I just noticed a thing with the old site at www.crystalhall.org/ ...

It still loads fine... at first.
But there is now a <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="13;URL=http://www.crystalhall.org/geoplugin.inc.php" />line in the header...
Which, if you understand HTML, means that after 13 seconds the browser will automatically move to
www.crystalhall.org/geoplugin.inc.php ...
Which presents the visitor with what appears to be a Google Drive login page.

I'm not sure what was the goal here, but, well... it made it rather hard to access the older stories. It doesn't seem to have any constructive purpose.

I have to wonder if it is a new hack attempt -- this time intended to steal e-mail passwords?

P.S.: I like the new look of the forum pages -- smaller fonts and more topics listed per page seems to me a good change.

Sir Lee, if I remember correctly the redirect to the "google drive login" was part indeed part of the last hack attempt, before the whole thing came down again. It was part of what prompted Kristin to get this site going as quickly as she could.

Yup, it is an attack, no doubts about it.

I attempted to "log in" with a fake username/password combo, and it not only went through (gee, since when Microsoft is hosting their corporate e-mail with Google? And apparently Bill Gates' password is "ilovemoney"... gosh, got it right on the first try! I must be incredibly lucky!), but also asked for my phone number ("for confirmation"), which I proceeded to feed with a fake number (123-456789)... and then it asked me to "set up the means of payment" (which included PayPal and a few others I had never heard about)

The lack of any form of customization to make it seem even *remotely* related to Whateley suggests to me that this is an automated attack. It's simply too generic.

Curious, how are you even logging in? I just tried going to the old site and all I'm getting is still just a black page...

The temporary "under investigation" page that had been replacing the forums was removed by... whoever. Probably the hacker. And the old forums are still, AFAIK, unavailable.

But the root website, with the old story archive, is still there. Some of the pages are OK, some (like the main page and the 2nd generation page) have delayed redirects -- after 13 seconds they redirect into the fake login page.

Yeah, I checked it out myself and that sure seems to be the case. That's beyond frustrating.

I sure hope we have the canon stories backed up somewhere else just in case...

I spent a few minutes rooting out hackerish stuff. Bit of a pain in the rear since I have neither shell or root/admin access. As long as it stays relatively clean and doesn't hijack anyone... we really only need it there for people to feel like the stories are still immediately available while we transfer them in here. But we don't actually need the old site to do that... we have them all stored and ready to copy over elsewhere. I have html, Warren has html, Elrod has them all in DOC form, etc... so we could technically wipe the old server and just redirect the domain at any time. And we will... sooner than later if the hacker crap keeps up. We don't want anyone's email getting coopted just because we're being sentimental about the old site.

I have got a number of files from the 'Authors Corner' which do include chapters/posts of 'Canon' stories that were posted there during one of the access problem periods. While some of those posts were later re-posted in the proper format I still have several that apparently were not converted. These include 'Silver Linings Chapter 2 parts 2-7', among others.

Given that I save the web pages in .mht format, which can cause problems for some browsers, it might be more practical if I were to consolidate the separate posts into a single Microsoft Word file and then attach that to a post here, provided that the Canon Authors have no objections. This IS their work after all and I don't want to step on their toes.

I'll look for Canon permission before going ahead with this.

As I'm not sure how much formatting etc I may need to do in the conversion this may take a few days to complete.

If you can pass the unpublished stories to me I can at least do a straight conversion into this sites new publishing system. I can't publish it myself, but I can at least turn it into a few simple clicks for the Canon Authors to publish if they wish (save some work all round).

Yes, anyone who is a Fan Fic Author could help... any story imported over from the old site could be entered as if its fan fic... and its very minor steps to go from there. If you load the stories by copying the source (the html source), all you have to do is chop off everything at the top prior to the html for the heading of "A Whateley Academy Tale" and everything after the "End of Story" "To be Continued" or "Finis" (which mostly consists of the Google analytics script). Put that in your clipboard, then create content here, name it with the story name and toggle off the editor... then paste it into the text box... toggle back on the editor. It 'should' at that point be more or less the same as it was on the old site... some minor formating comes from CSS that'll be present once you save it. After that, it's just a little clean up work for someone before we toggle a publish button.

