Isn't it interesting how one person's outrage can infect so many others, even without magic. Throw a little juju into that mix and it gets explosive.
Anywise, may your muse keep gifting you with tales to share.

I assume that the FBI were spinning a line trying to claim jurisdiction based on the kidnappings.
(FBI only get it automatically if the kidnappers cross state borders, or are likely to. Didn't happen and by the time the FBI found out it had resolved so never could happen)

I really love Danny as a character, I have no idea why exactly but every scene in which he appears, I get instantly excited.
Honestly, when I began to read this story, I thought it would be about her finding out how her spirit has manipulated her, but it maybe a little too soon for that. I liked your decision to explore the spiritual leader aspect of Kayda. And now I am wondering how it will impact her live at whateley.

Lisa X Danny Ship? Either she's bi? Or not? Or If It's You, It's Okay... Or Danny-sexual... So many options...
Then again, there's Trisha and Sandy... He might not even get a steady girlfriend, and instead have repeated flings...
Surprised me with the jump to Carson at Whateley! Nice callout for the racism and bigotry. I wonder if Kayda'll get a debriefing for the events once she gets back to Whateley...

Well its definately an indicator of where Kayda's troubles will be, at least this time they aren't as, lethal at least not as a rule.

It fit doing the 'history review' but for two different ends - the radicals to justify going to war, and Kayda's dream to show it's wrong.Malady wrote: Liking the Dream and not-Dream juxtaposition! And Farm Boy isn't teaching Laura - that's Tractor. Tiny error.

Who knows what trouble with girls Danny is going to get into?

Just to show that Carson IS aware of what Kayda's up to over the summer, so we might see some different interaction there, or she points him to Totem. She's not quite a typical student

I am guessing that the Dreamquest thing was to show Kayda that neither side was totally in the right or totally in the wrong.
Does stopping a war count as "Superheroing?" Kind of hard to chastise Kayda for preventing the number of deaths that situation could have led to.
Poor Danny, all the guys are going to call him gay, while he' having girls crawl all over him.

Um, yeah, maybe. I think something like that might perhaps have been said.

Not quite. It was about her finding her role as Ptesanwi. She could be a warrior chief, or a healer, or many other things. She was shown those specific events to understand what she should make of being Ptesanwi.

True, but she won't see herself as a superhero. She'll see herself as a Lakota shaman who stopped a potentially bad situation - to save her People.
Poor Danny, all the guys are going to call him gay, while he' having girls crawl all over him.

Lets see, he will get the same sort of motivators that inspired Phase to commission the world's most expensive "beat people off" stick, Venus Inc will want him as token male model, the tame end of the pranks in Poe will cause him to shift to cat boy, hard to imagine what the REAL pranks will do to him (okay its easy he'll go full Danica on sight), a source of embarrassing stories about him will live in the same cottage, he might contemplate Wondercute as a place of refuge, however some of the aggressive threats will be diverted by a certain combat final, the "never mention the word 'rape' when Kayda is armed" final

