Went to the dentist today... So, what do we know about Dentistry at Whateley Academy? We haven't seen anyone go to the dentist, have we?

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

Actually we do know there is a dental facility in Doyle, as more than one G1 character is mentioned as having tooth work done as a result of fighting.

While not shown, Chaka ended up visiting the Dentist after her fight with Counterpoint.

Many people hear voices when no-one is there.
Some are called 'mad' and shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day.
Others are called 'writers' and they do pretty much the same thing.

Now I'm trying to imagine Razorback going to dentist for a checkup and how much nitro the dentist would need...

Nitrous oxide or nitroglycerin?
More to the point, I know it's hopelessly mundane and boring but I think the only mention to someone having a haircut was in "No Beast So Fierce." With 600+ student plus teachers, staff etc. I wouldn't be surprised if there is at least a barbershop and a small salon in-campus.
I mean, students have limited opportunities to go to town, usually only on weekends; consider one haircut/salon visit a month on average; a campus barber could have about ten customers every day. Maybe not enough to be at Whateley fulltime, but perhaps part-time -- say, mornings and weekends he stays at his regular salon in Dunwich, weekday afternoons he is open for service in the school. And most boys would prefer to take care of it in between classes than waste some precious weekend hours.
Women's salons are more complicated, and involve more workers and more equipment. Still, maybe Mrs. Cordell (the Dunwich hairdresser from "NBSF") has a small operation in-campus to handle the more basic tasks during the weekdays, and students go to her main salon for full service...
I keep wondering where Ayla cuts his hair... knowing how fussy he is, he wouldn't accept any small-town barber (he notices people in "cheap haircuts", so he wouldn't want one for himself)

As for haircut/styling maybe Mrs. Cordell has a few days a week that she works evenings at Whateley if there is enough clients. The models at Venus Inc would be worth a fair chunk of change by themselves and always need work done.

You couldn't sustain a high profile salon on that... but that's why you rarely see a salon that has just one stylist. But a suburbs salon in a small strip mall? Wouldn't be unreasonable. The lease for a stylist at one of the franchise salons is around $1000/mo, though the initial buy in for the equipment can be significant (20k). 200-300 customers per month at an average cost of $20 each is 4-6 thousand a month. If the school provided a space and equipped it inexpensively (using fabricators to create chairs, sinks, and so forth), that'd be a VERY appealing set up.
And the stylist would either HAVE to be a paranormal or have custom made tools to use for some cuts.

Is actually a pretty full schedule for a stylist. And even a military barber with limited choice of end results is unlikely to schedule more than 3 cuts per hour.Sir Lee wrote: ten customers every day.

Seems to me there were more than that. Maybe not even as onstage as Phoebe's was, but I know Ayla mentions getting his hair cut several times. There are more mentions of how some of the girls are going to style their hair.

With Mrs. Cordell in Dunwich for the really hard cases, and the girls that want to go all out with styles (or want to treat themselves), maybe just an ordinary 'Barber' on-campus to handle the cheep-and-quick cuts for the students?
Obviously we wouldn't expect Ayla to go there, but girls like Jade and Anna, along with most of the boys who are just "getting a bit cut off the end" would all be fine with it.
Also I wouldn't at all be surprised if there is something "better" in Melville, either as a shop or as a 'come to you' service, possibly even the option of booking Mrs. Cordell to come between certain hours on certain days.

Why pay multiple dollars per cut to a barber when you could instead put a couple quarters in the BarberBot and have your hair cut with lasers?

Perhaps because you want to be sure you still have hair... and eyebrows... and ears... and a nose... and in fact, a head afterwards?Kettlekorn wrote: Why pay multiple dollars per cut to a barber when you could instead put a couple quarters in the BarberBot and have your hair cut with lasers?