FanFiction can't do that for some reason, I toggle my editor settings between codeMirror (when I want the html) and JCM (when I want WYSIWYG). Change editor settings, re-edit the story, working for me

Weird. My test account set at fan fic author level CAN turn editor on and off with TinyMCE... but doesn't seem to have the ability with the other types. I don't know why that is.

I put a couple of stories up just to test and they seem to be working with my workaround, but there is a code issue, Kristin.

When I post a story it tries to take me to the URL whateleyacademy.net/http%3A%2F%2Fwhatele...user-article-manager

(Which obviously gives me a page not found error) Should be
whateleyacademy.net/index.php/user-article-manager

There is probably some line of settings you have set to " whateleyacademy.net/index.php/user-article-manager " where it probably only wants "index.php/user-article-manager"

Phoenix, there's no obvious setting for that as a follow through to submitting something. But there IS a direct link to the Article Manager that should be in your left sidebar menu

Its dropping me out of the site and into a browser "page does not exist" screen

When I click save, the page URL it is trying to take us to is whateleyacademy.net/http%3A%2F%2Fwhatele...user-article-manager , which is obviously wrong, I can hit the back button and then click on the link, sure fine, but somewhere in the site code whateleyacademy.net/http%3A%2F%2Fwhatele...user-article-manager needs to be changed to whateleyacademy.net/index.php/user-article-manager

Just FYI, not high priority or anything, but I doubt you'd find it if we didn't tell you about it

I know those characters aren't "garbage," although they are in a way. They certainly aren't what was intended, and I think I know what happened. The original I d/led from the old forum still has the correct characters, but the one I edited to pull out all the Forum coding doesn't.

most likely its either an elipsis or a front/end quote instead of a multipurpose quote

if you find one and do a find/replace all to turn an elipsis into ... and front/end quotes into just a normal " , it should solve the issue permanently for most if not all of them.

I have all the canon Whateley stories saved, including the ones which were only posted as forum messages... although, since I never planned on redistributing them, they are in a somewhat-edited form -- I applied my own styles, implemented "smart quotes", fixed a few obvious typos... so I hesitate on uploading them, unless:
a) Turns out that there is no "better" copy available, or
b) The author would like to see my version.

Regarding Silver Linings in particular... the original part numbering/breaks for that one is a bit of a mess, as it was posted to the forums in a bit of an ad-hoc way. Since all the existing links for the story are going to be broken ANYWAY, I hope Bek finds a few minutes in her busy schedule to tell us how she WANTED it to be. All a single big story? Two stories? Three? Which are supposed to be the names of those stories? What are supposed to be the breakpoints?

I have all the Canon stories from the Crystalhall . org, and Silver Linings from the forum, and Golden Angel from the Buck and Bonnie forum, all are in the original HTML format. What I put up for the Silver Linings from the forum has breaks for the different posts, unfortunately that has the aforementioned 'mischaracters.'

Brings up an interesting question, do we want these stories reposted 'as they were', or do we want to re-edit them (fix typos, re-do the dates and heading to match the currently posted stuff, etc.)?

I've done a quick and dirty copy/paste of a handful of early stories (Miyet 1, intro and Ninja 1), and I may follow up with Ninja 2 and the Merry series.

Like the other Fan Fic authors who are pitching in, I am hesitant to perform much editing beyond replacing HTML entities.

OK some gotchas I'm noticing.

if you put in a Kristin style html "break" and then just open the page in most of the WYSIWYG editors, they'll strip it back out (so all the breaks in Silver lining 2 part 2 have now turned into just double paragraph gaps). Do the html style 'breaks' lasts, after you've finished editing the pages, and save the page while showing html code.
copy paste from most word processors into the WYSIWYG editors is good for converting to HTML, but it also makes all sort of font and style code that should be stripped back out (so that the story looks the same as other stories on the site).
If you are not sure how to do this feel free to send me the html code and I'll do it for you (just copy paste the HTML into a plain text file and send it to me, PM me for my email address).
don't forget to use the "author alias" field to put in the real authors
here is sample html code you can copy past to the top of the story for the headers (don't forget to change the details)

Uh... isn't the "Geo Vignettes" story stamped with the wrong publication date? AFAIK, it was originally published on November 8, 2009 -- not November 20, 2015.