Very interesting song to start the story off with. Danny, stuck between a rock and a hard place, headaches and potentially more physical changes or spending time in the form of a hot female which he doesn't want. Kayda wondering if she would be that caring of a mother, then mentally freaking out for a moment and wondering where the thought came from, guess she has changed even more than she suspected. Danny upset over lingerie and forgets who he is talking to, oh boy. Ouch, only 5 and a half month since then, felt like a lot longer with all she went through.
Danny is afraid girls won't like him at Whateley, thinking they will just see him as cute. Boy, is he in for a shock. And I would go with Alexis, nice name and further from his boy name. When Danny finds out most of what Kayda is telling him about the bi girls at Whateley is true, he is going to apologize to her and beg her for help, at least I think he will. Oh boy, Danny thinking Kayda is not telling him everything when she doesn't know. A talk with her spirits is going to happen and soon.
Why is Wakan Tanka not there to greet her, something major is happening and it is going to be trouble. Matohota pranked Kayda, nice to know more of the spirits have a wicked sense of humor. All those spirits showing up, trying to get her to think about what it means to help the people and who she is, yikes. Talk about pressure.
Most people have to do this without spirits guiding them or helping them see they have to figure it out on their own. A vision quest, answers to her questions, I can see why she is frightened."You must find your own answers as to who you are, and what your purpose is," Mato said gently, almost parentally. "Wakan Tanka knows who she is, but she cannot tell you who you are. Only you can do that."
I like these guys, good natured teasing each other and joking around. Okay, that turned dark quickly, talk of how she should have called down the cloud on the rapists or let the Ghost Warriors maintain the tribe's honor. Oh boy, talk of being wolves and revenge for dishonoring the Ptesanwi, Kayda is either going to stop them or something bad is going to happen.
*winces when Kayda's mom uses her full name* Yikes, she isn't getting out of there without an answering her mom likes. At least Mom understands why Kayda needs to do this and is letting her go. A spell released from the copper spike has that big of a boost, dang. Plus going to make charms using them for her teammates, talk about a power boost. I wonder what kind of answers Kayda will find on her vision quest.
Danny and his mom having "The Talk" due to his changes, oh boy, poor boy is going to be more bright red than Rudolph's nose once it is done. Her saying it will make part of the talk easier if Danny is naked, yikes, not something a child wants to hear from a parent. Beet red from head to toe by the time it is done, poor kid never had a chance. Yikes, Mom already in shopping trip mode and planning to get some of the Sioux Falls girls to help out, including the one Danny has a crush on. That is just cruel to the poor boy, elrod, funny but cruel.
Yikes, all that for a vision quest, now that is truly roughing it. At least Dan Bear Claws is feeling remorse and foolish over being drawn into Gray Skies plot to force Kayda to come 'home'. Okay, I have to agree on that one, a civil rights violation for gang rape, that is sickening, that is a slap on the wrist. There are some in the town who aren't guilty, but only a few we have seen so far. I would punish the rapists, the people who watched and the corrupt local authorities that tried to cover it up and protected the scum. Anything else would be going too far imo.
Ack! Poor Danny surrounded by girls who think he is cute and are teasing him, his Kryptonite! Now Trisha Roberts teasing him and Sandy kissing him to prove he isn't gay, if this keeps up poor Danny might pass out from overload. Dang, Sandy knows how to make a boy blush that extreme. Nick Wilson, bigoted idiots always judging others for things they don't have control over or a choice in. Oh boy, Danny convinced to stay in town by Trisha and Megan, with the bigots in town this is a bad idea.
Oh crud, Tyler Peterson with Nick and Chris, attack him and if he defends himself the **** sheriff is going to charge Danny with aggravated assault just because he is a mutant. Surrounding him to attack, assaulting at least one of the girls for trying to protect Danny, if they don't get in trouble the feds are going to make sure the sheriff is in serious trouble. Wihinape taking over and Tyler is down, Nick down next, Chris tries to run but is knocked to the ground. At least they know next time they won't get off so easily, oh course that could mean they come after him with a mob with firearms instead.
Tyler attacking with handgun now while Danny runs, with multiple eye-witnesses there is no way the sheriff can pin this on Danny without the feds coming down on him hard. Yikes! Bullet to the leg, having to hide and think. Didn't know mountain lions were nearsighted, interesting. Lisa and Sandy show up, good to be reminded not everyone is a bigot around there. Tyler going to kill Danny and the town would back him despite witnesses, sickens me.
In her dreamscape while Tatanka watches over her body, though her feeling gnawing hunger there proves it is a lot different from normal dreams. Okay, that is different way of flying. All these questions and then confuse her more when she answers. Happiness and physical prosperity are not the same thing, are they? Hard to answer with how modern society tries to drill into our heads you can't be happy without physical prosperity, leaving many confused and frustrated because of it.
Seeing that small tribe raises a lot of questions. Then a modern city, with the people living in a daily grind that leaves them upset and unhappy a lot. Having to answer the question for herself so they know what prosperity means, a heavy burden for one so young to carry.
