Question Guidelines for "Discovering" unlinked story titles and/or characters

  • These are not broken links, nor should they be brought out for discussion. Unless the broken link name appears in a PUBLISHED list, either Gen 1, Gen 2, the Library, or Whateley WhatIf, and there are no announcements from an author then it is not intended for public consumption or discussion.

Posting titles that have not been announced by the authors gives spoilers that tend to push us to the leeward side of removing external access from wiki links to protect unpublished and/or unannounced material from premature announcement by readers. Do not do this.

If it is not in the Gen 1 Story List, the Gen 2 Story List, the Library or the WhatIf, and you can find no authorial reference to said titles or articles, please feel free NOT to announce them, report broken links publically or speculate on what they are. It is the purview of the Author to determine when the title, characters, spoilers et al should be released, or if there should be a surprise release.

Often many of the "broken links" are projects that are being privately discussed and/or reviewed and have not passed the canon collective's, or the WhatIf Editing vetting process. These things are not intended for public reveal or discussion until the author of said documents decides to do so.

A lot of this could be, without warning "purged with fire" and never seen. I have a story that is 2/3rds complete that has not passed my final "Kill with fire" vetting process before I ask the canon crew for their blessing and checking for contradictory elements. It's called Siblings & Savages, and at the time of this writing it is mostly done. I announced the title about two months ago. People pointing out S&S is perfectly ok, because the revelation that it exists came from me.

I know for a fact that Sunshine & Fury has never been announced as an upcoming story title, and the fact that people are fishing these up and publically posting them is beginning to irk me.

So please, do a fast forum search for announcements of titles by the author or release dates before posting them publically. Please take the time to ensure that said doc links have been announced for public discourse and comment before you inadvertently (or trying to be clever) release the names of new stories, characters or any other thing that might inspire us to revoke end-user and wiki access to the tag system. These things are terminally intertwined. We cannot kill access to one without killing access to the other.

A little bit of care in the dissemination of information is appreciated.

And using the unannounced titles in foodie bookie bets is extremely poor form. I, personally will never release a story that gets "previewed" so that someone can feel clever because they accessed info they should not. I almost killed Small Mercies because someone pushed the name "Anomaly" up prematurely before I had done the reveal on Diamondback's sister's codename.

This kind of thing can be extremely irritating to the author. Please do not do this.

  • If you are looking for stories, the latest are linked in the right and left columns. Older canon stories can be found by clicking on the "Stories" button up at the top. There shouldn't be any reason for poking around elsewhere.

  • And if you ever have a doubt about whether something is open for public discussion or not - PM one of the authors rather than asking the question on the open forums.

I mean, follow JG's rules above about what is public consumption first. We don't want to drive the authors nuts with constant pointless PMs. But when in doubt, a private question about whether or not a matter is private is always preferable to a public question.

  • Feel free to harass me with the PM's, if you're not sure who to ask. It will give me something useful to do while the actual writers, well, write.

  • Briefly moved the thread to the suggestion box, then realized that most people were more likely to read the Quad section.

  • Should this be added to the pinned topics list?

  • Thank you this thread and the guidelines. I like the stories and new characters to be surprises, either when they are revealed by the authors on the forums themselves or when the stories themselves come out each week. It is like a gift you just love to unwrap by reading and learning new things about this shared universe and the people in it. Having it spoiled by someone who isn't the author of the story in question or characters is very annoying. Like those who spoil movies you haven't seen, ruining the big reveals in them. Plus I would hate for us to lose any of the wonderful stories being created just because some individuals can't stop poking around and then posting it on the forum.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • Sometimes the Muse is a fragile creature, that cannot deal with premature exposure as it needs time to ripen, sometimes it's a muscle-bound animal, with scars on it's knuckles, and encrusted blood under it's claws, that kicks down the doors of the brain, and screams "WRITE ME!"

No matter the form of the inspiration, the final arbitrator of when a piece of art is ready to be released, is the creator of that artwork. No-one else.

To look behind the curtain, and inspect the sausage factory, without invitation is RUDE, and, will possibly mean that the story you are looking for, will never be finished.

Yes, i want to read the next parts of several of the stories-in-progress here, but i have learned to be patient, so as not to spoil the surprises.

(I still have at least half an album's worth of tracks that i have been chewing over for nearly 30 years. They'll be done when they're done.)

  • Yeah as much as I like non specific hints as to what is in the works, it kind of kills the fun and point with people discussing titles of stories where the title isn't specifically published, for the foodie bookies thread, knowing what authors have something in the works is one thing but for instance some people were guessing "The Final Trump" before part 1 was published and that's a whole new character, that hasn't been in any fanfiction so we at least need a way to hide the titles from the non-authors, say a word scrambler and with what ifs have it so only the Canon authors and the ones that the what if author permits can see the real title. Or maybe just temp titles until ready for publication for everything, that way you could mislead us if we put stock in that title list with the broken links

Any Bad Ideas I have and microscene OC character stories are freely adoptable.

There's a hiding feature, it just hasn't been used all the time, or something: whateleyacademy.net/index.php/forum/sugg...links?start=10#32710

Okay, unhidden things that should be secret are only discoverable by the Tag System, and just trying random numbers in the url like: 805 (Right... forgot that we shouldn't link to unaccessibibles. :wall:) ... doesn't reveal anything other than the presence of "something". It could be an announcement, it could be a story, it could even be a WhatIF.

It's actually really hard to find titles for unknown things except by accident, if you're not trying.

All you would be able to get is the number of articles that have been used, which isn't very useful, and it'd be a lot nicer to just ask (edit: about the size of the queue, that is... ... We know that there was enough to have 2 stories/week for 15 weeks, when the switch was made to 3 stories / week, IIRC.). We know, I think, that up to Kayda 11 is happening... And given Reinforce's url, we know that there are at least 813 articles... So that means... something...

  • But Malady, all my Front Page News bits count as articles. So do the various working documents that have tons of old notes, CH.org forums dumps of private forums sections, and so on. The fact that something is an articles does NOT mean that its a story meant for your eventual consumption.

Precisely why knowing how many articles there are, is interesting, but basically useless, if we readers want to make more accurate guesses about the queue. ... I think. ... I could have been clearer. I ramble lots.

  • But even that 813 isn't accurate, because several stories were entered more than once, and deleted. So there are likely orphaned numbers.

  • All of these things are all well and good, when it comes to discussions about the website, and the limitations of the system that is being used to host the WU stories, BUT,

Finding the loopholes and pointing them out to the site Admin = Good.
Using the loopholes to access the stories before they are officially released = Bad Person! No Cookie!

Please remember that the people who are letting us read these stories are doing so voluntarily, and that we are guests in the space where they play.

Like all good jam sessions, there is space for other people to take part and play as well, but it all depends upon us being excellent to each other.

For example, JG's: "Ashes and Steel" took years to arrive, but the final result was worth the wait.

    Please be patient.
