Hey people!!! My cousin just finished basic training in the Australian Army, and he's shipping out to his first posting sometime next month. I thought I'd give him some music to listen to while he's off-duty, and so I'm trying to find some good songs to give him. I've already managed to acquire one of my favourite songs 'This is War' by 30 seconds to Mars, so if anyone could recommend or suggest some combat, war, action or rock (he likes rock) songs, I'd be grateful. Before anyone asks, no, I don't know where he's going, I have no idea what part of the army he's in (other than that it's a infantry role, and has a overseas posting), and I have no bloody idea whether he'll be in a combat area. All I know is that he's got a month before his platoon ships out, and that he's going to be fighting. Other than that, all I can do is give him some tunes to listen to. Any suggestions???

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

In my line of work, there's tons of vets. And since you already mentioned it, a common theme I've seen is they love, or learn to love, rock music. Or country, but I don't judge.
One of the bands that supports vets here more than any other I know of is Five Finger Death Punch. Absolutely toss some of their stuff on the playlist.
I'd also add Thrice, Nothing More, Sabaton (history metal!), AC/DC, Bring Me The Horizon, Coldrain, DOROTHY, Halestorm, and Breaking Benjamin ("I Will Not Bow," specifically).

For best results, find out what the guy likes. And don't forget there'll be times when all he wants to do is chill out.
It's well-established that what a Gen-Xer, like me, would consider "relaxing" might not be as calming to a young Millenial, so YMMV. I've nearly fallen asleep to Judas Priest and Soundgarden.
Groups: Dropkick Murphys, Tiger Army
Individual songs:
(Just about any song providing the title for an episode of Supernatural)

So true. A playlist built from 'the music of Supernatural' with everything from that show that wasn't specifically added to be a joke (or show that one of the guys was possessed) would be one hell of a playlist.

it's a bit more traddy. If your cousin likes Dropkick Murpheys he may find they have a version of this. Also try North Sea Gas. They are a bit out of my listening preferences but they should have some war music, after all they do rocked up versions of traditional songs of the Scots and the Irish.

Definitely a YMMV pick:
My old cassette tape copy of the Heavy Metal Soundtrack album ended up being played so often it barely survived a Med cruise.
