  • So first, let me apologize. I should have written down my initial comments elsewhere to capture my feelings, and then checked the thread to see if this was the appropriate to post them. I can see by the tone of the thread that it really wasn't the appropriate place. So again, I apologize.

As to my reading of the thread itself? I got five pages in. That's all I needed. The heart of the matter was addressed pretty early. I'm going to list the quotes that best address the issue. To see my response, skip to the bottom.

Elrod wrote: TK has to take a lower profile. You may not like how we choose to deal with it, but we HAVE to deal with it.

Elrod wrote: Are we deconstructing Team Kimba? Yes and no.
    (Snip)
I hope you can appreciate that in order to KEEP the characters around, we have to make them easier to write as BACKGROUND characters out of the spotlight, and that WILL involve changes to them. And we are very sensitive to our fans, which is why we don't pack them in a bus for a spring break trip skiing in the Alps and get electrocuted in a freak accident while posing for a group photograph, after a cable becomes wet during a storm.

Sir Lee wrote: losing Aunghandail. It is traumatic, yes, but is it really a nerfing? It has been implied that Nikki still has the memories and knowledge of Aung... somewhere. She just hasn't learned to access those fully yet. It may take quite a while, so again it is a temporary nerfing at most. And, as has been pointed out, Aung was not the best of influences in terms of personality, and she had a tendency to take old-fashioned approaches to things. So losing Aung might eventually *help* Nikki to develop her own approach to magic, which means a faster power re-escalation than she might have achieved while under Aunghandail's reactionary influence. In fact, losing one's elderly mentor and having to find one's own path is a traditional part of the Hero's Journey. Examples are simply too numerous to list.

Pheonix Spiritus wrote: When Elrod suggested I write a "Vignette" out of my Micro-Scenes I full on panicked, and that was for Hank! (Snip)

    Fey is hard.

    Ayla is a nightmare.

There is too much of their authors in them for others to easily pick up the characters, and all this is just someone looking in from the outside.

Ib12us wrote: My point being is this. NONE, NO ONE, will be able to do justice for those on Team Kimba for none will know what the author had intended. Its harsh, it hurts but its fact.

Elrod wrote: And I have plans for Fey. Big plans. Just like I'm writing some Chou into Kayda's stories, so too will I write more Fey. Hey, I like the characters, too!

    ...aaaaaaannnndd Ok.

    *Deep Breath* Ok.

You've convinced me. I understand your reasons now. I can get behind them. I don't entirely agree with how you've chosen to do it, but I understand why you feel that something had to be done. And looking back, I can see the care that has been taken with the progression so far. If the current cabal feels that they can't fully write their characters with the specter of team Kimba lurking in the shadows waiting to save the day... then TK must be silenced. It just pains my heart to see the old bastions taken down.

Still, I'd rather the universe moved on rather than stop completely, so... The King is dead. Long live the King.

Seeing the reasoning behind the decision has completely changed my attitude about the current state of the universe. I am able to see that the current changes are merely there to make way for tomorrow's bright new dawn. I look forward to seeing it.

...but for the record, I STILL can't picture Augh as an evil queen. Arrogant? Sure. She was royalty. But to have Carson say "it's good that she's dead"? Duuuuude... O.O

(Still looking forward to the next episode though.)

  • Given that they just couldn't retire her in the fact that she was a part of Nikki and the writers didn't want to send her of to Albuquerque on a bus (although a plane would be faster, but damn those budget cuts and non frequent flier miles) they did what I saw as the only recourse. Take a superduperoverthetop superhero and snap its neck. Yes it hurts but only for a little while. They killed off another of TK, in Kayda's story.

From what I read I found him/her interesting only to see it cut short as with several other characters. Many will be around till graduation at least, just not in the capacity that they were deemed for.

Sorry if I sound cynical as we've had the debate go on for a long long time. YEAH IT SUCKS, but unless a miracle happens... ALL those in charge did what they felt was right.

