  • What happens when a young mutant without literally anything but the clothes they are wearing reaches the front gates of Whateley Academy? No matter if by warped probability, magic, some powerful spirit interfering, a strong esper sixth sense or just being rescued by a student or even faculty from one the many dangers for mutants in this world. I can barely someone like Mrs. Carson telling them to go away and either find money or die horribly.

My head canon solution so far ws some kind of tribunal of potential sponsors sitting in on power testing and interviewing said young mutants. Just a bunch of spectators from the most goody-two-shoes hero on the very left to some sick sadistic Joker wannabe on the very right looking for a chance to return something, an apprentice, a partner in crime with convenient powers, a pupil to pass their important life experience onto, a relief from boredom, a chance to make something right, to give someone the chance they were refused or whatever they might hope to find.

In the center could be an MCO representitive recruiting young mutants for the civil war inside the MCO hinted at by (at least) Morpheus. I also could imagine Absinthe taking that very place in Gen2.

Is there anything similar in existing stories so far which I am just not aware of? And if not would this idea be realistic? Or do I have a major flaw in my logic here?

  • I would assume that they would hold some sort of special admissions hearing, headed by The Board of Supervisors and Mrs.Carson. Possibly find a sponsor, and give them a chance to find a scholarship.

That's thinking logically and bureaucratically though. With Whateley logic stops at the door, and papers multiply like tribbles.

  • Well some times, like with shine, people offer to pay for more then one student without specifying who

  • I'd expect that many or most of the school's usual repeat sponsors have communicated what they are looking for in a student to sponsor, be it career goals (US DoD, Syndicate), background (Ms. Guzman), skills/powers (CIA, NEXT), or circumstances (ARC, Vatican).

Mind, it may not always be a Good Thing to find yourself on ARC's radar (Carmilla, Circuit Breaker, Joshette/Josie), but those who do rarely have much say in the matter.

  • I expect that the school holds a few scholarships in reserve for these sorts of situations. At the very least, they might take the new mutant as a guest for a couple weeks while figuring out what to do.

I'd think that allowing ANYONE other than the testing personnel (those administering the tests and their assistants) to watch power testing would violate the confidentiality that the school strives to provide during that process.

  • That seems logical. If nothing else, I would think some sort of interim scholarship until they can find a sponsor. Considering the evidently common reaction of tossing mutant kids out they would almost certainly have some sort of fail-safe system in place.

  • They would absolutely have to have a system in place. If the students ever learned that they had summarily turned away someone who showed up at the gates there would be a general riot, in the fashion only super powered teens could manage. The Eastern seaboard would be lucky to survive!

  • It would depend somewhat on the nature of the mutant in question. If they don't really need the specialized education/environment Whateley provides, aren't being hunted, and aren't otherwise interesting in some way, odds are they'd try to hook them up with a mutant-friendly part of the foster care system. If anybody would have the contacts to know about such places, it would be Whateley. They'd also probably continue monitoring the child in question, at a distance, in case their situation changes. Sometimes the interesting powers or an unnatural proclivity for protagonism show up a bit late...

  • While Jade didn't quite do that, it was a month or less for her to apply, be accepted, get Kansas to approve and get her full scholarship. Chou was in a similar situation without the scholarship.

The problem with a mutant just showing up, is that someone had to have told them about the school, and that person likely would tell Whateley that the kid was on the way.

  • In fact, if Whateley doesn't know they're on the way, odds are it's muggle repulsion field would kick in and give them a lot of difficulty in finding the place.

  • Muggle repulsion field?

    It’s in the sticks!

How often do you think out of the way preparatory boarding schools have little orphan Annie turn up knocking on their gates?

I believe Kettlekorn means the winding back roads, creepy statues, and heavily armed guards that stop everyone but a very...very, angry Mahren.

  • I don't remember which story it was mentioned in, but I'm pretty sure it was said that Whateley has wards set up that make it difficult to find (especially by accident, e.g. by people hiking in the mountains or just out for a drive), and that they suspend these wards or add exceptions when they expect visitors. If I remember right, it was something like a "No, I don't want to go this way; that way would be more interesting" suggestion field. A sufficiently focused person fixated on Whateley (e.g. Momma Mahren) would probably be less susceptible to its effects than somebody just hiking through the area oblivious to Whateley. But it's been a while, so I might be mistaken.
