  • I may be way out of touch here but it seems that it has been forever since we have had any story entries from cannon authors such JG, Elrod(Kayda) and some of the others. Is there something I have missed, or have these writers gone AWAL ?

I have enjoyed quite a few of the New Cannon Aurthors such as Morpheus and a couple of others. I would appreciate any knowledge any update/help in this.

    Thank you

  • It's a tough situation, really. One of the best encouragements for getting the authors to write is for people to be reading their stories and commenting, talking about, and looking forward to more. But its far easier and faster to read stories than it is to write them. And readers who aren't getting enough new material to read will wander among various places to acquire that new material. In doing so, they split up their attention among various web sites and leave individual authors feeling less appreciated. Numbers of feedback and praise drop, the story read/hit counters accumulate slower, and authors begin to feel like they're doing something wrong... that no one likes their stories anymore. A quick burst of endorphins when they release something new no longer holds them over through the long working stages of preparing the next bit.

  • So I am taking from your response Kristin is that they have just stopped writing. I know both of the authors that I mentioned got quite a bit of feedback on their stories. I have read or at least I think I have read something that a few of those original cannon authors were writing but some of the others werent or werent writing I guess the term would be fast enough or keeping up wiht the story plots so the stories have come to a true slow down. I thought one of the reasons why the site organizers were looking for new cannon authors were that they would looking for authors to take over some of those characters maybe bring a couple of new characters with them as well but not just have the original characters just get dropped. Some of these new authors are very good and I mentioned Morpheus in my first post as I truly believe he is a pure talent. But JG and outcast corner, Elrod and Kayda(with her cast of assemble) and Team Kimba are the bread and butter of this site. I hope I am not being told that Those authors are no longer writing? Is that the case?

  • The good news is that we do have a story from JG coming soon as announced in this thread New Outcast Story and we recently got a new story from Branwen who used to write under the Dr Bender name previously. Dissonance (Part 1)

As well, I've seen no less than 3 older authors working away at stories recently so you WILL still see more out of our older authors... It's just been taking some time.

  • And while we do have agreements with some of the newer authors to keep their characters an active part of the universe if for some reason they (they authors) go inactive. But with many of the older authors/characters, that agreement wasn't in place. So while we can cameo them or maybe do some 'minor' bits with them in supporting roles; we are limited in how much we can do without breaking our early copyright agreements. One of many things that makes a long running shared universe complicated.

  • I'm currently working on a non-Whateley serial story that has been taking a bit longer than expected. Once I'm done with my current project, I'll be back.

    Charge of the Light Vignettes
Murphy's Laws of Spirit (Part One)
Knockoff 2 - Fight or Flight (part 1)

  • I appreciate you providing that list nullOtrooper, but none of that work has been with the First Gen Original storylines that he has brought to the site correct?

There's not much Kayda in there, if that's what you're trying to ask, but everything on that list except Laura is First Gen.

  • I mean you have me and Fiddler bringing in completely new characters to Whately! We're both from the same state as Morpheus so there's definite cross-over in our stories from the get-go.

  • Very much a fan of Elrod, but I was specifically asking about the continuation of the original characters of the first gen series.

ShadowedSin may I ask what you mean when you say you and Fiddler are from the same state as Morpheus?

  • OK, this is a strictly UNofficial listing, based SOLELY on stuff I read around the forums. I have NO SPECIAL BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE.

Babs -> Disappeared from the Web, people are concerned about her health.
Bender -> After a long time away for personal reasons, has recently come back with a new name: Branwen. We hope she has more on her queue.
Bek -> can still be seen around the forums now and then, not writing much lately. Hope situation changes.
Diane -> Burned out on Whateley after a period in which she was both the most active author and sysadmin. Still active as a writer with her own universe over at Twisting the Hellmouth, when asked she says she would like to return to Whateley but her muse is not helping.
Drunkfu -> Left Whateley but can still be seen around the Web. No word on whether a return is a possibility.
E.E. Nalley -> Has been fairly active in recent years, although not so much in recent months. Probably has something brewing.
ElrodW -> Took some time off due to personal/health reasons. Promises to come back Any Day Now (tm).
Hart - Left a long time ago.
Heather -> Bowed out due to health issues. Pops up in the forums now and then, but has not mentioned any intention of resuming writing.
J.G. -> Has been on-again, off-again for a number of years. Recently declared that a story is near publication.
Kristin -> Constant presence in the forums, Webmistress, writes when she finds the time, which is not often.
Liliandra -> Disappeared early on, on the military at a time of war so... your guess is good as mine.
Maggie -> Got burned out with Whateley after one too many abusive reviews. Still writes stuff occasionally in other sites.
Morpheus -> Currently busy with a really long non-Whateley story, should come back when it's finished.
Motley -> Long time no see.
Renae -> Left for health reasons, if memory serves well.
ScramblerJ -> First canon author to leave, drops in the forums once every Jupiter orbit or so.
Starwolf - Not seen around here in a while, but there's a Starwolf who keeps showing up in Diane's comment threads over at TTH who's likely to be the same, so there's hope.
Tensai - Left before finishing the first story. I don't really have much hope for a return.
Warren - Keeping pretty quiet, but apparently still giving Kristin a hand with site stuff, so not writing, but not completely divorced from Whateley.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Actually Sir lee Bek is quite busy, but hes mainly writing stories set in the Whateleyverse but not at Whateley.

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

As in we all live in roughly the same area of the country, and our PoV characters and a lot of their support are all coming from the area in which we are familiar :) So... there's a lot of PoV and Support Character crossover because we're all from the same region.

"Uh-oh." "Don't tell me - we're about to go over a huge waterfall." "Yup." "Sharp rocks at the bottom?" "Most likely." "Bring it on."

  • I appreciate each writer’s that post their hard work on this site. I truly wish I had this talent. The reason I asked this question initially was to find out if the original cannon authors were still posting their original characters. I appreciate the responses and wish you each great success.

    Thanks again

I might have expressed myself poorly. Bek has been active, yes, averaging about a bit over one full story per year -- "The Nefarious Three" in 2019, "Evil Genius" in 2018, "Loose Cannons 2" in 2017, the occasional Silver Ghost chapter around Christmas (not in 2017 or 2019, though) and a few Micro-Scenes. That' fine, but I guess I have been spoiled by her Morpheus-like productivity back in the Oughts and miss those times.

Anyway... bets on the 2020 Bek story? Loose Cannons 3? The Mark of Miss Scarlet? More Silver Ghost? More Jadis?

  • I'll add this comment: Years ago I read a book of short stories by Louis L'Amour: In his commentary on one of the stories about mining for gold, he said that it was much easier writing about mining for gold than actually doing it.

I'll add this: it is easier to read about mining for gold than to write about mining for gold.

Thus as a fan who reads, you have the least difficult task... er you're being entertained while someone like me is trying to pick out the right words and maintain their voice, etc, etc.