Yikes, Danny trying to cover the pain with humor, he is hurting bad. At least June is keeping a calm head, going to the local doctor might end up getting Danny killed at this rate. Lisa noticed Danny was female in mountain lion form, sharp eyes. Ack! Lisa is a good friend but now she wants to go shopping with Danny while he is in girl form, oh boy. Poor kid can't catch a break, it seems.
Red Eagle is an imposing figure of a man, Lame Bear is going to get some people not guilty or involved with the attacks hurt with the way he is going. Oh boy, they know about the attack on Danny, this makes matters worse. *eyes bug out* Bringing the UN into this, matters just got a whole lot worse. Red Eagle is scary when angered, I understand his reasoning on not wishing to act though. Still, wish something could be done to those boys without it starting a war.
Broken promises and worthless treaties, all for greed or lust for power. Some hard lessons in history and the nature of man. to learn no treaty was worth the paper it is written on. That would sober anyone.
Lame Bear is trying to get them to do a suicidal attack, even if the UN condemns the US and brings public pressure to bear it wouldn't bring back those who die. At least Broken Tail and Red Eagle are seeing reason, once it comes out Kayda and Danny are mutants there will almost no sympathy, unfortunate but true.
Lisa may be Danny's friend since 1st grade but dang she knows how to manipulate the boy. Wihinape is giving Danny a complex with taking over and transforming like that in front of his best friend. Plus Lisa jealous of Danny's figure in girl-form, should have seen that coming. Ouch, Sue too to the group of growing females for the trip, plus Danny has a purse, ouch to his male ego.
Good lord, I can't believe that happened, offers them more than fair compensation and it turns into a battle because of one idiot soldier and people on edge. Ambushed from both sides, slaughtering them down to the last woman and child. It doesn't matter who started it, killing innocent women and children isn't justified imo. Ouch, mistakes on both sides indeed. Mato is wise, still today many forget that an eye for an eye will make the whole blind and lash out over the most minor of reasons with extreme or deadly force.
Oh boy, things aren't going well, Three Tails is trying to start a war along with others, while Broken Tail, Red Eagle and Dar Bear Claws are trying to prevent the destruction of their people in a war they can't win. Thinking that the Ptesanwi will be enough reason for the UN to shame the US government into giving back their lands is foolish at best.
Kayda in a battle in the past, leading warriors to try and stop the slaughter of a village full of only the elderly, women, and children. Yet the colonel just sees her as the leader and says to kill her. If only treaties really worked, if only peace was truly given a chance.
All that history, all that pain and suffering for the People due to false promises and a corrupt government who only cared about its people and not the natives they were displacing. It is sickening how the United States came to be and how far we still have to go with ending bigotry, prejudice, and corruption by the officials we put into power and expect to make things better.
Good grief, Kayda is trying to win a battle she can't win, she needs to learn a lesson but trying to win this battle isn't it. *sighs* They just aren't getting it, wanting a glorious battle and don't care if some of them die thinking it bring news of their plight to the world and change things for the better for those left behind. Oh boy, one of the eldest chiefs says he thinks putting on war paint over this is a good idea, after how the People have been treated for so long and how Kayda was treated. This isn't going to end well.
A flag of truce and the Colonel disrespects it because a woman is holding it, ugh. Attacks her, tries to kill her, ignores a flag truce, no honor at all. Honor the flag of truce or die as a dishonorable dog. If any of his troops attack her, they are arrogant fools.
Great, the hotheads are going to war, but without the council's approval. They are going to harm innocent people, possibly even those who have defended Kayda and Danny. If that happens Kayda's wrath will a terror to see.
Lectures him on religion and he calls them all heathens, she has a lot of patience not to silence this arrogant fool. Wounding then healing him to make him see who she is and that she will defend her people. Kayda is growing in wisdom already.
They are going to try and take the town hostage and innocents will be hurt or killed, despite the Ptesanwi telling them to stand down. Capturing the criminals is on thing, hostages is another. The priest at the church, that is definitely going to come back to bite them in the ass. Okay, no needless deaths, at least they are trying for that. But plans rarely go off as initially conceived.
Even Major Peterson under this colonel is scum, going to lie about he village and just as arrogant. President Harrison and Rev. Henry Whipple, now this battle scene just got a lot more interesting. At least Kayda has learned something from all this, wanting true lasting peace is better than such warfare. If only it could have actually happened this way.
Oh boy, all that to isolate the town and capture their targets and hostages. Cut off from outside phones, various hostages taken, the judge and deputy sheriff caught, but the sheriff warned and now expecting trouble. Knew something would mess up their plans.
Wakan Tanka and Grizzly there and Kayda wondering why. The rules are different for Kayda than for the other People, figures. Wakan Tanka has a good point about American culture being a blend of elements of all the cultures which came together. If only more people would see that and stop all this stupid fighting. Yikes, uniting all the People, all the Nations, they are asking a huge task of her, hope she is up to it.