Hi first time poster!

Huge fan of the entire whateley series of stories (just finished reading all that are available on the new and old sites).

On the migration of old to new site I've noticed that the stories "I Looked into the Abyss, and it Winked" parts 5 and 6 are unavailable due to being on the forums. Are there backups of these?

Also on the new site's canon page will there be anything like the old site with the key characters listed in a column next to the story?

Regarding the "missing" parts of Abyss... yes, there are copies of that and every other story, for that matter. Even if by chance Kristin does not have a copy on hand, there are other options.
A few fans like myself are obsessive completists, and have personal copies of everything. And there are even a couple people who saved the forum pages. So it will eventually get uploaded in full.

Ya... I don't think there ever was canon versions of chap 5 and 6 of that story. The only versions in the forums were the fan fic and the author left before ever finishing solving all the continuity issues.

One of the main reasons I personally don't like trying to move fan fic into canon... the author spent all that time doing conversions instead of writing anything new and didn't even finish solving the continuity snarl, which leaves things a mess for everyone to deal with going forward. Sometimes it worth it to get a story into the canon ... but it really is a painful process. Even when the story is already close to continuity (right Sleethr?)

Hmm...do you have fanfic author status Malady? If not that's probably why you can't see anything there. Everything in that list is either still unpublished or only published at fanfic author or higher level, to allow for making edits before final publishing. Currently there are a selection of canon works waiting that some of the fanfic authors have been gracious enough to help transfer over from the old site, as well as a small selection of completed fanfiction that's being edited for official publication. The canon stories are only there temporarily, until either Kristin or one of the limited few others with publishing power can find the time to move them where they need to be.

Hope that helps to clear things up a bit.

OK, a couple clarifications because there were two different stories mentioned above in a not-entirely-clear manner:

1. "I Looked at the Abyss and it Winked" was originally posted as fanfic. Eventually it was moved into canon and posted in 10 parts (actually some 20% longer than the original fanfic). There was also an officially-posted beginning of a second "Abyss" story, but then Drunkfu disappeared. I guess she forgot to carry the 1...

2. "Silver Linings" was originally posted by Bek in the forums, during one of those periods the authors had problems uploading to the main site. Its chapter numbering is a bit confusing so I'm not sure what "part 5 and 6" may refer to, but it's all canon. During the recent forum crisis, Bek posted the first chapter of the next story in that series to one of the temporary forums, but it was pulled for the time being (probably a further round of tweaks). There is some hope by fans that this story will see the light around Christmas.

Well, does that make it more or less of a loss that they are active on their DA page but haven't logged in at crystal hall in more than a year. Diane has said she has more Ayla, too. Do you want to point out that writing at TtH means she hasn't disappeared too?

While updating the Wiki's List of Canon Stories, I noticed that there's a potential early candidate for the new "Published Fanfic" section - Brandy DeWinter's Dream Lover (originally published to the Library).

Then probably worth a tag / section of their own are the three author interviews and the five April Fool parodies (although if Dr. Bender's is transferred, it would probably need a large warning [Tennyo Goes To Hell style?] since it proved so contentious the link to it was removed [although the parody itself remained])

The big problem we face as authors is that, for example, Kayda is on the same floor as Ayla. Interactions with Ayla are inevitable. So we have a choice - drop the character from interactions other than 'hi' in the hallways, or basically take a hint that a year's sabbatical means Diane isn't really interested in Ayla and use him as a semi-foreground character. As prominent as Ayla is, it'd be unlikely that he'd be in the background.

So in my view, by not writing any Ayla for over a year, Diane has tacitly given us permission to move forward and it MIGHT mess up any story ideas she might have had if she returns; she'll have to adjust story ideas to what has happened on campus. Certainly the timeline has moved significantly forward, so .... Yeah. we're pressing.

Problems of the import system, Valentine and I were working through the imports using different priorities (me chronologically, Valentine pulling in complete story arcs) and we both got to Jade 4 at the same time and imported it, accidentally using slightly different names so we didn't notice, and once in we can't delete them.

I've PMed Kristin to hopefully sort it out.