We were not part of the voting team, we were not privileged to the hidden dialog they went through to work out 'how' to do it and if we were, I'm sure the meetings would still be going on as newer people would want to be placed in the kitchen to put out the fire.

  • Well... I finally did that 'finish the whole thread' thing.

Whoooooo boy. I have angered a lot of people.

Everyone, I am sincerely sorry. I came in months late and re-ignited something which had long since been put to rest. I thought it would be a good idea to fire off opinions before reading the thoughts of others. It wasn't. I mean... It really, really wasn't.

I apologize. My posts were ignorant in the full dictionary sense of the word. (Also the sense that means inconsiderate and stupid.)

I can't clean up the mess, but I can promise not to make another one. I will not repeat this mistake in the future.

    1. Don't apologize. I'm sure as time passes there will be others that will skip to the end without reading through as its TL; DR for many.

    2. I should also apologize as I lost some of my temper. Alas you're lucky that you didn't get to see what I had first written, but I'm not saying what, and :)

    3. There are many threads that 'don't' need to be fully looked through as we jump around. But given the time it might be worthwhile until it becomes cumbersome as the threads grow like weeds.

So do jump in at times. Just be careful of sharks, piranhas and the occasional black hole as with those thingamabogs that I can't quite rightly describe.

Edit: I didn't mean as in don't apologize, apologize, but as someone stated earlier more eloquently than me, thanks for not fighting it to the end. Don't sweat it. May be better. umm yeah, gotta work on my peoples skill. Hmm, need dictionary. What's a human again?

I just want to go ahead and say that I'm REALLY happy to see this response. You're acknowledging that you made a mistake and committing to avoid it as much as possible in the future. That is SO much better than getting defensive and sticking to your guns about why you made the comment in the first place, and it's honestly very refreshing to see. Wish we had more people who would react this way after making a mistake. Kudos to you! :)

And I owe you an apology for venting like I did. If you knew my situation ... but it's a long story and I'm not looking for pity. Sometimes the frustration gets too much. Usually, my puppy sitting in my lap with BSPDEs takes care of things. Hyper-bad knee pain when she sat down today killed that. so ... sorry.

\I DO like Fey. I have a story set up where Fey plays a very important role. I wrote a bunch of Ayla in Wine, Women, and Ayla. You WILL see them occurring. But the story POV is different, and so they are going to seem a little different - but that's how the POV character is interpreting things. They're not being packed on a bus or hit by a satellite (What's the reference - anybody?) Just - please give us a bit of slack here. It's a very tough set of shoes to try to fill.

I feel the need to respond to this sentence. It is true that no one is going to write Ayla or Fey like Diane or Maggie, but I think that EE and Elrod are doing a good job. I've read professionally published fiction where the original author wrote a sequel where the character was less like he was in the previous books than Ayla and Fey come across in the way they have recently been written. (I hope that sentence makes sense.) I've also read professionally published fiction where I couldn't tell the characters apart from book to book, they had different names, but I was fairly sure they were the same characters.

So to Elrod, EE, Bek, and the rest of the gang (TINCC) keep on writing, we'll keep reading (and unfortunately complaining) and praising your skills.

  • Mark,

Welcome back, glad to have you! Yes, we're shaking things up a bit. Keep your hands and arms inside the story. :)

    Val:

Thanks for the kind words, always helps!

And on that note, let me point out that I know you guys think of the 'cabal' (Yes, yes TINCC) as a big group. Well, our unofficial motto is perhaps a bit closer to the truth than even we like to admit. Right now, active we have Bek, myself, the perennially overworked Kirstin and Warren with Elrod and Morpheus and Sleethr.

So, yeah, bear with us, this is going to be a little painful.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • And in all of this, NO-ONE has picked up on two references I made - one from a movie and one (in the past couple of days) from a TV show. :(

The first: skiing in the Alps and get electrocuted in a freak accident while posing for a group photograph, after a cable becomes wet during a storm. (movie)

The second: killed by a satellite (TV show - quite offbeat, actually)

Are you talking about "Dead Like Me"? I know where the protagonist is killed by a toilet seat from the Mir Station. Didn't watch to much of it as it was on a Pay Per View channel.

