  • I thought I was having a bad day playing whack-a-bug with networking scripts and hanging up on endless tele-scammers, but it turned out to be a very good day because I got to read this story.

I am the kernel that pops in the night. I am the pain that keeps your dentist employed.

  • Excellent reading, and a great story of life from the PoV of someone who suffers from Rager syndrome.

Also this ties in nicely with Rachel's stories. :D

The scenes where she works out how to help Daniel find a channel for his energy are great. Leads to chewy speculations on the informal internal support networks for the UV students helping each other. :D

Reminiscent of the conversations between Delarose and Jimmy T after Halloween. :D

The scenes with the psychic character in the airport are interesting as well. The way that the changes that she detects are made manifest, and, how she detects/models the alteration in Daniel's personality, are very chewy.

How those basic techniques translate into the larger philosophical school of personality modelling, and, psychiatric modelling, is very chewy.

I can see several Ph.D's worth of work in there... :D

When reading the shower conversation's, one reply that i thought of, "When i was a girl, i didn't like guys who wouldn't take no for an answer. What makes you think that this has changed?"

  • Thank you Wasamon for one of the, if not /the/, best stories so far.

For showing the emotional problems many of the changelings go through.
For showing us a young girl who is heroic in a way most of the big time heroes, and none of the usual bigots, can understand. She let her father do monstrous things to her just to protect her little sister. And when things got completely out of control she is /still/ trying to do what is right and thinking of how her existence impacts on everybody around her.

And fo showing us how Rachel can be more than a one-dimensional fighting machine, and indeed can be the person that Dani needs to start healing. Because underneath all that 'don't give a shit' is another girl who is capable of just trying to do what is right for somebody who is in emotional pain (though she is all too happy to dish out the physical pain ;)

And at the end, Dani's hair is showing the answer to Pat's question. Her body might have been forced into a male form, but from the start the hair stubbornly tried to return to the gender norm for women. I am so happy to see Dani starting to claim back little bits and pieces of her life 'before him'. The nicely braided long hair and going gaga over her first crush to the point of doing that adorable little initials and heart thing in her homework, just as she had been dreaming of finally being old enough for.

This story gives me hope that both Dani and Altus may be able to heal. And Avsel, who has her own personal demons, may find the strength to defeat them in this very odd team up.

  • Thanks for the kind words, you all. This one wasn't the easiest to write out, even with the skeleton of a plot that Neo had left in Wilder's original character profile. I probably wouldn't have made the attempt if not for certain Discord conversations in January vis-a-vis transition-to-male students, among other things.

It was fun to bring together some of my characters, like Crescent Muse, and pair them with some of Neo's for new situations and solutions to specific issues. To whit, item #1 was figuring out a reason Wilder was NOT still in jail for murder. Hate him though we might/must, Agent Visellius had a definite point about the inherent danger of leaving Wilder (untrained) out and free, not to mention how the CCC had played fast and loose with a few regulations. We know it was for the best, but...

So, random responses to random responses, mostly Dreamer's:

    1. I didn't say it explicitly, but there were some basic tests for Wilder's reactions to sugar and caffeine. However, given his mental state for the entire month of August and much of September, he had enough rage triggers going on as it was. First priority was to teach him the basics of recognizing and managing his feelings so that incidents like the Humorless fight happen less frequently, and a blanket restriction on substances known to trigger his powers were a good idea in the short run. At Whateley, the research staff is overworked as it is, and they just hadn't gotten around to figuring out the safest way to test it. Much like high-level regeneration or mutation-specific allergies/irritants, this isn't something you'd want to go at blindly.

Also, his regular drink at meals is Japanese barley tea. Refreshing, fairly tasty if you like it, and zero caffeine.

    2. For Loup-Garou, while it was said that he had to be put down, I never said it was the MCO that did it. There's a reason this got under Nemean's skin so badly.

    3. No one's going to mention any symbolism in choice of Pokemon? I had a lot of fun trying to work subtext into that conversation :P

    4. "Rachel, you are going to give Security a migraine at this rate..." ---Dreamer, they've probably had an ongoing headache for at least two weeks at that point.

    5. The Rights of Man is worse than a hate group; it's a political coalition. It had a mention in "The Quantum Suicides" where one of the Senators on the panel / framing device for the story was a member.

    6. And finally, Swerve is getting his own short story in the next Whateley Anthology collection. I just need to decide on four or five other students to feature and then write short stories for them. I am open to suggestions, but if they're for anyone who's not in my personal toybox of NPCs, you'll have to bug their respective owners :P

  • An interesting look into the origins of a somewhat distinctive background character. Assorted thoughts, roughly in story order:

  • It's been a long time since I read Sera's origin story, but I think she may be a MtF transformee. At least If I recall correctly. If so then she may be having problems of her own with accepting what her BIT has enforced on her.

Sara is a changeling but she doesn't have a BIT, she may have had trouble at the beginning accepting what she is, but that wasn't because she's female, it's cause she's what the uninitiated can mistake Fubar for

  • She meant Sera Eir Magnusdottir, the Icelandic girl in this story, not Sara Waite.

And no, Sera is not formerly a boy. Neo wrote an introductory story for her, but I'm not sure who all has actually seen it. I've been trying without much success to remember where and how I got a copy in the first place, and where that copy's gone off to now.

But suffice to say that she has some daddy issues left unresolved and isn't in the mood to be friendly to most people just yet. Except for Tanya. If you look in Dorms 4 you'll see she's kind of stuck on everyone's favorite lavender lass.