Might I suggest that a thread or mail communication be set up so that everyone can be on the same page on importing stuff? Bob and I ran into a similar issue with Sapphire when we offered to update the whateley stories on her site. She wouldn't bother to download the current update from the site before updating it thus overwriting all our work. It was one of the reasons we moved the site to Bob's servers. So we had more control over the stories.

The Joomla CMS system is making it much easier to update on the fly. Because it's just a matter of changing a few article settings to get stories in their rightful places.

The Jade stories will be a bit of a trial for you because Babs was in high gear for a while cranking out stories. Renae was like that to for a while.

The fan fic authors are making a good pace on things. I'd recommend individual people try to stick to one author at a time ... that'll avoid overlapping efforts. For example, Valentine is working on Diane's stuff. No one else should transfer over anything by Diane ... unless Valentine says he's hit a wall and needs a break for someone else to take over.

Mainly, when fan fic authors are converting, they need to do one of two things... either do ALL the edits in the first run at it (so when they save it, I can publish it straight to the canon list) or, they need it published and set with viewing access at Jr Editor (which currently has to be done by either me or Warren). This sets it up so the posting author can edit it ... (only publishers can change the 'state' of an article from unpublished to published... but they're also the only ones that can 'see' an unpublished article - which is the state things are in when you first create and save the thing).

There's a bunch of old stories in the Canon section... with recent dates (as opposed to the original publication dates, as had been the norm for the other older stories previously published).

Can we start linking to them from the Wiki or is there a chance the links will be broken if/when the dates are fixed?

Man, I'm loving that AutoWikiBrowser bot... there's all sorts of taks that it takes care in minutes.

Case in point: I thought that it would be useful to keep track of the stories that haven't been migrated to the new site yet (or at least, the ones that haven't their corresponding Wiki pages updated). So I created a new subcategory called "Unmigrated" in the wiki, and used the bot to tag all pages belonging to the "category:stories" but which did NOT include the string " whateleyacademy.net ". Took me about five minutes.

So there you have it: a list of all the stories which still need migrating. We are well over 50% done -- there are 202 stories total, but only 91 remaining to be migrated. And most of the really big ones (*coff*Diane*coff*) have already been done, while I noticed a lot of small teasers and vignettes in the "to-do" list. So it's mostly downhill now.

It's worse than that -- my archived version has ten parts, not six. Apparently we never got the sub-entries for the later parts into the wiki...

Anyway, I could send you my copy, but I'm not the best source -- I tend to edit my reading copies somewhat, and without author approval of my edits, well... call my archives the "last resort" if you can't find any other source. OTOH, my personal archive is (AFAIK) really complete, including all images and stuff.

I'm running through the "unmigrated" category at the Wiki to update pages, and I noticed a few problems in recently uploaded stories:

1. "Being Merry In Spite Of It All" is actually a three-part story, but only the third part is listed on the Canon Stories page -- and it is listed as the full story, not as "Part C". And yes, I checked if it hadn't been compiled into a single file. It hasn't. So I'm not taking that one out from the "unmigrated" category for the time being.

2. The chapters for "Straight from the Squirrel's Mouth" are titled somewhat confusingly. It goes all right up to Chapter 4... but then, there are two copies of Chapter 5 -- one of which has a filename that suggests "Chapter 6". From that onwards, the pattern repeats: Chapter "n" has a filename of "n+1". And Chapter 6 has a posting date somehow *after* Chapter 11. I think I'll wait until this gets straightened out to update the links for the later chapters. And yes, it will remain in the "unmigrated" category for the time being.

I went to attempt updating the "Abyss" wiki entry. In the process, I ran into a bunch of issues... issues that I'm pretty sure are NOT new, but are there since the original posting.

Simply stated, the chapter numbering is a mess. It only makes sense if... well, if you use Mythos math, I think.

The first file is described as "Part 1", but it contains sections headed "Part 1" and "Part 2". OK, I guess.
The second file is described as "Part 2", but it contains sections headed "Part 2 and "Part 4." Hey, wait a minute...
The third file is described as "Part 3-6", but it contains sections headed "Part 3" and "Part 6." Now this is just wrong.
Fourth file restores sanity: it's described as "Part 7 & 8" and, guess what, it contains sections headed "Part 7" and "Part 8"
Fifth file is "Part 9" and contains "Part 9"
Sixth file is "Part 10" and contains "Part 10.

