  • Just looked for Absinthe 2 in my favs. Those are about 5 parts that are all over the place in that list spread across two pages because they were released so far apart. I would like to have one site for the story and on this site all the parts are listed so in my favourites there aren't 40 parts but ten stories. This would make navigating the stories, especially old ones, so much easier and more comfortable.
    Like bigcloset does it:
    bigclosetr.us/topshelf/book/52640/among-val-kyr
Also a next and previous part hyperlink at the bottom of each part would be lovely, again as Bigcloset does it.

  • One of the problems with grouping the story parts is that many of the multi-part stories are intercalated much like a crossover between comic book series. Bypassing the other related books is more likely to leave a reader feeling cheated (Or is that the bitterness of long-time X-men fan coming through?) which is a good argument against recombining stories like a trade paperback after all the parts are released.

Kristin has explained a number of times that the software than makes the forum and the write/edit/release process for stories work treats each separate piece as a standalone article instead of files in a purpose-built directory structure ( http://server/site/medium/author/story per your example, and that might be an artifact of RESTful coding ). Traversing an arbitrary list of entries may look trivial to a user; that doesn't make it trivial to code.

The wiki entries for most stories include pointers to each part. XaltatunOfAcheron, Malady, and Sir Lee have put a massive amount of time and effort into making it useful.

First/Previous/Next/Last navigation within a multiparter can be done. Manually. In HTML. By someone with Edit permissions on the documents. For a series in progress, that requires multiple edits to avoid handing readers a non-working link (a big no-no as far as usability is concerned), and each edit is an opportunity to screw something up.

  • Perhaps someone (aside from me) could add character-specific link pages to the Recommended Reading Order section?

Speaking of which, I might add more to that myself, later, but I am not really up to it at the moment.

  • I will point out the same thing that I do EVERY time someone suggests that the SITE include links, connections between stories, different reading orders, and so forth.... you create it, and I will post it.

In some three years of the site being up in Joomla, you know how many people have taken the time and effort to create even a small reading order? Just Schol-R-LEA. :P

As a side note... had you considered that the 'easier' way to get any story in order is to look at the ordered collection and 'limit' it to one author's works. There MAY be years between part 1 and part 2 of a given story with hundreds of other stories in between due to their release dates... but very very few cases is there a story where an author is writing a dozen different things before cycling back to the next part on something written ages ago. There might be a 'few' things, like where someone has written a story in Gen 1 then one in Gen 2 and then a stand alone, before getting back to the part 2 of the Gen 1 story... but those will all be on the same page of the list and easy enough to find.

    Know how do to this?

Main Menu Click on "Read Stories"
Left sidebar Menu Click on "Original Timeline"
In the center, below Original Timeline and Original Canon there is text entry box labeled Author Filter.... type "Morpheus" without the quotes.
If you have the number of stories set on the default 30... you 'should' be able to see ALL Absinthe stories on page 1of the list... in fact, the first Absinthe as of this moment, is the story at the bottom of Page 1.

This gets significantly easier with authors who haven't written as much in both generations as Morpheus.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

  • Since I'm mostly concerned with the Wiki, may I suggest that if you want to follow a specific character, the character's page on the Wiki should get you to the individual story pages, which in turn will get you to the stories. These are, unfortunately, incomplete at the present time. A search on the character's code name is more likely to get you a usable list, although it won't be in order. The sortable story indexes are also there for a reason.

These are, unfortunately, incomplete at the present time. Given my current rate of progress, I suspect that they won't be complete until the middle or end of 2020, which may be more than the time I have left in this life.

Kristen's suggestion about using an author name filter is very useful. I've used it, and it saves a huge amount of searching.

This is the first time I've looked at the recommended reading orders. I note that there's nothing about Gen 2. I may get to it, but no promises.

  • Also, learn the WhatLinksHere pages.

They're basically 100% sure to lead to stories about the character in question.

What Reading Orders do we recommend beyond "Release"?

That's what the timeline pages on the Wiki are for. If you find an interesting story, the Wiki story page will give you links to the timeline pages; the timeline pages will tell you what other stories happened at the same time and give a good guess at what order things happened in.

It's a tool available to logged-in wikia users, down at the bottom of the page frame by default.
If you already have it, click "My Tools", and "What links here" should be one of the options.
