A Whateley Universe Story.
By Rosalie Redd.
Wut? If that's your real name, I'm... Disbelieving? It's so on-the-nose, especially combined with "Rosalie"... Then again, the last name Blacklock exists, etc.

Huh. Still not sure it's not a penname, but whatever?
Part one.
Heinrich Groenstadt was a brilliant man, but at this moment his brilliance was being brought down by pure chance.
Multi-part, OK.
Who's this guy?
[Nazi anti-mutant dude]
Ok... ... Oh! Makes sense! If you pride yourself on Purity, well, Mutations are basically not that.
Worse yet, the party had not considered that for all the mages and mutants and artificially enhanced humans that they could produce, the allies could produce far more.
And the Allies' processes were kinder, and less wasteful? Even if not by a lot, so even if they had no size advantage, their better motivated troops would win the day?
With his followers, he built a secret laboratory.
He had followers? OK.
Over the decades he became as much machine as man. He had to survive to see his works to fruition.
Hmm... Did his followers cyborgify too? And was he recruiting? Well, the story isn't really about him, so *shrugs*
And I guess he's become the thing he hated... A user of meta-tech and stuff. I wonder if the other Nazi sects would instigate an internecine conflict...
The resulting quakes shook his compound deep in the Andes. A literal lifetime of work was ruined, and if he did not flee, the subjects would find him and kill him.
Oooh! Mountain Eire! OK! ... Also, I'm wondering if Mountain Eire will even do the "Find and kill" thing, but the other survivors might.
*Checks "Eire"* ... Her non-codename is Essylt. OK!
His information network grew vast, infiltrating governments, and political agencies world wide. When he learned of the founding of a school for the freaks, he got in on the ground floor infiltrating it. As the school grew, his spies and hidden technologies remained in place.
So, he's got resources everywhere! I wonder who his spies are... Do they even know that they're working for him?
Gaining knowledge from his plants, he decided on a new idea. The capture and containment of the freaks for study. With his technologies stealing data safely from the devisors and gadgeteers of Whateley, he put a plan in motion.
Wait... He can make / use Devisor tech?? I guess he uses captured DEVs to make them...
Kidnapping kids / mutants... Hmm... I guess he took them from the MCO and others or something.
Using his spy technology, he even created a virtual Whateley. So advanced was this data miner, even the cyberpaths that routinely dove into the cyberverse were unaware of it.
WOW. He's that good at tech? Or just good at not drawing attention to himself? Which is a powerful skill too!
"Virtual Whateley", so a VR sim of Whateley?? Huh... Interesting...
He had over a thousand test subjects sealed in suspended animation, all dreaming virtual dreams.
Over a thousand? That's more people / students than even exist at Whateley... Interesting...
[Quake...] [...] The captives were awake and confused. Guards had begun shooting the escaped mutants. Of course the mutants fought back.
Well, that's a lot of biological material a Regen could use to fuel their survival or something...
The Doctor made it to the hangar, several of the large helicopters had been destroyed by debris, but he managed to get to one that was intact. Setting the self-destruct codes from a terminal in the hangar, they taxied out of the hidden doors, and into the sunlight. Taking off, the Doctor watched as explosions racked the camouflaged facility. All his work, a lifetime of study and experimentation was lost.
So, "they taxied out"... Meaning that Heinrich escaped with some of that "handful of other scientists" that tried to escape. I wonder where they're going... I guess hopping to somewhere with an airport, then to a backup base or something, to try and work with what he still remembers.
Also likely some of his followers were too slow and got caught in the blast.
Three weeks later! Woah!
Over the past few weeks she had only managed to stay alive by eating snow and catching small animals to eat.
Ok, she can't eat meat that well, so I guess she needed to eat often, and likely being in a tube means she wasn't even in good condition to live the usual month before death by starvation.
And found no other survivors?
[The rest of the story]
Metal Burns, and Clothing Allergies, and the physical description confirms! This is likely Fey, or Eire! Likely Eire, given that it's you who's writing!
Hmm. Got no shoes... A clear mutant if she ever takes the hat off, no use of magic... Interesting.
Not even sure she knows how to speak, but VR environment likely gives her a lot of info... So I assume she can. I wonder if any of the info is how to contact Whateley for help...
----
The story is "The Survivors" plural, so I wonder who else made it out...
If Heinrich cloned some of the more durable mutants, like Slab or Jimmy T or something, then I'd assume them...
----
different technologies > deviant technologies [? "Different technologies" doesn't sound specific enough.]
into to > into
Decades earlier Heinrich > Decades earlier, Heinrich
it’s downfall > its downfall
In the mountains he could work > In the mountains, he could work
as he air circulators > as the air circulators
world wide > worldwide
has he put them > as he put them
...
Using their own inventions against them was somehow fitting to him. Bringing them down with their own inventions.
Sounds repetitive...
and alarms blared warnings, and emergency lights flashed.
Too many 'ands', dear.

Obviously yes, that is Eire... but whether she was ever Essylt is another matter.
If you are a Nazi scientist who wants to study Mutants, and you were in WWII... you would be creeping up on 100 years old, or older.
The less... repulsive option to surviving to ensure you spark off a new Reich is to use technology to extend your lifespan.
It's not known where or how he obtained the mutants and other 'deviants' he studied, but it is assured that they weren't clones.
The problem with cloning is that you have to factor in mitochondrial drift, errors in the genetic coding, etc. your best research subjects would be the real deal.
As for the VR testing, not all of them were run through the Whateley simulation, and those that were... weren't all run through the same timeline. . Some were run through other artificial backstories, and even lives... like maybe... being a young avatar that attended Whateley at an incorrect time? (heh heh heh)

the quake might need something added into it to make logical sense?
Like a large land shift that crossed the bunker or sudden upheaval or subsidence
Because growing up in California, middle of quake country and in the city that you see on the news all the time about when a quake hits...Pasadena and Caltech.
I know for a fact that during a quake, the safest place is underground...as strange as that sounds!
