Or, more specifically, Handler -- but I decided to use a broader theme.
Here's the thing: there are some conflicting information about the nature of Handler's powers.
- In "Baker's Dozen" she is described as a devisor/tk, and more specifically, that her inventions "was science that would tie knots in the brain of even the best technical experts… only another deviser would bother trying to duplicate the effort." Sure sounds like a devise to me.
- But in "Odds and Ends", she is described as a gadgeteer/tk and that the schematics for old versions of her inventions were on file at Whateley -- and more importantly, that Jade was able to build working copies of those devices. Since Jade is not really a devisor, those sure sound like gadgets.
So... which one? Both were written by Kristin. My thought is that the more recent one (Odds and Ends) overrides the old one. More importantly, being devises is not important to the plot of "Baker's Dozen", but being gadgets IS important for "Odds and Ends."
But best of all would be to justify the discrepancy in some way. My idea is that "Baker's Dozen" is told from the POV of Baker, who could be mistaken -- either because he's not that good at the tech stuff, or because Handler for some reason chose to tell people that she's a devisor instead of a gadgeteer.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Mmhmm. Baker is wrong in believing that Handler is a devisor. He's not alone. The reason for this is that many of Handler's gadgets can be have been examined by outside scientists and engineers and cannot be operated by others. The usual assumption in that case is that they are devises. But they are not. However, they DO rely on the operator being a high finesse TK for both power source (in many cases) and operations (the control 'surface' of some of the units is a small dot of conductive fluid inside of a circuit 'globe'). And, given that Handler has taken these steps mostly to keep control of her tech in a fight (no one can just grab up one of her matter displacement disks and use it against her team) and to protect her patents... she's not averse to letting people believe she's a devisor.
Baker is also wrong in his understanding of some of the other powers his team has. And believes that they are all with the team because they want to be. He'd be wrong about that too.
But... whether I could have told you the difference between devisor and gadgeteer when I wrote the story in the first place and definitively which one she was? Not sure. Hmm.. I think I originally had some thoughts that she'd be one of the first to splinter off his team because she felt she was being underutilized... and part of the nature of that power level and attitude was in having her be a devisor with some of the mad science instability that comes with that. But even by the time I was writing Fling and utilizing Baker's Dozen as an opposition force, I'd switched over to the limited field gadgeteer concept to keep the Dozen from having team devise based transportation and tracking systems.
Originally, the short story "Baker's Dozen" itself was just a submission piece that I wrote for my application to join the canon team, to show I could work with the genre... and we counted it as fan fic for a long while, even though there was no real reason to not include it in canon.

Heh... IIRC from my readthrough of Baker's Dozen and the Fling stories... You've got some interesting personalities and complications sown in there.

But, the Whateley Lab Geeks know she's a Gadgeteer, no? ... I guess if Jade was looking at Handler's stuff, she'd also think Devise, 'cause the TK, which is a mutant power, premeates the device, resulting it looking like a Devise? ... Wonders how many other fake Devisors are out there.

The Labs keep files on devises that were created by students. But those are basically just descriptions of what they do... the 'how' they do it is always suspect with a devise. On the other hands, Whateley keeps the full on schematics and documents on patents available for those things created by Gadgeteers or just inventive students. So yes, it would be clear to Jade in examining the records that it was hardware run/powered by TK. That would be in the technical data. The people who do not know whether Handler's gear is devises or gadgets are those people who just encounter her in the field and try to pick up and use something that had been thrown at them or a teammate.
After all, you can't just on the fly in the midst of a battle, run a patents office search for someone's tech and find out how it works and whether its a devise or not.
