  • I just discovered that you have a section of adult content. I see that there is supposed to be a button to click to get to it. But the button doesn't seem to be live for me. I'm wondering if the problem is in my settings or if you aren't live yet.

  • This is something we're looking into implementing due to some content issues that came up with one of our stories. Unfortunately it's not fully done yet. I think it was probably on Kristin's to-do list before the site went Kablooey earlier this week.

  • Nah, no problem. I just wondered if it was my imagination that the button wasn't live yet. No doubt the site crash has interfered with any additional stuff that was intended. So projects like this got put on the back burner so that we could have the site at all!!

  • I would suggest, however, to reconsider the label. "Adult rated" sorta screams "pr0n". Maybe something a tad more restrained, such as "mature content?"

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

I take it that you haven't yet seen the Helpful Diagram depicting the Shoggoth Lord melding technique in "I Looked into the Abyss, and it Winked"?

  • I could be wrong, but I think I did read that one already, but it has been a while. That line was something like 5 years ago I think, so I don't remember much of the details. I'll have to re-read it I reckon.

  • Ya... two directions I can go there. I can either finish building up a mature content section and then go through and figure out what all has to get put there. Which probably includes a large portion of the Library in addition to some of the WhatIF and canon stories. And put in placeholders in those original sections that refer to stories in the Mature Content collection (so you'll still know where to read them if you are going in order and searching/sorting for the next thing to read.

Or... we could go to ad-free and Google AdSense will no longer have any control over what we can post. And then I could just put the stories back where I took them from... :-p

  • Oh, cool. I've been meaning to set up a Patreon account so I could give back to the various webcomics and Youtubers I follow. It will be great to include y'all as well. Assuming this month works out and I get the new income stream I'm expecting, anyway. So far it's all looking good, but it is a bit of a gamble. We will see!

  • If it looks like people actually want to contribute by Patreon, then yes... I'll probably put the button up right beneath the Login panel

Will placing that button void your Google ads? If not I suggest you place it there irregardless of the expressed interest. I cannot (just now) contribute. But should I be able to, I'd like to be able to do more than click through your advertisers. In order to do that I would want an easy to find place to send my contribution.

  • +1 towards the Patreon idea.

I've been meaning to open a Patreon account.

If i can contribute towards WU costs via this method, then yes.

  • Also, just as a side-note of practical advice for avoiding ID theft.

    For anything internet-based, always use a disposable pre-paid, top-up-able credit-card.

This way you can have one of these card per company.

If one gets hacked, you only have to change one CC, and the maximum amount of money you can lose is the amount that you charged the card with.

It does mean a little more work, keeping track of things, but it's worth the effort, as you will get reduced insurance premiums for ID Theft insurance. :D

It's NOT a fool-proof system, but it has worked for me so far.

CAVEAT: I use this method in conjunction with my main banking being done with a banking institution that does NOT do online banking. I have to go in person to the branch, with an official form of ID.

Yes, this IS incredibly inconvenient sometimes, but it's better than me getting ripped off again.

I'm pretty sure that having a Patreon donation button doesn't impact Google ads in any way... BUT... I'd have to leave the ads active on the site until we've got sufficient donations, either way. There's a couple months of getting donations before Patreon pays out.

I've looked into it, and there's no problem with the two systems on the same site.

  • I’m really pleased that you have got the patreon account set up now. Luckily I can afford to pay $10 and the $1 option probably will be good for lots of people. Might just be an idea to enable $2-9 payments as well as I can imagine there will be quite a few people who can manage $2-4 a month but would find $10 a bit of a stretch.

  • There's an amount entry box right below the Supporter (at $10) amount, which you can fill in with any amount you want to. I think the value that it puts at the top is dependent on majority patrons selecting it. The other options are related to the specific 'reward' given to people who donate at that level.

I can set up other amounts with 'non-prize' values... but most people will figure it out.

  • Not your fault, its Patreon's design. It isn't very clear. But the work around (adding a bunch of false reward tiers) isn't ideal either.
