  • Gen1:

Goodkinds are the only ones who test their whole family for MGC?

    ----

    Gen2:

Genomics companies don't spring up like IRL, 'cause MGC and stuff?

  • MGC is only indicative of a higher likelihood of gaining powers. Most MGC carriers go from birth to death without it ever expressing, so most people don't consider it worth the paranoia.

But rather like any unexpected development in life... "How can this happen to MEEEEE?"

  • It's mentioned in the Fling story "Like a brick" that the Gen1 cutting edge DNA testing can ID an Exemplar (and is used in the Olympics) but that no non-magic, non-devise test exists that can ID a mutant in general.

In Gen2 we see in "Summer of my German Heritage" that DNA tests for mutants exist and are portable enough for MCO agents to deploy in the field, but we have no further details beyond the binary "is/isn't a mutant". While in "Ping_Out" the existence of the "NMT-3000 certification" suggests this kind of test is generally accessible, for the right price.

Said detectors have popped up in Gen 1 so they have been further expanded beyond being devises used by The Triangles...

And unless I am mistaken, they only work on active genes so if someone hasn't manifested and activated their genes they can't really be detected by the equipment yet.

  • The super rich like the Walcutts and others probably do it as part of the typical genetic screening to weed-out issues in their kids...can't have a kid with deformities or down syndrome in their offspring, can they? Not when appearances matter.

As i understand it, (i could be wrong) but anything that can detect a mutant at a distance is still probably devise, magic or psi.

After all, it would probably take a high level gadgeteer to make it into normal tech, and most of them have a fairly good incentive to NOT do such a thing.

Any Bad Ideas I have and microscene OC character stories are freely adoptable.

You are right, I had to double-check and it was a devise built by Munchkin that detected them from Vermont and directed them towards Berlin. It wasn't strong enough to pinpoint them as mutants until they were about a block or so away, but it detected mutants from a great distance overall.

  • I assumed the rapid jump in technology at scanning and identifying mutants in Gen 2 was a result of that unspeakable event named after an entire town/city. The name escapes me at the moment.
