  • For anyone looking for other Superhero ficiton I highly recommend Velveteen . The first couple of stories are very light and zany, but things get darker as her backstory and the nature of her world is explored in more detail.

Velveteen's power is to animate toys. As an added bonus the toys she animates automatically aquire weapons that fit the toys concept, so toy soldiers have working guns and teddy bears have teeth and claws. One of the later stories mentions that she awakens two thousand seven hundred and eight toys at once, and she is not anywhere near full strength at the time.

If only she existed in the Whateley Universe . Just Imagine Wondercute with an army of Cabbits.

Sure, bring in the one thing sure to give Gunny a heart attack or make Ayla snap. :P

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • One of the supporting characters in the story is TG, and recently, the author of another superhero book series has gotten permission to use Velveteen, as well as characters from a couple other authors, in one of her books.

That was kind of the idea. but that said some of the scenes of the toys looking after Val really peg the cutness meter at max. She doesn't just use them for combat.

That was actually what convinced me to finally read through Valvateen vs. I've been a fan of Wearing the Cape since the first book came out.

  • Also, Seanan McGuire's other two series, October Daye and InCryptid are amazing as well. I personally like October Daye more, but they are both a lot of fun. Both are urban fantasies that don't go in for the classic Vampires, Werewolves, and Witches that are so popular. October Daye is populated entirely by fairies, and InCryptid is filled mostly with (you guessed it!) cryptids.

October Daye in particular has several LGBT characters, (which is no surprise, considering that it's set in San Francisco), although it's very downplayed on the theory that Faerie culture is more accepting of all sexuality for various reasons.

  • Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

    Simply wonderful.

    Quote from a time-travelling, dimensionally-displaced gadgeteer:

Victoria sobered a bit. “It was...there is this impression of the past as being a simpler time, like I must constantly be amazed by the wonders of the world. And I am constantly amazed by the wonders of the world. But it’s not because my world was simple. It’s because this world is magnificent. So was mine. So is every other world that is. They are all complex machines on a scale that I could never hope to construct, and I am in awe of their mechanic.”

    Simply wonderful.

  • A short and cautonary tale about the perils of dealing with spirits...

    http://seanan-mcguire.livejournal.com/547333.html?nojs=1

But ah; we are getting ahead of ourselves. That is the difficulty, once holidays become involved. They want everything to be a fairy tale, and nothing to be true. Perhaps this would not hurt so much, except that they remember the meaning of fairy tales, before we sanded off their edges and called them suitable for children.

The holidays remember how to bleed.

    Nacht would like this.

  • If you like Seanan McGuire's stuff, you should head over to her livejournal where she's having giveaways for the Thirteen Days of Hogswatch.
