  • There is some speculation about what happens when many, many layers of quotes happen. If this is the reason for 5 and 6-deep quotes in some threads, I'll answer that right here, right now.

Bear in mind that if it gets too deep, it might accidentally become some kind of Class X diagram that warps the mind. You have been warned.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

Welp is merely a mis-spelling of the word Whelp, which means "young-un"

If you ever actually have a REAL conversation that needs nested quotes to that depth, we'll see what happens. In the meantime... let's stick to using the forums the way they are INTENDED and stop giving malicious hackers ideas to try.

Nope. Not unless differences in English dialect and spoken register fail to exist in your speech and writing.

The usages of the two words, one a transcription of informal verbal usage, the other a near archaism, may not even overlap. My own word choices tend more toward Appalachian dialect over Deep South, and there's no confusion for me of 'welp' and 'whelp'.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that absurd nesting caused problems other than making the post difficult to read.

What makes using 'welp' as a dialect version of 'well' different from using 'young-un' as a dialect version of 'young one'?

  • A) Pet peeves are personal. I have mine, you have yours, and neither is really right, except that somewhere along the line, little brainworms set bits that made us sensitive to certain words or word combinations. Guilty as charged - my brain is corrupted in spots, like all of ours

    2) I might have to do something I thought I'd never do,which is to explore the wonderful world of what might be if Kristin DID carry through a threat of making the color scheme into a Wondercute nightmare. Depends on personal time. And tolerance for hideous color combos. But think - it could be worse. What if she made it into a Jericho color scheme?

Many tartan setts result in reasonably large color blocks onto which paisley design motifs could be embroidered or appliqued. The real challenge would be to see if the same look could be achieved with modern loom-weaving techniques.

  • Well, some forums types allow for 'personal' themes with easy switching methods ... but Joomla is a lot more complicated than a forums. For us to do it, I'd probably have to define multiple user ranks for registered users, one for each theme and assign users to the rank for the theme they wanted. And then I'd have to build and maintain each of those themes from the ground up. Every component you see... every element in the sidebar, every menu item, etc... would need a duplicate using a different template for each different rank, visible only for that rank, hidden for everyone else.

Huge escalation of time and effort.

  • Ouch.

Having to duplicate everything for alternate colours is a very good reason for not switching colours. There are probably ways to make it easier, but most would require overhauling the whole system first.

Someone web-savvy enough might be able to write custom CSS scripts to load instead of the default, but that would mean knowing CSS and how to tell the browser to substitute CSS.

[EDIT] Just did some DOM editing. Is this pink enough?

  • The CSS file for JUST the basic template for the site is over 7000 lines of code. Plus a couple thousand more lines for the forums. Some of the CSS is templated using LESS and generated as needed for a given page. Just like the site itself is templated using PHP and the html is generated depending on what modules your menu choice and user rank tell it to load.

  • That sounds painful.

As difficult as it may be, it is far from impossible for a user to modify what they're looking at. Someone, somewhere will find a way to turn the entire website pink. It may not be perfect or cover every inch of the site, but it can happen.

  • Well.. its pink... but 'pink' enough to push it into Wondercute? You'd need to do things with lens flare on module edges. Modules would probably have to spin onscreen and then dance in place until you touched them. Little cascades of pastel light should rain down when you select things... but that's tough to do with a static image, I know. :)

  • I have a browser extension that places animated unicorns and rainbows on the screen. Sadly, the pinkification was undone when I refreshed the page. At least the Cornify extension turns some of the text pink as flavours it with words like "lovely," "sparkly," "amazing," "charming," "happy," and of course, "cute."

  • Just so Kristin doesn't panic - if I do those, it'll be a screen cap of the existing nested quotes, modification with GIMP, and then posting as a picture, not doing the nasty coded multiple-embedded nested quotes again. Nothing that would alter the basic non-offensive color scheme we have. Doing Wondercute or Jericho could trigger a lot of people
