  • So here's the complete first arc of For Master.
It's been tidied up and the ending is still dark but not quite as bad as it had been.

  • I haven't looked (and I don't want them to lose Unread status) but why is there a Nov 4 "For Master (Complete)" as well as today's (Nov 9) "For Master Complete"?

  • Because I am a moron. I didn't see it and thought I hadn't posted it.
I'll ask a moderator to get rid of one of them.

  • I still very much enjoy this story. Glitch's complete lack of understanding due to his sheltered beginnings, his attempts to figure out ethics in a world of conflicting information, the fact that he's basically at risk of being wiped out if anyone figures out what he really is... it all works very well for me.

  • He's a true outsider. I really like him for the same reason.
And I'm happier with this version where he doesn't have lots of sex with Becky, and Rachael explained to him about the concept of cheating and other things, which he eventually understood. Makes him more sympathetic.

  • Painful to read, but well-written. I find this story to be an interesting commentary on sexuality in society, and what might happen if some of people's "fantasies" actually did become reality.

Still, there is the question of how the A.I. became so anthropomorphic. What part of a human personality was embedded therein? If there wasn't, how did the A.I. have feelings? If there was, how did it understand so little about humanity?

    Thanks.
She started off with basic emotions for the role play she'd be doing. Let's just say her creator wanted her to display a WIDE variety of emotions and sensations, not all of them pleasant. That's why she can go from happy to sad to terrified in 6 seconds flat. Very basic, intense emotions is what she's programmed for.
The real world knowledge and less intense emotions came after she was 'freed'. She took the basics she knew from porn movies and scenarios and expanded on it by reading everything she could. Then she used Sam's memories to learn more about the intricate details. That's why there are some huge disconnects and dissonance. Movies already show a distortion of reality, porn shows an even bigger distortion. She's not sure what's real and what's a distortion.
Basically her creator planned on making a virtual AI who could fake thinking and emotions, And got a true AI instead. It simply didn't show because whenever she was active she was lost in the moment totally devoted to pleasing him. Once he disappeared the sentience had to start acting on its own with a distorted idea of self and reality.

Thus we touch upon the reason why I don't read this story, despite loving Domoviye's work, when I read something I often start to think like the main character, and I don't want to think like her.

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

  • The mouse-over picture thing for the disclaimer isn't working for this story, but is for all the other newest WhatIFs...

Ah, I see. So she began with faked emotions (that triggered faked responses), and when she entered a real human body she mapped these onto real emotional reactions with no clue as to the consequences, and these ended up dragged her around by the nose, so to speak. A very interesting idea. Also, the fact that she is a "devised" A.I. would mean there are parts of her make-up that cannot be logically explained, but are just a "local" distortion of reality from her devisor creator.

    Well done.

  • She had real emotions to begin with but they were supposed to be fake. Everything else is correct.
And the devise creation process did two things, first it made her program small enough that it didn't need massive servers to support the codes. Second it gives her fine control of anything she enters. She can't make it do the impossible, no turning skin to stone or wood, or making another AI without years of work, but she can make them dance to her tune.

  • No. It would be like a gadgeteer trying to remake a devise. Even her repairs are dangerous kludges which is why she compares them to scribbling over a masterpiece.