Never mind. I found it. Not going to put it up as I did a search. Its been awhile since I thought of that show. Loved it when I watched. For some it might be before their time.

I thought the movie reference was the comedy where they killed the royal family that way and then had to go find a new Heir?

  • Coming late to this particular discussion, but I have to agree with MarkReed that Ayla's reaction to Ms. Carson's demand that he doesn't support Nikki feels a bit spineless.

In Ayla's place I like to think that I would take expulsion over betraying my teammates. Now that way of rejecting authority is a big step for a teenager, and even in my late forties (in real life) it would not be an easy decision. But then again, Ayla was always described as unusually mature and determined, so I like to think he would have it in him.

The rest of the events can easily and credibly be explained by "teenagers don't always think straight". If they did, I might have more nitpicks but I shall refrain with good reason

  • Ayla is only lying to Nikki about whether he is helping; he's not actually betraying her. He may be a very loyal person, but he isn't blindly loyal. He agrees that Nikki crossed a line and needs to be reined in. It is not a betrayal to work against a friend for their own good when they're making self destructive choices.

It's also important to keep in mind that this isn't some horrible life-shattering problem worth Nikki or Ayla being expelled over. All that's happening is that Nikki is being required to work until she graduates without keeping the bulk of the money she makes. That is basically the same situation that Anna and Jade are in, as well as plenty of other Whateley students. Nikki is upset about it, which is understandable, but it's not like she's being oppressed or anything. She's just being reduced to a more normal budget (which fits with the whole "You are not a queen" message Carson is trying to drive home).

Typical, if such thing exists, student finances? Aquerna and Jade have virtually no money. Phase has virtually unlimited money. Everyone else is inclusively between those two extremes.

  • Regarding Nikki's financial status:

We do know she is not on even a partial scholarship, because from "Adjustments" it's clear that her taking a job is encouraged but not required.
Also, her clothes tend to be high-end, and Daddy custom-ordered a protective suit for her. So apparently they are quite well off.

That might sound odd since Dad is a public servant (DARPA director), but he might not always have been one: he might have made an appreciable "nest egg" in the private sector before taking the DARPA job. And it's not clear, but Mom might be financially comfortable on her own too.

Cash in the pocket? Probably she is doing fine, she can pick whatever sort of treats and things she wants. She probably would have to call mom or dad if she was looking to buy something expensive, she never came across as the rich kid with unlimited money. Her parents probably play the "your clothes are expensive" card to limit her cash too.

Her tuition is probably a partial or full scholarship from the US Government and some from her parents.

Sure. They're just discussing what level of wealth she had access to prior to losing that access, in order to better understand how much she has lost.

I think I was trying to figure out how much money she lost, AND how much she has now, to figure out how much of an impact it would have on her school life, and possibly beyond, to see if her reaction seems disproportionate or not.

    For example:

If the Solicitor was taking $1 of a $10 salary, vs. $100 of $1000 (yes, that's a lot less than Fey actually makes, this is an example...), same percentage lost, but different impact.

  • I was under the impression it was A LOT more than 10%.

Mrs. Carson narrowed her eyes until the girl flinched again. "The offer is payment of all of your royalties from modeling for the duration of your stay at Whateley, minus a stipend for living and educational expenses."

She'll have money left over for books and some clothing, it seems. Nothing else. Jade is effectively more wealthy.

Everything Fey had in her school account that is traceable to modeling income has been frozen, so it could be that MOST of her assets are no longer accessible to her. The Solicitor is taking it ALL - minus a living stipend. So yeah, it's very serious loss of income from modeling. As to Mommy and Daddy - never been stated how much she's getting there.

  • Her parents may not even want to give her more money. They might not want to undermine the lesson Carson is trying to impart.