So... my guess is that Part 3 and Part 5 got misnumbered as Part 2 and Part 3 respectively. If you change back those to Part 3 and Part 5, it all falls in place.

But Drunkfu is not here to give his OK, so... I guess that we can't really change that in the canon files.

But I'm more than halfway tempted to adopt my revised numbering for the Wiki, and note on the story's page how it correspond to the canon misnumbering. That way, readers only have to make two small corrections to their own reading copies. What do you think?

(If that works, I may bug Bek to let me do the same to "Silver Linings...")

Now, they obviously can't be both right (although I'm pretty sure that that 2013 data is wrong), so I had to check some other source for data. I looked at the old site. Well, it's not loading for me right now, but I got the January 2012 from the Wayback Machine ( web.archive.org/web/20120105074917/http://www.crystalhall.org/ ) and it seems to confirm the wiki dates.

Well, I just went through the "unmigrated" list at the wiki and it's down to 70 stories now. That still includes stories that are already in the "Posted for Review" area, so there's about a half-dozen which are near to done too.

But there are three stories which are in the "Canon" list which still have problems, to wit:
- Being Merry In Spite Of It All - still missing parts A and B
- Petra 1 - only part 7 available
- Straight from the Squirrel's Mouth - it's technically complete, but still messed up (two parts 5, URLs don't match the contents...) so I'm waiting for definitive URLs before taking it off the "unmigrated" list.

Ah yeah, this is something the Canon Cabal need to fix, Valentine and I loose edit access once Kristin sets the metadata and permissions for the story to be in the Canon stories section.

Someone with edit access (hello cabal?) just needs to go through and renumber the titles of the stories correctly.

adding new tags really has to be done using the admin interface. the ones added on the fly take as much time to fix as it would take to enter them properly using it.

also, its important to note that external narrative perspectives - 3rd person, mostly... are not point of view perspective. For instance... a shift to focus on Captain Tilley, the Anti-Paladin, Nightgaunt, etc... might focus the camera/scene on them... but it doesn't give us insight into their emotions, thoughts, plans or history.

A 'point of view' character is someone who the reader will know better than anyone around them.

For example, with Ayla... if he were a focus character but we only saw him from the external view; we might be very aware that he sets high standards for what he eats. We might work out that he has a sensitive palette and an appreciation for good foods. And its clear that he has the money to arrange for the higher quality stuff to be made available to him despite what's available to other students.

What we only get when we look into the story from his perspective is just how much the quality of his food matters to him. It isn't a matter of attitude or social status, he simply enjoys the right combination of textures and flavors and has both the ability and experience necessary to discern them... which makes eating normal food much like what eating 10 for a $1 ramen noodles, mcdonalds, or MRE's is to most of the rest of us. we know it will sustain us, but we don't willingly subject ourselves to those things without a reason.

and he enjoys the exchanges with the chefs, challenging his awareness of his food and challenging THEM to keep their own standards up despite the temptations to give in to cutting corners to serve people who don't notice. In fact, that same attitude of noblesse oblige and patronage that runs through his interactions with the chefs is seen in many of his other interactions at the school.

And you don't see those things from the external perspective. That's the difference between a PoV character and a Supporting one.

I have been for close to two decades downloading, archiving, and editing stories from the internet. So I have lots of practice with copying and pasting.

I still have to go back and change all of those to "Staff Review."

I'm curious as to what your process is?

I have all the HTML files saved as .rtf. So I am just opening the .rtf file, stripping out the beginning, and the ending, and copying and pasting. Then adding in the title and stuff under the Publishing tab.

Renae put a link to a Smilie in all the Petra stories and that link is dead now. Grrrrrr.

Smile is in src="images/<same name.jpg>" I already copied it over to the server

My process is open in TextEdit
- strip headers and footers
- clean up the html using find replace
- swap the HR stuff for ones from the new server
- clean up any images
- remove excess white space
- post, publish and move to staff review section
- give it a once over to make sure nothing's wrong

Valentine isn't cleaning them up anywhere near as much as you are, that's why he's faster on a per title basis. Although I'm less worried about the clean up stuff atm. Some of the other canon can do some of the format cleanup over time either on their own stuff or on the stuff for the retired authors as needed. Now that they 'can', anyway. Used to be once the stuff was in html, that was basically the endof it because it was too much hassle to make edits and then plug in the html file again. Someone always saved or copied wrong and messed up the code or something.

