Is it possible that there's no thread for Cally yet?
I really can't find it, so if it exists, the forum administrators have my apology and my request to merge this thread with the original to keep the forum clean.... if not, well here it is.
Anyway, let's talk about Cally, my favourite italian student so far.
I find myself wondering exactly from where in Italy she comes from, there is a lot of subtle (or not so subtle) cultural differences even between cities of the same region, let alone between northern and southern Italy, so I think that the place that she grew up as child can have a huge impact on her character. She has used the word 'belin' as curse word, googling it (as I had never heard it) I discovered that it's genoese dialect, and specifically it referes to the penis (a subject commonly used for cursing in all Italy), that would make her Genovese, however her propension for vendetta seems more akin to the colture in southern Italy, she also seems to strongly associate Jimmy's look with Sicily, why does he make her think of Sicily if she's from Genova?
Also Cally is an Exemplar, but she doesn't seem to have any highened physical ability (or at least if she does she downplay them something fierce) and her memory doesn't seem to be on par of the one of Chaka, let alone Ayla, is she an Ex-1?

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

All of that was explained in her backstory which was originally fanfiction on the old forum. I'm sure it will be posted eventually.
As to there not being a Callioupe thread… I think some threads may have disappeared.
I thought there was a character thread for Roulette before I made one but I couldn't find it. I remember specific posts on it and everything. Now with there being no Callioupe thread we just need one more for it to be malicious action, because I'm pretty sure posted on the Callioupe thread before.

I haven't read the fanfic, and if it was in the old forum it may no longer be available, so much of what I'm wondering about may sound obvious to people who have read it. Or maybe the canonized version will feature a different background and people trusting the fanfic will have the rug pulled from beneath their feet...
Anyway... I find interesting how Cally's inner dialogue strongly suggests without ever coming out and clearly stating that she used to be a boy.
It's also unclear to me at this point if she and Erica are aware that the other is a changeling (or possibly not, if the suggestions in Cally's case are red herrings). And sorta funny that both roomies are keeping this from the school...

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

My impressions, in addition to what Sir Lee said, is that Cally is in fact, quite capable of fighting on a physical basis, she's just of the pacifist demeanor. But also that she will emotionally and physically ruin anyone who crosses a certain threshold with her abilities.

For the record, Souffle Girl is herself Genovese, and so most of the Italian that comes out of Calliope's mouth is going to be in that dialect. Inconsistencies of regionality are definitely my fault >_>;

Now, if you want to listen me let my mouth run, read the following, just don't take it too seriously, let alone in a personal manner:
Personally I think that most italian people just use the Italian lenguage, maybe with some dialectal influences but still Italian, most dialects are lenguages on their own and are wildly different from one other, to comunicate with people of other regions one must use a common lenguage, add the fact that there has been quite a migration of people within Italy that mixed the population, a LOT, and that the mass media are in italian. Just look at me, I am from Bologna, I have relative from Ferrara, Mantova and Roma (yes, I use Roma instead of Rome, I think I can get away with it in this context), I have friends from most regions of Italy and I had to interact with people from every region, we just use Italian. Hell I don't even know any dialect, I was raised with Italian never saw the point of learning a dialect.
With that said, the only dialectal word that I've seen so far is 'belin', everything else is simple Italian.
As for Cally's regionality, that 'belin' strongly suggests that she's from Liguria, if she isn't it might (or might not) be worth to retcon it into the more vulgar but Italian 'cazzo' and if she's sicilian she might use 'minchia' instead.

I was just trying to figure out where is she from, to have an idea of her background, it wasn't meant to be a complaint. I hope to see her origin story (possibly sometimes soon), but in the meanwhile, if it's not a spoiler, where is she from?Wasamon wrote: For the record, Souffle Girl is herself Genovese, and so most of the Italian that comes out of Calliope's mouth is going to be in that dialect. See, I don't even know enough about Italian to spot whether something's in dialect or not. I do know that Souffle is Genovese, and by extension so is Calliope. I'd have to let her fill in the rest of the appropriate details.
Check this out sometime!

Speaking of dialects, I ran across this
article on linguistic tools
. Cally may not speak with a Tuscan dialect, but I figured the article might be of interest, or point to others that are of interest.
