  • Very neat idea this one but at 2500 per copy so far? a little to expensive?

but the idea of a virtual 'Cortana' at home is interesting to say the least!

  • I'm sorry, maybe it's just me, but that is the saddest thing I've ever seen. The Japanese men are so incapable of wooing a woman that they'll turn to something like this to feel loved?

    That is sad.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • It's not just you Nalley. The gadget is uncanny, and the article plays it as such. It is fake fulfillment, and I can just imagine the people who bought it when they realize after a day or two that it's just some prerecorded message with very limited interaction. They payed lots for a day of novelty, and then what? Depressing.

  • yep sad, but remember E.E. that japan just like china, has way more males of some ages than girls. So that is inevitable that one guy might not ever get married?

Thanks for that! Now I can make my android-making guy a bit less creepy / deviant-ish than he otherwise would seem to be! Why not make it a girl? ... ( :pinch:)

Also, thanks for the Opening Post. It's an interesting invention, but yes... A bit not-positive in some manner. But very cool?

Wow. I just learned that today: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ValuesDissonance/Literature

"superficial-femininity as a means of attracting females" has seen a recurrence in several modern subcultures, most notably the Anglo-European Glam Rock scene of the early- to mid-1970s and those influenced by it, and the Japanese Visual Kei scene. Although both of these did include some degree of bisexuality, they had a profound influence on later subcultures which more closely replicated the feminine-but-hyper-heterosexual fops of the 17th and 18th centuries, most notably the Glam Metal scene of the mid-1980s

    ...

Tossing it TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture and sticking with an English place... and liking the idea of a Female Roboticist better, than the sexual undertones of a male making a Galataea-thing. ... Could do male roboticist with male robot, but I'm influenced by media having mainly female human-ish 'bots, and Red Card, Virgo Intus Machina, among other non-fanfic things...

Sorry to further depress your faith in humanity but even at that price and it's limits it will sell like hotcakes. You just have to understand the context that the buyers live in.
So yah search for images of otaku bedroom. Or better yet don't. It might be kinda painful for you.
But that item will fit very well in bedrooms like that.

Oh, I know it will sell. I live in Japan at the moment. I get to see first hand all the merchandises and figurines littering the stores, and this thing being more interactive, exclusive and special than the regular collectable figurine will only make it more attractive for some. I just personally can't see the appeal.

And it's not just otakus who will be interested in this. From the video, it seems to be targeted at your average salaryman, probably one working overtime since overtime is such a big problem in Japan . I can see many men, both single and married, who are desperate for what the 3D Home promises to offer, and then end up disappointed when it fails to deliver.

  • It's easy to say it's sad for people to invest in this, or to 'fall in love' with it, but there's a lot of context that doesn't translate everywhere. The mentality might be different for various people. *sigh*

In any case, it's still technology to look forward to. Yes, it won't blow your mind, or meet the expectations of those who will buy it, but it does open the door for future development. It may be expensive now, but computers were the same way. Smart phones started as flip phones, and VR technology is still rough around the edges. We'll have to see how it develops.

But for those who one day hope to have an AI personal assistant, this might be the gateway to the possibility.