<shrug> In all honesty who's going to bother going through nearly 400 story parts to edit them again?

I have the file open I might as well clean up as I go.

Oh fair warning for any would be editors: some of the sites editing choices (especially the WYSIWYG ones) strip out html code added manually.

Don't open Petra part seven (the one with a movie) unless you want to have to PM Kristin to put it back for you, oh and most of them will rip out the swirly section breaks.

Just hard won experience playing with the editors a lot :cry:

Careful not to overdo the simultaneous open files thing by tooo much. You're scaring our poor baby server into outright quivers. (First time we've peaked server ops over 50% since I upgraded us off the free test server... well, okay, it was only 47.8%... but it was close. A whole 1500 disk i/o operations per second.

And the SQL server spat out a pile of error messages at me. Which is more important than the actual virtual hardware variety server. A little less efficiency needed, I suppose.

I'm currently collating the stories that have been transferred since my last edit of the List of Canon Stories and have noticed a few oddities, which someone may possibly feel motivated to take a look at sometime...

1) We seem to have ended up with two copies of Merry 3 (Against Ill Chances)...

376-merry-3-against-ill-chances
395-against-ill-chances

2) The publish dates for Merry 6 seem suspicious...

Merry 6a: 12 July 2007 (FanWiki currently claims 2006-06-07 - did you mean 12th July 2006?)
Merry 6b: 3 October 2006 (correct according to FanWiki)

3) A handful of stories have had their titles rendered IN CAPITALS...

4) Boston Brawl II has been transferred, but Boston Brawl I is still pending.

I know it seems like we are not listening to this, but we are, it's just we've decided that we want to finish transferring the stories, and then we'll get a complete list of all the oddities and fix them as a single project.

So, after we finish I'll start a new thread and invite comments on things people have notice need fixing, and then sort out the problems into,seperate list according to who needs to fix them. Dates are a Kirstin / Warren only thing. Missing stories Valentine and I can resolve, most other things (like inconsistent titles, spelling corrections, typos, etc.) can be resolved by members of the core canon editing team.

Please, unless it's a title missing from an author we've stated we have finished migrating, please wait until I start the new thread for the other stuff.

If the author put the title in all caps, I put the title in all caps. I did very little to change how the original author presented their story.

So far I haven't noticed Tennyo 4: It's Nice To Have Friends in the migrated list - so either it's been forgotten (awww!) or has a significantly different publish date...

I'll let you know if any others are missing (or have significant date discripancies) later on, once I've gone through and updated the entire Wiki List of Canon Stories (I'm currently updating an offline copy before copying / pasting into the page, as the table's grown to the extent where editing online is vveerryy ssllooww).

Funnily enough, in the process of loading the migrated stories to grab an updated word count (since between when I grabbed the word count on CH and now, I've tweaked the algorithm), I've frequently been side-tracked into reading them...
...which may explain why the Wiki's multiple dozens of stories behind

Well, it has been said that the canon migration is finished... but either I'm older and more absent-minded than I thought, or that's not quite true.

A look at the Category:Unmigrated page at the wiki still shows ten entries. Granted, one of them (Straight from the Squirrel's Mouth) is there just as a reminder to update the page when the file-title-mismatch is fixed... and three of them (Fey: Learning Curve, Heyoka 3: Survival Class and Wild Times) refer to teasers which we are still waiting on Kristin's ruling how to proceed.

But the other six are regular canon stories that I was unable to find either in the appropriate section or in the "to be reviewed" queue. Those are:

*Tennyo's Easter
*The Power of Cute Compels You!
*There's Something About Billie
*To Know Your Heart

If those were migrated, please point my aging eyes to their location.

That way we only need to look in one place for a compiled list of issues we can work our way through.

By my count, once we get everything cleaned up, there will be 402 posts in the Whateley "Original Canon" section for a single year at Whateley (not counting posts yet to be revealed by the authors).

I'm sure someone will have all the stats and such, but wow, that's some legacy!
