  • This was great!

My bets on Karma being a Luck Pole are super high.

On the things at the very end, I'm betting Petshop's escaped creations are gonna mess that up.

  • I'm not going to say anything about the vague hints of possible clues and connections strewn in odd places in the story.

It's far more fun to see speculation about how this fits into the big picture - if it even does

  • Reflecting on this story, the odds that Karma is a probability mangler just went way up.
Warning: Spoiler! [ Click to expand ]

Between the two hypotheses of 1) Those events happened by random chance; or 2) The probabilities were affected by some outside force, and that force was that Karma is mangler, I would say that a Bayesian analysis would greatly favor the latter.

"In the Muppet Show, Statler and Waldorf criticize the other skits and other Muppets with bad jokes," Karma explained.

"Did she say our jokes are bad?" the first spirit asked.

"She only says that because she hasn't seen the film to compare the jokes to!" "Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho!"

Thank you for this, those two are classics and I love them.

Hehe, believe it or not, those two have been in the Whateley Bible since the beginning, we only just got around to them.

We've seen them before, but I don't remember where. I can't find them in the Wiki, but this is not their first appearance.

  • Laura needs to gadgeteer the hell up and build herself a caffeine-injecting shock-delivering watchband. Sooner rather than later. Otherwise Bailey's liable to conspire with Bianca and Morgana on an alternative solution. Maybe she'll just get herself a Pillow of Silence, but maybe she'll opt for having them add a flip-and-drench option to Laura's mattress. Best not to gamble.

I wonder if Karma picked up a passenger from the cloak and staff she found.

  • Maybe a small rolley bot that when she doesnt turn off her alarm rolls up and injects her with a massive dose of devisor coffee

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

  • As for the (very likely IMAO) theory that Karma is a probability warper, I find it interesting that this is set almost three weeks before "The Trouble with Karma", and no one (including Karma and Imp) had figured out that she'd manifested already, at least partially. That could be some Teela Brown level odds mangling, if her power is actively keeping people from noticing it. Though unlike Teela, she does have some sense of self-preservation, so I dunno.

Especially if it influenced the nickname-turned-codename her mother gave her, from before she had actually manifested... time travel isn't allowable in WA (for anyone other than a GOO, that is, and even the one time we've seen it happen, Gothmog admitted that he was bending the rules in doing so), but what about advance-motion probability waves?

  • In "The Trouble with Karma", towards the end Karma states "I can manifest,” Karma protested. “Just don’t tell Mama…”

That is very odd phrasing ("can manifest", not "have manifested"), but does indicate that Karma thinks she has powers.

I have never thought about that phrasing before. Could it be that Karma has a Roulette-like selection of powers, without the burnouts?

Second Sight, like most esper powers, doesn't require those cursed with it to manifest.

  • I'm not sure I can accurately express my disappointment...with this forum.

Twenty posts about this story, the story had a group of children, one of them in a werewolf with that very nickname, plans were foiled, direct references to the snacks were made...and not one use of the phrase "meddling kids" in this thread!!

I knew Freya would be back. :cheer:
I'm going to guess that she's next year's villain though. They seem to be working on a very slow and methodical infiltration, taking over the school very slowly, luring many staff members to their side even after they've gotten through the walls and wards. I do wonder if using the Eye (presuming she still gets her hands on it) will actually backfire on her. Freya's power is strongest the longer she uses it on someone. Direct brainwashing reinforced by "natural" habits of devotion and submission forming. The Eye being so powerful, Freya could take over the whole school in an afternoon, but hopefully it would be superficial brainwashing, easily forgotten once removed.

I'm also pretty sure she's Tanya's villain to officially undermine. Well, maybe Tanya, Sterling, and Ping. Active Defense, Ignored Scout, and De-programming Specialist respectively.

Between being a champion babysitter, having a huge queue of devices for friends, cleaning, cooking, laundry...Laura is going to collapse soon. If Bailey doesn't murder her first.

I liked the little details of Laura using her direct experience with making children comfortable on Val. She has a future in daycare!

There are two distunct uses of "manifest" in these stories. One, as you alluded to, indicates a mutation (or other origin) becoming active. The other refers to producing something by way of specific powers (such as Ribbon's ribbons). The latter use is consistent with her statement.

OTOH, she made the ststement in response to the comment "She hasn't even manifested yet." She is a young (elementry school) child trying to talk her way out of having her mother told what she had done. You could substitute any number of words or phrases for the "manifest" in their statements and have it be consistent with their characters (eg. "She hasn't even bananafrittered yet." "I can bananafritter. Just don't tell Mama!")
