Does the Avatar trait somehow reduce the possibility of creating hobgoblins? We have only seen this combo with Kayda, and as far as I remember she had few, mentioned, hob related accidents.

No. Kayda is somewhat of a unique case in that she is fed a small amount of Essence by a very unique spirit. The amount is small, amounting 'usually' to a very low ranked Wiz (who also tend not to run into hobgoblin trouble unless they really aren't doing anything with their accumulating Essence for some time) but with an extra push IF she needs it. And because Wakan Tanka is doing that (and controlling it) there really isn't a chance for hobgobs... because if Kayda isn't in need of Essence, she won't be getting more pushed to her.
Most any other avatar isn't going to have a spirit playing 'regulator valve' on their Essence intake so they are just as likely as any other Wiz of their rank to produce hobgobs.

Thanks Kristian, that helps, now I have a release valve for the seven years of bad luck my character has coming her was after breaking a magic mirror.

Remember, mages get hobgoblins from a Well that is full beyond their mental discipline's ability to contain it but its not the only thing that can happen. Mages are also susceptible to 'least wishes'... which amounts to localized wish fulfillment as randomly spilled out Essence tries to take shape around ANY intent. Just remember its very small amounts of Essence spilling over at any given time, so they are 'least' wishes... very tiny amounts of fulfillment, or larger intents incompletely fulfilled.

As a side point, I have speculated that some of what are being called hobgoblins aren't quite what they seem. Aside from Absinthe's fairies, we've seen that Fey's hobgoblins, while not really controllable, are at least somewhat favorable to her (when she is in a fight, they tend to go after whomever she's facing off with).
My suggestion - which I included in a micro I wrote about some of the other Sidhe on campus - is that in some cases, they are a slightly different phenomenon which I named 'haugboon' (after one of the traditional names for Brownies). These are less 'magical spillage' and more 'manifested temporary familiars', but because one needs to learn how to communicate with them they can behave much like hobgoblins at first.

In Fox Tails (pt 3), Catherine ends up with will-o-wisp looking hobgoblins from an overfull well accidentally burning a kitchen, and she also has both Avatar and Wiz traits
"Uh-oh." "Don't tell me - we're about to go over a huge waterfall." "Yup." "Sharp rocks at the bottom?" "Most likely." "Bring it on."

Kayda has a wiz rating for attracting essence on her own - but not at a high rate. She also has a 'trickle charge' from Wakan Tanka. Not a huge burst of essence. It is possible she could have hobgoblins. Remember, she was getting tutoring on controlling her well in her first term at Whateley.

Kayda uses her magick pretty consistently, so the main thing preventing her from hobgoblins is that she is rarely running around with a full enough tank to spill over.

If Kayda made fifty or sixty of her special tea, then consumed them quite rapidly, the cumulative boost to her essence would undoubtedly overwhelmed her control and result in a lot of hobgoblins - possibly shaped like miniature bisons or snake-demons. Or even Lakota horsemen with bows.
It would be bad.
It would be bad.

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

How about tiny technicolour sparkly winged bison?

Sixty cups of tea? Yeah, it would be bad. Like "get out of my way, I need to go to the bathroom NOW" bad.
