  • I don't recognize most of these, I'm guessing they are WhatIF or fan fiction stories? Whisper is the only one of the bunch that is canon...

The first 6 are from the "Luna 1: Drafted" fanfiction story by Irvine_Himself, Whisper, as noted, is from the Whisper storyline by sleethr that became canon and Atalanta is from Katelyn's "Atalanta's Story" that's fanfiction as well.

Fairyking... your post seems a little devoid of details or why it was made... did you have questions about these characters or their stories?

  • The Opening Post appears here as well, with a user also by the name of Fairyking, at the end of Atalanta Book 1: bigclosetr.us/topshelf/comment/465967#comment-465967

    And is just as confusing?

  • If I understand the posts and topic titles correctly, Fairyking would like to see a story about this ensemble of characters, but may not know how to go about suggesting it/asking if the writers and the WU showrunners (for lack of a better word) would have interest in writing such a story. They may not understand that the three authors are not all working within the canon framework here with these characters.

However, in thinking about it, the original post becomes an example of just how much characters are not interchangeable cogs in a story machine.

To a point, the scenario is a bit like "What if the Justice League were enrolled as students at PS238 ?" (Said school's competition is named Praetorian Academy)

When I first responded to the post, it just had a list of eight character names and the subject was "the story needs work but they all are great characters" ... which... was far less obvious to interpret. :P

    ----

As to using these characters in a training team... at first glance over their power sets, I can tell you that most of these characters (if they even stick to the power ranks given above) are far too powerful to work as protagonist characters in a canon story. This should be evident by the way any one of them is capable of matching powers with more than one member of Team Kimba, whose members are noted to be in the top percentiles of the Whateley Universe. While it isn't a 'rule' per se... we are generally wary of concepts with more than 6 ranks of power traits and reject or revise those with 8 or more. There's some wiggle room there, as not all powers are 'equal', but its a quick and dirty rule to keep yourself from out building yourself. As a general reference, a character with 8-10 ranks of powers and the skills to use them effectively, is likely to be considered an A list hero or villain. 5-7 probably limits you from breaking into the A-list... unless you are as hardcore WITH your powers as a baseline Mage or a bad-ass normal martial artist is without them. Most with fewer traits are unlikely to ever make it off the C-list. Over 10? Well, control problems can compensate some for raw potential ... but having control problems with power potentials that high is likely to make you too dangerous to be moving around out in the world without constraints... and there might just be a suspension chamber waiting for you in ARC. Note - I wouldn't typically count Exemplar 1 or Exemplar 2 toward these numbers... as those are more 'limits' than they are 'powers'. A 'high' 2 might count as 1 point.

It's also wise to pick a concept role for the character and keep the main portion of your power traits in service to that role. By roles, I refer to things like gamer roles - tank, heals, dps, support/buffer... or more typical paranormal power game roles: brick, blaster, enhance/support, controller, communications, etc. A character that can fill multiple roles should generally be strong in one and weak in any others. Or reasonably effective in multiple things ... but not likely to be 'first string' in any of them. For instance... might be a brick, but not the brick you want taking the biggest hits. Might be a blaster, but is more likely to be taking down the henchmen than the big bad.

Most of these characters break one or both of these guidelines.

Atalanta was actually proposed originally as a PoV character for Gen 2. But we try to avoid using Paragon for protagonist characters. It is an extremely challenging trait to put in the hands of anyone you want to have challenges/obstacles. After all, its basically a wildcard power... and with a little creativity, it lets the character have the right key to open any lock. That's a pain in the butt to write... except if its an antagonist character. And THEN its hella fun, because every encounter with that opponent is going to play out differently (and not in a good way). It's a bit like fighting a power mimic. You never know what combination of things you have to watch for. And even with Paragon off the table, we couldn't come up with a variant of Atalanta's powers that her author wanted to write... so instead of trying to force the character into canon compliance, we recommended (and her author agreed) to just continue to write her as fan-fic / WhatIF.

    ---

And obviously, with them mostly showing as A++ paranormals... of course they would make an 'amazing' training team. But against what?
