Yikes. Take your time, do what the doctors say, and just get better.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • As someone in the same boat,I sympathize. I had one ( my second major one) back around Easter. it certainly sucks. I'm learning things over for the third time in my life. Things like walking and writing, but if you have the fortitude, you will get better. I still slur a little when I get really excited or try to talk fast... I sound a little drunk XD. and I'm still on the cane and crutch stage, but I hope to be back to normal ( or in my case, what passes for it) by Christmas.

    You have my sympathy.

Even though you will be home in 4-6 weeks, it will only be the start of the recovery process.

I had surgery to remove most of a brain tumour 4 & 1/2 years ago, and it took me the best part of 4 years to mostly recover my original functionality.

It will take a while, but it will happen.

There's a reason that the brain is described with the quality of "Neuro-plasticity."

For motor-control exercises, if there is any skill that you have already practised before the stroke, that emphasises muscle memory, whether it's guitar-playing/fiddle-playing/knitting/fine-chisel based manual-woodworking techniques/T'ai Chi, then start to work on that as soon as you can.

You may have spent years using the neurons to make your muscles learn the movements. Now you can use the learned reflexes in the muscles, to re-train the brain, to work around the damage that has been done.

One effective technique, i used, is to think your way through a movement pattern, especially when you cannot do it physically yet. Think your way through it, remembering what it felt like to do it successfully, and use that as a way of pre-training the neurons. You will still have to physically train the muscles to re-connect the neural pathways with the muscles, but that will come with practise.

It WILL be incredibly frustrating when you find that you cannot do some of the simplest of things, that you used to be able to do without thinking about them. This will pass.

If there is a skill that you always wanted to learn, but never had the time, then the time to do so is now. If you are practising some motor control exercises, then use them to learn a new skill. My arc-welding has improved a large amount. :D

Also, improve your diet. It's not the "You are what you eat", but it's more that you are made of what you eat. Optimise your diet, so your body has to do less work processing the ingredients that you are feeding it, and your body will repair itself more easily.

As ever, our thoughts, and prayers, will be with you.

  • out of in patient rehab, start out patient tomorrow. my left leg still drags and my hand does't have fine control back yrt, but I am in a good place even if my parent, who are watching/playing nursemaid for me are getting on my nerves some by helping a little to much and not giving me the space I need at times. I was in for a week short of 3 months.

Good to hear you are out of Rehab, first hurtle down.
I hate to ask but how old are you? And do not begrudge your folks, it is the most fearful thing of a parent to have a child pass before them, So let them fret on you for a little while. But try and kindly start asking for you space back a little at a time, start small and do it one little thing at a time. playing nurse maid might be therapy to them in a way. Like when a baby is sick for the first time parents have to remind them selves the baby is still ok and with them, by checking in on them more than normal even if the child is asleep. And right now this stroke may have scared the "place your colorful term here" out of them. But hang in there.

  • Thought I'd give you all an update on my condition;
I'm doing well with rehab, I'd say I am back to 80 of baseline, with most of the rest pending until I et more feeling back in my hand and leg. been back to writeing, whateley stuff and trek, though i need to take frequent brakes as I still have double vision and othe ocular wonkiness. I'm working on catching up on the stories I missed. back i n the kitchen bakeing and basically getting back into my groove.

  • Actually, if you wear spectacles, there are some lens coatings available that will cut on the blue-light from the monitor too. Since I spend a lot of time on the computer, I went with it on my current pair.
Not all brands offer it, however. You might have to shop around a bit. My lenses are made by Hoya, a Japanese maker not quite as famous as Zeiss or Essilor, but with a good reputation.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • A year ago I was having a heckuva time with headaches at the end of every work day, unable to focus. Got my eyes checked (first time, uhh, since dinosaurs walked the earth)... and they were fine.

Puzzled by it, I realized that I had no issues at home spending all day staring at a screen - so took a closer look at the monitor at work. It was flickering, hard to notice unless squishing nose up to it. Replaced that sucker asap and voila... problem went away.

No idea if it'd apply to your issue, but could be worth a check? The flickering was really really subtle, but the new monitor they gave me cleared up my everyday headaches immediately.

you should have seen the nurse's face when she walked in n me poking my butt in in-patent and I explained things in those exact terms: momentary puzzlement then a smirk as she got it.

had an eye appointment yesterday; big improvement in no more double vision. I'm still having issues with focusing on stuff like books or text on screens that is at arms length or closer. still got trough most of Vamp p4 today, before Arrow distracted me.

With some things, if you don't do it yourself, you won't re-learn the muscle memory that lets you do it in future.

One of the last Petra stories has really effective depictions of someone living through this, and having to work through the exercises.

Also, i can relate to both of the t-shirts. :D

Exactly the reason I was getting cranky, both while I was still in patient (Do you need that cut up? NO), and at home (do you need that door opened? I may be going slow and look half fallen down but I have it)

  • Had a vision re-eval today, and an exam the other week, and I am happy to report that while I still have a few issues to correct I was testing in the normal range for a good part of the testing plus they removed one of the prism lenses from my glasses and much reduced the remaining one.

what does this mean? that I have a lot of reading and transcribing to do.
