Question Books you want to read, but can't bring yourself to.

  • The subject might sound weird, allow me to explain. The very last book Sir Terry Pratchett wrote was "The Shepherd's Crown" I picked it up as an e-book within a week of it being available. Ever since then it has sat on my E-reader unread. I just can't bring myself to read his final book and to know it will be the very last one of his I'll ever read.

Am I the only one who has this sort of reactions? Do you have any books you can't bring yourself to read? Not because you have no desire to do so, but for some other reason?

  • Closest I have gotten to that personally is War and Peace. I did read it...but it was perhaps the only time I really did not like reading a book. I got it because it seemed like something every collection of books needed to have and frankly it was such a famous work I wanted to read it. After the first chapter, I really did not want to read it any longer. But I refused to let the book win and forced my way through. I will never again buy a piece of Russian literature however.

That falls under the category of books you think you should read. I've had more than a few of those. Twilight was so raved about at the time I gave it a try, and put it down about a third of the way through when Bella went into raptures about what's his name's body.

    I'm talking about books you know you'd love, but for some reason, in my case it's the very last one, you can't bring yourself to read it. Writing that down I realize how screwed up that must sound. -_-;;

I wanted to read it until I started. The Napoleonic period is something I enjoy, but that book...

Like I said, it is the closest I have gotten to what you describe, but I treat books like junk food, I can't stop myself. even when I want to. :)

  • Hrmmm... Does it have to be books only? Because it could be fit for other media too. Movies or videogames for example. Because there are stories in there too.

I'll admit, Persona 4 is one of those for me. I have the game, I started it, got some good way... Then never went back to it. I don't know why, I liked the story, and I do wana see the end. But at the same time, the schedule system meant I'd most likely never see all the social links, or miss some of them. The game system sometimes felt too... Too likely that if you miss on one thing, you might screw yourself over. So when something else shinier came around, I went there instead.

  • I quit half way through Lolita, too flowery and prosaic.

  • Closest I've had to this that I can recall off the top of my head is having Starship Troopers sitting around for some three years before I finally managed to prioritise it and start reading.

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

  • Dangerous by Milo Yiannopoulos.

Brilliantly written, when he wasn't trying to be an arse. Atrocious subject matter when he was, which was when I stopped.

  • Milo is one of those: "WTF" people, (on 'my' side) honestly. The best way to understand him?

Think Rush, just British and cruder.

And books I want (or 'should') read but just can't: About half the fantasy works sitting on my shelves or in my kindle.

  • I'll actually agree with the first suggestion: I got The Shepherd's Crown the day of release; I was actually able to get about 50 pages in.

Those 50 pages just tore my heart out, I keep wanting to go back but have never quite been able to make myself do so yet.

Actually, for me it was the one about the goblins. Snuff?

That's when I really noticed that his writing had gone.

Shepard's Crown, never want to read. Couldn't stand the Tiffany stuff.

  • Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness. It took me years to read this because I would read for about thirty minutes and fall asleep forgetting what I read. It happened every time I tried to read the book.

  • I feel like I have a lot of these. I haven't read very much on consequence in the last five years, which I put down to the depression mostly. I've been lucky enough to read some things lately and actually get through them but I've always been really pedantic about my media. Throw in a general lack of money and I simply can't afford a lot of regular series.

People have mentioned Twilight, but I'll add my voice there. I've really, honestly, genuinely tried to read it but I can't get a few chapters in before throwing it away in disgust. Forget the subject matter, the prose makes me cringe.

Dracula is one that, as someone who loves vampires, I should have read. Again, I can't get past the way it's written but this time it's an issue of the older writing style.

Similarly, I haven't picked up the new Dresden or any of the Kim Harisson books. I tried reading the latest Laural K. Hamilton Anita Blake novel but the subject matter turned me off. Which I certainly take as indicative of some of the changes I've gone through. Likewise, I haven't been able to pick up any of Yasmine Galenorn's Three Sisters books, despite being a fan of them earlier.

The statement in my signature is false.

  • Most of the non-cannon stories.

    For a weird reason.

This is the Whateley story site. I come here to read Whateley stories.

Monday night, actually, Tuesday morning my time, is Whateley story time. Loading the page and finding the release is a non-Whateley story is kind of disappointing. Enough so that I can't bring myself to read whatever story it happens to be.
