Or What's the capital of Assyria?
The outcasts were originally inspired by an incredibly well-done Lamia/naga art and a very interesting series of tattoos on a very attractive woman. Follow up with watching Lost world and then asking myself:
"I need a leader for this band of lunatics. What's the least likely person anyone would expect to be the leader by stereotype?
And thus was Jericho born.
Ok truthfully I don't remember. All I remember was screwing around with words and then Jericho assaulted me about a quarter of the way through the second book and demanded to become part of the story.

Water level would be unchanged.
Think about it, a sponge increases in volume when it absorbs water (air in sponge is replaced with water from ocean). So sponges, no sponges, there is still the same volume of water in the ocean.

Complicated even more by the fact that flight speed is only one component of the final vector, velocity. With a good headwind, the sparrow could have a positive air speed of 30+ knots and still be going backwards relative to a stationary observation point.

For a start there is no way Sandra can get a new room mate until the psychic blindfold on Mrs Savage is removed. Presumably when she gets back from Christmas vacation, with some more knowledge about Astral phenomena she might actually know enough to point this out to someone. Fubar is going to have xome explaining to do, seeing as he is in charge of Astral security, and he completely missed this being done to a member of staff for months.

But no... I'd say the key distinction between soldier and merc is primarily the target of their loyalty. A soldier is hired and paid by a government, their 'cause' for fighting stays consistent... military service to the government. Now, the government may use them for things that are different than the 'cause' for which the individual soldier believes in, but that is a matter of government corruption, not a change in service by the soldier. A Merc, on the other hand, doesn't serve a cause. They serve where they are hired. If a 'cause' or 'government' is the contract, then that's what they serve... but when the contract is completed, they might serve a completely different cause or government, possibly even the one opposed to their previous one.
As to 70 Maxim's? Sounds like something written by someone who watched a lot of Chuck Norris and Steven Segal movies and things that makes them an expert on military actions.

The 70 Maxims for Maximally Effective Mercenaries is an in-universe document from the Schlock Mercenary webcomic. Schlock Mercenary is a strip a day humor webcomic about a troop of mercenaries in a space opera setting.
Some of the maxims apply specifically to mercenary work (Maxim 49: Every client is one missed payment from becoming a target), but some are more applicable to general military operations (Maxim 3: An ordnance technician at a dead run outranks everybody), and some of them are applicable to all walks of life (Maxim 70: Failure is not an option. It is mandatory. The option is whether or not to let failure be the last thing you do.)