News of what is going on in town and they need Danny to use Wihinape's tracking skills to find Kayda now. Another Wounded Knee incident or worse, this is catastrophic! Sheriff escapes an ambush and is on the run. A spell to summon the spirit of Wabli to fly, that is a major upgrade to her mobility and speed. Ah, a powerful spell that a takes a lot of essence, only for emergencies I guess. Charms to protect those she cares for, she thinks ahead more than some of the other wizard-types we've seen at Whateley.
Oh boy, the sheriff has gained some men who might be armed as well and they are after the doctor who destroyed evidence to cover up the gang rape. Sheriff and 8 armed men who have shot at them, this has gone very bad like I knew it would.
Shield charm that last a few minutes, smart and practical. These men are acting like fools, disobeying the Ptesanwi like that will have them in huge trouble. Having to go full Ptesanwi and summon Tatanka at full size to get them to let her past, good grief, these men are a stubborn bunch. Assembling at the gym under her orders, hope she can defuse this situation without anything getting killed.
Taken by warriors and held like this, yet Scott Hollings is arrogant and stupid enough to insult her and stand up, probably getting ready to attack her. Stopping them from killing him, yet confronting all her rapists and making them know what she could do right now. Lame Bear saying they have the right to see justice done, as I said before Kayda is scary when angry. Ted Jergens is a moron, she is trying to defuse things and make sure everyone gets out of it alive and he attacks her.
Mrs. Jergens is more reasonable than her husband at least, just wishing him not to die. Yikes! That serious of a wound, lose use of his arm if not lose his arm. Everyone is shocked she would heal him, someone who hates and attacked her, yet she said the right thing. She is a shaman, a healer, not a butcher. Lame Bear needs to let his anger go, it isn't good for him physically, mentally, or emotionally.
Great, the sheriff has 11 others now along with the doctor and are holed up in the doctor's office. Ghost-walking charms to smoke them out, if Kayda tries to defuse that situation the men inside will probably shoot to kill. How to get out of this without anyone dying, it is looking more bleak with the sheriff and his group in play.
Ptesanwi manifest again to cow the warriors and get them to keep the people in the gym safe and sound until this is over. She is becoming a true leader, even if she has to do it with a show of power for now. Kayda goes out there, risking her life to save the sheriff, doctor and other men, yet Doc Robinson says she started it and calls her a filthy mutant. He never learns. Ghost-walking to firebomb the clinic with a Molotov cocktail, she stops them but the moment they turn visible are under fire and one of them goes down.
Healing the warrior and taking fire from the idiots inside the clinic, they finally stop as they see how useless it is with her shield spell up. Dang, tweaked her combo shield and ghost-walking spell down to a form-fitting shield, impressive. She is going to KO the guys inside like with the Paris MCO, though wonder about the aftermath. Several down but eventually someone was going to alert the others, it is never easy.
Rats, no time for revenge on the doctor. Unloading the guns and hiding the ammo, all the guys and nurse inside KOed. Now we just have to deal with the fall out of it and what the feds will say about the whole thing.
Talk to Senator Jennings and Hazel Two Bears, then have to wait for the state police to arrive to sort everything out. Senator Jennings and the governor are coming, whoa. The governor actually moderated the talks and kept things from going out of control, skillful mediator. FBI and BIA, yikes, it is much more serious than the Lakota warriors thought it would be. Kayda exhausted and having to deal with this, including the sheriff and Doc's attitudes. Media vultures hounding her for answers despite how exhausted she looks, at least she had enough presence of mind to just say I don't know.
Leslie Norton, Denise Strickland, Amy Miller, Raquel Johnson, and Lorie Taylor. Nice to see more people who aren't bigots in that town. Lisa, Sandy, Trisha, and Megan sitting with Danny and having him embarrassed, poor kid is going to have it worse at Whateley. Telling about Whateley without revealing its name or too much of what actually goes on there in specific terms, smart.
Oh boy, talk of periods and Kayda's first one, plus no Midol to help with it, ouch. At least Cassie finally feels sorry and apologizes, ashamed and sorry for her part in it. At least Kayda doesn't hate her anymore. Calling Whateley her home, she has changed a lot since we first met her and she first arrived at Whateley. What a difference a few months can make.
Oh boy, Mrs. Carson watching the news reports on what happened, how the FBI is trying to calm jurisdiction. I hope Mr. Lodgeman is right about the governor not letting the FBI and DPA steamroll him. Dang, got everyone in town to toe the official line, quick and smart. Plus Mr. Lodgeman knows Kayda isn't that powerful...yet. All that to intimidate the town to keep the FBI out, dang. If her guesses are correct, that is.
Crud! Kayda on the news and talk of her being someone important to all Lakota people, this is bad. Charlie is right, anchors will be stupid, think something like that is funny only to tick off a lot of people. Joking about retiring before the fall term, because girls like Kayda and Lanie make life interesting. Kayda and Danny both show how much they have learned and grown since manifesting. And that vision quest of Kayda's definitely opened her eyes in many ways. A wonderful story and even a nice history lesson in part. Can't wait to read more of Kayda and Danny's journeys.
Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked.

