  • One of the main gripes I have with the story listings is the impossibility of scrolling through the densely packed and sometimes character-ambiguous story titles in reverse order to find the next story in a arc. With the original timeline, there are 17 pages of stories, many with titles that are inconspicuous as to character and general importance. Ok, let me give you a example. It took me two weeks to find the first Imp story, and it took a whole month to track down the second fling story. So, without further griping, let me suggest a few courses of action:

    - A character index containing lists of the stories for each character in order, seperate to the story listings in 'Original Timeline' and 'Second Gen Canon'. This would allow quicker searching for older stories, and also be a much easier way of getting into Whateley. You could possibly also list the stories that are vital for understanding the 'main story' to use a inaccurate term, and seperate these from the 'side stories' which you read for understanding characters or having a better understanding of the universe.

    - A tag list in the listings already present. Currently, each story has a date published, author, hits, votes and rating column. Cut the votes or rating out, and add a list of tags for each story. This would mean that for stories such as 'A Simple Game' (which was innocuous as to character when I first read it when I first joined this site) or 'A little R&R' would have the character listed so that you can tell what you're reading, and therefore what character is the PoV. This would help drastically for new readers, or people trying to read through 17 pages of 30 stories to find a few stories.

    - Make the story rows larger, and add more information, and maybe a synopsis. This would be a much easier method of getting what a story is about. It would also increase readability.

    - Update the tags so that it includes every story belonging to the tags. At the moment, the tag system is woefully inadequate, and lacking many stories for specific characters or authors.

  • That??? Oh, OK. I meant ON the site, but that'll do. The only problem is finding the bleeders in the mammothian listings.

  • I've taken to selecting the max value and resorting by date... 100 stories to a page is only 6 pages and by reversing the order it makes it a bit easier.

What I would like would be for the site to hold that sort order for me under my log-in (yeah that would mean a cookie). I'm someone who will read in bed and go to sleep while doing so :) which means that the next day, when I wake my machine up and finish the story, the sort order has reverted to 30/latest first when I hit back.

One thing that was on the old site (can't remember if it was on the site or the forums) was a chart that grouped the stories by time they occurred, so you'd pull up Fall 2006 and see something like.

    Sept Oct Nov Dec
    |--Ayla & Bmler --|
    |--Call Thund --|
    |
    Merry
    |

(not that the above is in any way accurate ;) )

edit: Aaaaand... the forum ignores all spacing :P

  • I believe the wiki maintainers are working on getting the newer stories listed so you can find them by date. However, the job has the usual problem of more man-hours of work than there are people interested in working on it without interjecting outside stuff.

    Forum-posted ideas are freely adoptable.

  • Tags are great. Tracking stories by Protagonist character is a great idea.

Unfortunately, with the way the software is set up and the way I originally built the security to allow authors (both canon and non) to work in the front end instead of a separate administrative site (which means only admin logs into the admin site which makes things far more secure and means I don't have to spend weeks or longer vetting each new applicant who wants to write), the built in tag system was inaccessible to anyone but me and Warren. More recently, I found an extension that allowed me to add an independent tagging system and extra data fields to content... at that time we started tagging everything with three types of info 1. Protagonist name, 2. Point in timeline (Gen 1, Yr 1 Fall.... Gen 2, Yr 3 Fall, etc) and 3. Story Arc... so any story related to GEO, for instance, could be tagged as part of that arc... or anything relating to Wondercute, etc).

The good part is, these tags are usable to search for things. The bad part is, only staff can enter them. Dan, Phoenix and I enter tags when we can... but there are a LOT of stories. You think it sucks trying to find one when you're looking to read something? Try going through every single one and entering all the relevant tag data. So recent stories, added since we started tagging? Yep, most of them are referenced. Older stuff? We'll get to it when we get to it. When I put in the tags system, I also added fields for Protagonist name and for in-universe start dates. You CAN access stories with that info now, in the search engine... but it would be more useful when all the stories have the data. It will be even MORE useful when I eventually have the time to finish developing the calendar system, which will give you two separate ways to look at a calendar... one showing stories on a calendar of the past 14 years when entries where each story was released... and one showing an in-universe timeline with entries on a calendar where each story begins. Ideally, we could break that down even further by using ALL the timestamps that appear in stories (and a Google map using the geological position part of scene heading entries)... but that's a data entry issue (takes time) that can't even start until the code has to exist factor which is a Kristin bottleneck. :)

You're actually not recommending anything we aren't aware of or that isn't in progress... but you also have to understand that everything takes time to do. And while it is possible to reduce the bottleneck and let more people help accomplish the work, more people accessing systems also makes them more vulnerable. As much as I'd love to populate data systems to make everything easier to use 'overnight' ... the last thing we need to do is open up data entry to the point where someone takes advantage of us and destroys what we have now.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

  • To give you a better idea of our progress, there is 78 pages worth of story listings (using the Read Stories list I use because it shows the tags and lets me know where I’m at), and taking into account stories tagged since we got the new system and stories we’ve gone back and tagged since, we’ve made it back to the 16th page, which is around the release of the fourth Imp story.

Anything released past that is tagged, anything released before that is only tagged if it was part of a set we tagged (i.e. some of the Authors with smaller libraries of stories had all their stories tagged at once).

  • We also have the Recommended Reading Orders, though I sort of lost steam on those after the first three. I've been meaning to make lists for specific characters, and in some cases, for story arcs (e.g., all the stories related to the Halloween Invasion), but I never got around to it. If anyone wants to make additional ones, or just keep nudging me to get back to it, feel free.

  • I've put together some lists of the shorter stories. The lists should be posted under the heading of Anne's lists here in the forum. I haven't put one together in a while, and they aren't necessarily in any order except according to the story itself. Thus I think I did one for The Canto of Sapho, but may not have done any for any other stories, I think I did To Bottle a Jinn as well... but it has been a while... Long enough that I'd have to search my own topics to find it and I'm sort of vociferous...