Nikki does have other options outside of modelling if she needs more money for something during the next three years. She is a powerful mage, and there are plenty of wealthy people around campus who may be interested in hiring her to cast a spell for them, as well as elsewhere in the world when she's on break. That's inconvenient since she's being coerced into continuing to model as well, but it's better than nothing.

Resourcefulness and adaptability are also valuable lessons to learn.

Say, that's not a bad idea! She could set up a little shop, maybe have it move around interdimensionally to wherever she's needed. Of course it needs a catchy name. What about Spells R Us? That has a ring to it don't you think?

Open up Mages R Us. Or Little Shop of Mages.

Better yet she sets herself up as a travel agency that provides portals to various locations. She provides discount tickets, clandestine rendezvous points as with finding interdimensional settings of opposite universes that change ones perspective as with gender, age or animal.

  • Those kinds of stores benefit from a certain level of being hidden in plain sight. She may be too Feymous to run such a discrete business.

This makes so much more sense for Molly to do. Her codename is Gateway.

Back to Fey, seriously, though, she could also just drop out of Whateley. Maybe there's room on the bus for her a few other kimboids. :(

  • Team Kimba is probably too well know and too powerful to "drop out", there would be too many ('friendlies' as well as villains) who would go after them to control them (or for revenge).

I'll take a stab at that, how about pay-per-view stripper? Or would that still be considered 'modelling'?

    Possible scenario:

Fey and Tennyo decide they had enough of Whateley and run away on Yukinoyo. They take along Jade as well, since she did not take being left behind well in "Tennyo's Easter".
Overall, this is a bit more far-fetched than "The Penance Factor", but it would put three Kimbas on the bus at once. Bonus potential for some independent build up of power and influence, and a return when the plot demands a clobbering for some major bad guys :P

  • You know, you don't have to kill off or otherwise mess with the characters to get them off the central stage. You just stop writing about them... or you set the next generation 3-4 years afterwards. For the Academy is a high school, which means that the characters will move on in 4 years.

Considering much of the story is set in 2006-7... just move up the timeline to 2010-2011.

Writing the characters out should be handled like Paul Walker's character in the Fast & Furious series, where Brian O'Conner simply had differing needs than the rest of his crew, so just moved out of the limelight.

  • OK This has been discussed MULTIPLE times! Please read the first several pages.

First there are still many stories happening in this time period, so something had to be done.
Second there is a Gen 2 universe now set in 2016.
Third, having Fey disappear rather than having some trouble would totally remove her from the story and cause even more problems.

    Please DROP IT!

  • Geez, you don't have to be a jerk about it.

Furthermore, why is writing them out of the story in such a way to leave them as is... the same as making them disappear?

Does every Flash comic have to reference what Superman is doing? He's part of the DC universe and according to the main thrust of this thread, would be trash-canned because readers of the Flash would wonder why he didn't appear in Flash stories.

My point is that he wouldn't because he's not applicable to the story. And if you are writing about new characters here, Fey wouldn't be applicable unless the author made the effort to include her.

If the story is set during her time at the Academy, she'd just be another student doing her own thing. And if it's set anytime after 2010, she wouldn't even be there.

    ---

And yes, I did read through at least the first 15 pages of this thread. There are no reasons for doing what was done. Just how the ramifications could/might play out.

    ---

If you are looking for ways to write for overpowered characters, look at the Ostrander version of the Spectre. The Spectre is a nigh-omnipotent character who is the wrath of G-d manifest, tasked with seeking vengeance on those that have done wrong.

That level of power makes every other character in the DC universe look like ants on a sidewalk.

But Ostrander handled the character by providing morally ambigious crises. What does the Spectre do if the state executes an innocent man for a crime he did not commit? The state just committed murder, for which the Spectre must see vengeance. But the state is made up of representatives of all the citizens therein. Does he then seek vengeance on all the people of the state, killing them for the innocent man's death?

He has the power to do so... but should he? Is it right?