Also, I have no idea whether this was intentional or not, but this was an excellent story for the night before Yom Kippur. Just before the day of self reflection, religious fasting, and learning to move forward from mistakes you gave us a story about self reflection, religious fasting, and learning to move forward from mistakes. Two thumbs up, to go with the top marks from earlier.

All the other first Gen TGs, except Mokole (I think) have, pretty much accepted or embraced what has happened. (We don't really know about Folder). Even the incoming Freshmen, Ribbon, Knockoff, Roulette, have come to acceptance.
As for the gay bashers, I wonder whether Kayda, Wondercute, or Danny shredding one of them happens first.

Well, Esoteric is not really at peace with what is happening to him currently. Ayla cares about people but he has difficulties showing it to those who he is not really close to. Some readers thought that it was strange that while Ayla was the one guiding Frank during the introduction, he didn't really show much compassion even thought their situations were really similar, but it makes sense for Ayla. For Danny, Ayla is already Kayda's friend so it would be a little easier for the two of them to have a genuine conversation about Danny's problems.

Hopefully though, Whateley Administration will work hard to ensure she only gets called into disputes as a last resort, when conditions have deteriorated to the extent of an imminent war, with the possible exception of helping advise relevant authorities on possible strategies they can use to help defuse situations.
As for Danny, he's understandably angry, confused and embarrassed by events that have happened to him - although of course, when he arrives at Whateley next month, he'll be greeted with "Welcome to the club" and quickly find he's far from alone - earlier threads have pointed out Ayla, but it's possible other new starters will also be less than enthusiastic about the changes that have happened to them. The support network of Poe will also come in very useful on the days he has to endure Powers Testing, as they'll almost certainly want him to repeat all the physical tests in all four forms: normal, catboy, "slut-kitty" and full-on cougar.
While Jade & co may try to rush him into WonderCute (which Wihinape would probably love, especially if she's been briefed on them by Tatanka), he'd almost certainly resist as hard as he could (although when embarrassed into catboy form, he may find it hard...) However, there is one other campus organisation he'd almost be obligated to join - The Nations.

I do wonder how that and other relations with the townspeople will play out now in future, both with the fear of the Lakota instilled in them, but also a more favourable opinion of Kayda as she intervened.
In future, I guess I'd like to see Kayda taking an active role in tribal matters so as to prevent disastrous courses of action such as that which was narrowly averted (so far, at least). While the gathering was noted as being male-only, I feel she would likely be afforded the privilege of attending due to her position, should she so choose (and maybe push a little).
Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

Danny is in for some interesting times. Kayda WILL get dragged - reluctantly, and over the objections of Mrs. C and Totem - into tribal affairs.
And as Ptesanwi, she WOULD be permitted into the male-only council fires. Actually, they're for warriors and heads of household, so in the past, a two-spirits woman who took a wife would be the head, as would a female warrior (generally also two-spirits). It's just that none of that applied in the circumstances of this story.

elrodw wrote: So - my question is simple: would you rather have a multipart story with cliff-hanger, or a longer one-part story?
I'm addressing this here, largely because my response is specific to this story. I thought that this story being posted as one was fine, as the point I'd think best for a cliffhanger would be about when Kayda finishes with her Hembleciya from how the story plays out, but definitely not in terms of length. The only way I'd see a break there truly working would be if Kayda 9 were written as four or five considerably smaller chunks to be posted individually. As such I think it all being one is fine, and it leaves plenty of potential implications floating about, even if they need a little more substance to really make them stir the discussion, as was mentioned in one of the first comments.
Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

Snerk!
Yeah, they weren't exactly thinking that through clearly, were they?
And BTW, the original Indian Reservation land for the Lakota was WAY bigger than Connecticut. All of west-river SD plus a good chunk of Wyoming.
