As more of the related content comes along I do expect the discussion to shift towards narrower and more specific topics, but right now we have enough to talk about as a whole for a strong discussion but not enough to say talk about individual characters for very long.
As for the characters whom are hinted as new students, I'm gonna be listing them with all the base info I can.
Danny Franks
powers: Avatar (female) cougar spirit
Associations: Kayda (Pejuta) Franks -older sister formerly brother
expected cottage: Poe
Ribbon
powers Ex 7 Reg 4 Manifestor 3C
formerly almost 50 year old Al Morgan, is the father of Lady Havok and Shortcut,
body appears to be that of a 10 year old girl,
Strong Galahad Syndrome, current long term goal- find cure or treatment for Diedrick so fewer devisors end up like his daughter.
expected cottage: Poe
Knockoff
powers Reg 3 Pk 2 Ex 3
looks like Setup
expected cottage: despite being Trans, NOT Poe
David Goodkind
powers: unknown target of Nimbus
yes "one of THE Goodkinds"
currently Ayla's brother, unknown how manifesting will treat him, though if he ends up as an energizer and or high level regen, Ayla will probably have to cover the food bill to sustain him.
Whisper
powers: loads of them, high level Wiz specialized in illusions, Cyberpath, and energizer primarily, also exemplar and Sidhe
in here because IRL timing of when Whisper was made Canon puts doubts on her being class of 2010
Three little witches, we know them already
Bronze (in old canon bible)
undoubtedly some were missed

Are we sure of her Regen as being separate from her EX, instead of the normal EX-Regen?
... Oh, so Bronze is the Zenith-Clone... Thought it was someone else...

Also, Envy, Silver Ghost and Ethan (from Dancing in the Shadows)might be coming to Whateley this year.
Also, isn't Whisper already in Whateley?

Silver Ghost is a serious maybe not just because as of latest story she still has separation issues, but because of the perspective of the Whateley universe she brings is important. I wouldn't count on it unless she meets a current student (perhaps someone from Poe, who's change was similar) so that she'd already have a friend at school.

You're assuming that she survives until Combat Finals...

I'm not so sure that David will be significant, if only because he's Diane's character, and I don't think she's around to provide direction for him. And it's fairly easy to put him on a bus, considering that he hasn't even been forced to manifest yet, and he's a pretty minor character at the moment.

David may be a fairly minor character, but Nimbus isn't, so I would expect partial bus, besides that wouldn't stop him from being a significant background character for a while.Arcanist Lupus wrote:

If there's anywhere Roulette would have the greatest chance of survival, it'd be Whateley

I do have a feeling that Ribbon will end up designing outfits for Venus inc. though, they'll appreciate the advantage of the clothes dissipating after 24hrs...
EDIT, speaking of which how much you want to bet Ribbon's weights are Ebidium which may be able to hit a fully light Phase?

I also don't think a door is closing on Spring 2007. Whisper still needs to finish and if canon stories can still traipse back into the spring as needed. Certainly if a lost canon author returned, they would also be welcome to go back to the Spring for their setting.

mhalpern wrote: Same people who have written every story with Ayla in it since Diane Castle stopped writing, admittedly there's less development for David and determining his mutation will be a challenge without Diane to determine it, but they will cross that bridge when they get to it
As far as what his mutations would be I'm guessing it will involve some form of GSD since Puppet was heavily GSD'd and Ayla has what could be considered heavy GSD. It all depends on what the goal of Nimbus is on introducing the mutations to the Goodkind kids.
Oooh... what if Greg/Grace cracked and is Nimbus and doing this to get even with the rest of the family in some way.

Well, one of Absinthe's nemeses has been name dropped as being added to the local MCO office in Odds and Ends, so Absinthe's inclusion seems likely.