That's how to deal with overpowered characters. Not a nerf.

  • She has to pay money to a guy. How is that a nerf?
And there are a lot of fans of Fey who would like to know what's happening with her. By having her as a secondary character they get the satisfaction of seeing what's going on, and she can still haul out the big guns as necessary.

Except there are fans who are only around to see what happens next to their favorite characters. If you don't have them popping up in the background occasionally, those readers are lost. Of course you can stop writing about a character. Not writing about the characters doesn't solve the problem that some of the characters haven't been written, in POV form, for 5+ years. IOW, we already have the situation you describe. So your idea solves nothing. Now, solve the actual problem: people want to know what happens next to Jade and Fey and Ayla and Sara and on and on and there's no one around to write them.

One thing you need to be aware of is that you're arguing with other readers. They only know what they have been told so getting angry about it isn't going to accomplish anything. The discussions that happened originally when the story first released included responses from the authors and some of the posts TO the authors were somewhat volatile... as you might expect when ANY major event happens to a popular character in a long running series. Those discussions happened before the site was brought down by hackers and we moved here to the new site. So some of the answers are second hand from canon authors.

Ultimately, you need to understand that no one who is an author for the Whateley Universe hates the Whateley Universe or wants to see one or more characters gathering dust. Most of the original timeline authors have been working together on this project for more than a decade and we miss the ones who no longer drop by and chat... even if they don't write another word on their original protagonist character or not. So you have to forgive us if we get a little grumpy that you're angry that the character isn't getting written. Every time it is brought up, we're reminded that our friends are no longer here to talk about those characters.

We also know, because we're not new to this... that all the important stories, the stuff where the planning goes back years and years... isn't character dependent. Sure, there are Fey stories to tell about how Fey grows up, there are Jade stories to tell about how Jade overcomes her biological issues. But the Whateley Universe stuff that takes place in those four years that Jade and Fey and Ayla and Sara are at Whateley Academy? They don't HAVE to have Jade and Fey and Ayla and Sara to be told. Some of those parts can be played by other characters who once were going to be background people but are now front and center. Some of those things will still be done by Jade or Fey or Ayla... but they'll be done 'in the background' while a protagonist character does something else just as important. Or it'll happen completely off screen and we'll hear about it later "Turns out that Team Kimba were doing some sort of Sim training and it brought down the power grid from here to North Carolina... if that hadn't happened, we would have still been stuck in those mechs and we couldn't have saved the school."

This story is far bigger than any group of main characters. Every new freshman class is going to add new voices. There will be mid year transfers and new teachers. All of those from 2006 through 2010 have just as much potential as the original five or six Kimba characters of being central to any given plot. And we DO kill off characters. Bad stuff happens to characters. That's not exclusive to canon protagonists, orphaned characters, or otherwise... we're not going to do it lightly, but if the story and plotline will be served best with a character being trapped somewhere or even killed... it can and should happen.

As far as 'nerfing' goes... you have to understand that some things were meant to happen over time. Aung, for instance, was never meant to be a permanent avatar adviser for Fey. She was supposed to be 'absorbed'. But no one writing her stories... that wasn't clear to people. And as a result, any story that had a challenge in it that could be solved with high magic (which is a LOT when you have a nigh immortal Sidhe queen's knowledge to tap in to); the first reaction out of every reader's mouth (and justifiably) was along the lines of "why didn't you just go to Fey and have her cast something?" Well, the answer is... it's been two months since Fey learned she's messing up the environment. So she's still hesitant. On top of that... she might not have access to that spell because that part of Aung could already be lost. However, by having Aung sacrifice herself for her charge... we get a heightened dramatic scene and a resolution that people won't forget. We'll probably try to do so in non-letal ways most of the time because there is always the possibility of those authors returning or of us finding way to continue the story and we can never do that if they're all dead.

But at the same time... leaving the possibility open is not the same as asking the readers to speculate on how we will use the original TK characters in every story for the next ten years.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.
