  • I've gotten two warnings now saying I've logged in too much and my account at risk of being disabled.
I'm using my iPad, so often when I come back after going away for a bit it reloads. Any idea of how to fix this problem?

  • I'm getting the same problem on my laptop. Gotten a total of six emails so far. The scary part for me is that it's talking about the Whateley ADMIN site, so now I'm freaking out that the hacker is back and trying to use my account.

  • I have 'not' received any and I've been off and on numerous times.

First thing first I would offer the suggestion of changing the passwords immediately as a precaution as if it is a hackers attempt its possibly due to them having your login name and is trying to force-brute the password.

I don't think admin has it where the account becomes disabled after so many numerous tries.

  • I have the issue too, but I feel like it might just be the "remember my password" feature fetching new credentials everytime you return to the site?

  • I got this email as well.

I was using both my laptop and my phone, but I haven't gotten a second email after switching to only my laptop. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one.

  • Apparently, its linked to tabs. Close the last Whateleyacademy.net tab? The System treats it like you logged off?

Open a Whateleyacademy.net tab after that? System thinks you've re-logged on, even though you clicked Remember Me.

That's how you rack up login count, apparently.

I sent a PM to Kristin about it, before I noticed this thread.

  • Could your internet connection resetting be a possible cause? Each time it's happened to me so far has been when I've had to put my laptop in sleep mode to move somewhere else on campus. When I open it back up and it reconnects to the wifi, sure enough I'll have a couple of notifications in my email about logins.

At least that's what it seems like for me.

Dreamer, that's exactly what I've been doing as well. I have no idea what the problem could be. Kristin seems to think it's tabs counting as separate logins, but I've only used 1 tab all day (except for one brief 2 minute window where I had two tabs, but that didn't seem to trigger a login either).

  • Sorry about the silliness. We're working with some new security software and its counting a lot more things as login's than I anticipated so my initial settings were a bit overzealous. Although, having 20 tabs open... that may be problematic no matter how we look at it. One of the main things I didn't anticipate was that every site visit seems to trigger 'two' logins for the purpose of this security software. I'm not entirely sure why... but that alone means I needed to at least double my expected 'allowable' connects.

The is 'mainly' to get some security logging. Necessary about all the problems last month. We actually caught someone trying to get into the admin side of things last night right after we installed the plug in. So, there's some IP's in Belarus that are blocked now. And one in St Petersburg (Russia, not FL). After all... we KNOW all the people who are supposed to have access to the admin site and we know where they live. So those are no brainer bans.

BUT... if for some reason, while we're still fine tuning things with the security software you DO happen to get locked out/banned (Dom); just shoot me an email and I'll get you unblocked soonish. Worst case, you might be blocked for a day or two before someone takes care of it... but at least this way, we'll all have a much more secure bit of web site to hang out on.

But seriously; glad your efforts are keeping up on those that want to bring this site down.

  • Clearly I will need to change my behavior with respect to this site, as I usually (on most sites that I have to log in to) am careful to log out completely when I stop using it. I do question why it is indicating me as using an admin login since I just anticipated access to my profile and the forums.

  • And another email after I came back again, it seems to happen if you don't simply stay on the forum and do something like make it go to your home page, Yahoo for me, and then backpage to come back to the forum later. Guess I will stay on here from now on and just mark myself as away, except for when I shut my computer down for the day.

  • I've yet to receive one e-mail, but I do have a tendency to leave the canon site open on a story as I read, as well as checking the forum. I use the refresh a lot to verify its current. So for all practical purposes the site might be viewing me as logged in with the story page open.

  • Got an e-mail when I got home tonight. Was logged on at home, moved to work, went to a different building at work (minor disconnect and probably IP address change), and then came home - so it may be looking at all those IP address changes as logins.

  • I've gotten them too because of how we approve registrations. BUT, the reason behind it is we have a few tools in place to track back hackers. (and we have already had a couple of attempts to get into the admin area) Kristin and I are in regular communication to keep each other in the loop. I'm not going to say much about them because that would just feed the attempts. When talking about your defense, vague is good. Saying nothing at all is better.

Kirsten has been working on getting enough logins to allow us to participate, but not unlimited logins daily for each person to interfere with attempts to destroy the site.

  • I haven't seen a warning that anyone is getting close to a temporary ban since the last adjustment. Those security features are mainly there to deter people who might try brute force methods of defeating the login system by trying many different login/password combinations. The people who are hit the hardest are those with 'shared' bandwidth or who are connecting via wi-fi while on the move because these people are disconnecting and reconnecting regularly by nature of their link to the network, even resulting in multiple different IP addresses over the period of one 'use' of the site. But 'most' peoples' regular use of the site should fall within the current limitations. If not, please let me know and maybe we can work out an exception or another way of verifying security for that person's account.

  • For what it's worth, I've never gotten any of these warnings. I *have* discovered I'd been logged out after being busy with other things in other tabs in the browser or other windows on the computer. But that seems to have reduced a lot too. Used to do it after an hour or so, now it's something more than 3-4 hours.

I have the site open in a "pinned" tab in firefox. And I'm using a wired connection to my router and from the router to the cable modem.

So m,y IP address at the modem changes once in a *long* while. the internal IP address doesn't often either (it wouldn't change at all but my good router died and the one I'm currently using won't let me assigned fixed IPs based on MAC address.)

And the computer is on 24/7 unless it crashes. Browser only closes for updates and for the times when it gets to be hogging memory too much.

So, I'm probably an outlier in the other direction.

Sorry for the verbosity, but I figured the details might be of help to Kristin.

  • Hmm. The only real concern I have is that we get warnings and lock out people who try to brute force account access. As long as we limit number of attempts within a period of time, we do that. And we want to do it unobtrusively... and that's where the adjustment phase came into play. Setting those number high enough that people using the system normally only rarely trigger the warnings but not much higher than that.

  • I did receive my first a few days ago. I kinda did it on purpose. I use firefox and had the site pinned open as I read a story. As with the other I have it hardwired. I'm under the impression that its that some users close out the connection and then reestablish also. It did take it awhile to give me that first notice.

  • Help! I, too, have gotten the "you have logged on too many times" e-mail. It is very scary because I don't want to be not allowed to visit this site. It would kind of break my heart if I was booted. I will try to visit the site less! I swear I am not a hacker or anything and don't have any mean intentions towards the Crystal Hall. I tried replying to the e-mails (I got two of them!) but when I did I was visited by the Mailer Demon. I suffered greatly when the old site was down for so long. Please don't kick me off! I am so not a hacker that I do not even understand the connection between visiting the site several times in a day and hacking it. :(

  • The point from which you get the first warning and the point to which the automated suspension system goes into place is slightly variable... however, if you get through at least half of your day's use of the site before getting the warning; you should be fine. Even if you DO get locked out, none of the automated bans are long. They just shut you out until an admin has time to look at it. If what you are doing IS trying to break into the site or just break the site, it should be fairly obvious to us and we'll add your name to the shoot to kill list... but a regular user who just happens to trip up the automated systems will just get restored to access and we'll monitor things in your area a bit more closely for a while.

I'd take her at her word for that stranger. I've been on her shoot to kill list since the day I got here. But I just keep on running.