Yeah that's what I've been thinking, however the serum was contaminated and all the entire process REALLY did to Ayla was accelerate his aging by 2 years and his BIT along with it, but Nimbus doesn't know that, or does he? Based on the terminology in that Nimbus segment,Dreamer wrote: Actually, based on the fact that Nimbus took something away from Belphegor's sabotage of Jobe's serum for Ayla, which made Ayla more female and when a version further modified by Jobe was used on Belphegor that turned him temporarily female, his final goal seems to have something to do with transforming a male completely female. If I remember correctly he has 5 things he is aiming for and succeeded with 3 of them with Ayla. So looks like poor David when brought in will be Ayla's little sister, if those details point towards Nimbus' end-game with his plan.
"The first trial of his technomantic transforming drug had been an unmitigated failure, even though he had sacrificed twenty-seven souls in a necromantic ritual to power the serum. Granted, she was now a mutant and still alive, but hardly viable. The second trial was only a success in the loosest meaning of the word, despite three times as many sacrificed souls. Three of his seven objectives had not been met, even if the little wretch had successfully been turned into a mutant. But with this new information, he would succeed." - excerpt from Ayla and the mad Scientist ch 22
whatever his plans are for David, they aren't pleasant, both Ayla and Melissa's mutations are BIT related, whether or not he had something to DO with how those bits ended up beyond just activating them, is up for debate, after all if you read "Ayla and the Late Trevor James Goodkind" its pretty well hinted that Trevor looked up to his mother as a role model " I had always looked up to her as my personal model of overcoming adversity and pain through learning and determination." -excerpt from Ayla and the Late Trevor James Goodkind.
However that said, we should try to put together everything we know about David's personality, cause we know that WONT change. maybe it would help power speculations, though I expect he'll end up being shorter than Ayla... Turnabouts fair play.

Keep in mind that I and the other original canon authors set the bar very high on fan fics converting over to canon stories. Just joining canon doesn't automatically guarantee that those characters will be brought into the storyline. As I explain it to incoming authors, there's a couple really major considerations against it from the start:
1. Fan fic is generally not written with the same intent as a story planned out as a canon story. There's a fundamental difference between a story written from the outside that plays in the sandbox, even explores how the various toys can be used with each other as if no one else is ever coming back to that sandbox and it doesn't matter what you do in it,.. and one in which you play with the sandbox and toys knowing that everything you touch has an impact on someone else who is sitting the sandbox playing their games at the same time.
2. No matter how much you've read about the WU, there are still things that people don't know... and those holes tend to be places that fan fic authors want to fill. Unfortunately, just because they are empty now doesn't mean they are meant to be empty forever. And once you step inside the canon lines, and start to learn how those holes are really filled... it can significantly change how things would play out. It's the "Jimmy Olsen in Supergirl" issue. Jimmy/Jame's first inclination after years of working with Superman... is that when shit happens, he calls for the guy in blue and red. Even if Kara is capable of handling it. And maybe even if Jimmy himself could handle it. It's a natural thing to reach for the most powerful tool on the shelf when something comes up... even though, realistically, the more delicate tool may be better for some tasks. Or skill in using the tools more important than the power level. But... plug in certain power sets into team availability and it can significantly change the way things play out. So, if you have a plotline that is going to run for multiple years and adding a certain powerset makes all that impossible to play out... you probably don't want that powerset in the mix.
3. From a purely practical standpoint... taking the time to rewrite an existing already seen fan fic to be canon... is a huge waste of time. People have already read the story, many probably have as much of an idea of what will need to be rewritten to be canon anyway... so why spend weeks or months reworking when you could write something new that no one has read? Look at how many people have gotten brought into canon and either only finished converting their fan fic to canon or didn't even finish that process before hitting a wall....
Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

Since it's been brought up.
IF I manage to make canon, I haven't talked to any of the original writers about it so there is the big IF, I'm only going to ask about two fanfic characters to be made into canon MC's.
The reasons are pretty much as Kristin stated. Most of the characters don't have any real role to play or show in Whateley canon, their powers are too out there or powerful, or I can't think of ways to change their origins enough to make a retelling interesting.
So no matter what don't expect to see the same characters popping up even if I manage to make it. That's why I have several premade character ideas waiting in the wings that haven't shown up anywhere, some of whom are just as angst ridden, insane and odd as my fanfic guys.

And yes, I have both 'Girl for Pele' and 'Championship' in mind when I say this. I am notorious for being unable to finish what I start, and while I had done my best to write them as if I were looking to get them added to canon, I knew from the outset that the odds of me finishing even part of either one was minimal. Yeah, I have entertained some hope that maybe one of the CC might pick up the ideas there, but that was a pipe dream rather than a serious expectation. Ideas are easy, follow through is another matter entirely.
Out, damnéd Spot! Bad Doggy!
