  • There’s Comic Con
There’s Tenno-con (basically E3 for the game Warframe)
There’s Gen Con (for tabletop gamers)

So why isn’t there a Whateley Academy Convention??? Well, I, the Great and Powerful Minh, seek to change this. Plus, you don’t even need to leave your desk/couch/wherever.

I’m willing to run a voice chat session every year on Discord for fans of whateley academy to chat with each other from wherever they are in the world. The reason for having a voice-based system is so we can all talk without the restrictions of typing all our messages, while also keeping our private lives (and faces) from each other. Anonmyity is the lifeblood of the internet, of course.

I plan to run it on the 25th August each year, permitting for my absence in extenuating circumstances. Once we’ve seen how the first session goes, I’ll try it again next year, if all goes well. During the event, chat rooms will be set up for live discussion of events, and if I can get the author’s approval, have exclusive ‘Q&A sessions’ about the WU.

As a community, this is a great chance to get to know your fellow forum members better, but I’d like to add that any personal information should be left out of conversation. This includes both telling, and asking. If you want to give personal details to another user, contact them privately through discord’s messaging system.

It’s not really a convention. More like a yearly meet n greet.

If all goes well this year, I’ll run it again next year. The date may be subject to change however. It’s also your choice whether to attend, but the more the merrier as the old saying goes.

So, let this year be the first year of Crystal Con!!!

  • Regarding the date...

The Whateley official anniversary falls on August 27. So, having the meet at the preceding weekend is sorta appropriate.

For the following years, we should aim to have it either on the 27th or on the nearest weekend.

  • Hrm. 27th. Timing. Go figure. Close though.

Sounds like an interesting idea, though people will have to volunteer for it, so whoever wants to show up...

You may have to put it for 24 hours, maybe longer, since, as you said, it's all around the world. People have different sleep schedules and such. You might want to have different moderators for it.

As for having it voice-only, I'm not so sure on that either. You'd at least want to keep a chat option. If it's for anonymity, then text covers you even more. Some of us might not be comfortable with voice, and better with chat. Some might not even have microphones either. Chat would also allow those who missed out to read a chat log, and catch up on Q&As they weren't there for.

And if you do plan Q&A, you may also want to set up a schedule. That way, people can plan to be on for that specific time.

That is a good point. The date is subject to change, and I will have to run it for at least 48 hours to allow people in different time zones to log in. Yes, there will be a text chat, with a seperate sound section. If anyone would like to volunteer as moderators, I'm happy to get some help organising and running this. I've gone back to uni, as my knife wounds have mostly healed, and I've got most of my shit back together after the fire. So, I may be in lectures on the day, or doing other stuff. It would help to have a group of mods to make sure the conversation doesn't go sideways. Kinda like the people who check for live weapons at the door and keep drunkards out of Comic Con. So, I'm happy to get some assistance.

I've arranged some of the details already. People will have to get a discord account and download the app onto their computers (not sure if a phone app exists, so be wary of that). Signup and download is free, so there shouldn't be any problems with that. If you own a desktop, and you don't have a microphone built in like you would on a laptop, you should probably invest a few dollars in a headset with a mike if you haven't already. If you want more anonymity, there are websites where you can download speech disguisers for use with your computer's microphone software. I'm not a expert in that, so try looking into that if you want to talk, but don't want to reveal your real voice.

If any authors would like to apply for Q&A sessions, or would be interested in helping out, PM me or anyone who has volunteered for being a mod. I'll post their names below here once I start getting applications.

  • Discord (the gaming chat app) sure exists for phones. Well, for iOS and Android. And it's possible to run it from a web browser too.

  • Why do we need to have it just once a year? Why not have a Disc server open 24/7? Allowing authors and staff a chance to hang out and chat with fans and vice versa in real time. Have a handful of channels devoted to various topics. Including such things like the old RP channels from days of old for example. And ofc...Authors would have their own areas etc. They could host imprompto meet and greets etc. There is plenty of options avail. Something to think about.

If you want a 24/7 chat room, you're sitting in one now. Crystal Con is going to be a specialist thing, for meeting and greeting fellow forum members and talking with authors in a way that you would otherwise be unable to do so on this forum, while maintaining anonymity. The Crystal Hall forums are already here, but such a discord server allows people to get together and catch up without dealing with the formalities of this forum.

Also...I'm afraid that it will go stale if kept running 24/7. If it's only open for a limited time each year, then it gives readers something to look forward to. If Comic Con kept it's doors open 24/7/365, would you want to go??? If a community market sets up tents in the park and stays there forever, would you keep going???

  • Unfortunately...A forum cannot compete with a Disc server. They are two different animals. Since i wasn't around for the MIRC/IRC chat channels that were going back in the day i can't make an honest assessment of the traffic generated. But i do know. A Disc community will be as strong as the community that supports it. And a ton of people already use Disc for other reasons. So it's easy for those of us who are doing other things such as gaming, chatting etc can access the WU and stay up to date on the goings on.

  • Well, I'll try and attend.
I wont be on voice, I dont use a mike for a number of reasons, but text should make it easier to log. It also reduces the chance of me saying something I shouldnt :)

If you want me to be on for a Q&A session, I'll try, but may not be able to guarantee it due to RL

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

An thriving Discord server generally requires enough new conversation start points to ensure that anyone logging in can find a place in the flow of things that they are not 'behind' or worse, 'lost' in the discussion. It does lend itself to quicker conversations... which is why IRC and similar things have shown up in Whateley connections in the past (the authors still maintain channels for meetings and conversations about plotlines and such for those times that require more discussion). I had actually planned to include a browser based IRC client to connect in to fan and WhatIF channels but unfortunately, the VM doesn't allow for it and its not worth the added price to go to a different (non-Google) VM that will. If at some point I revisit who we're running a server with, I may look at the IRC thing again.

On the flip side, a functioning Discord server can break a forums community. People will post something on the forums and then the conversation will get picked up on the Discord / Chat channel and leave the thread orphanned. One of the best parts of forums is that they retain a living record. Something IRC/Discord and other such things only do if someone runs a bot and keeps logs... and THEN, its not organized by topic. Ask the 2nd Gen authors how much hassle it was to keep track of all the discussions and decisions being made and how much time everyone spent looking through the logs every week.

    This.

I'm not against having get-togethers, but the IRC vs. Forum dichotomies is one of the reasons that the workshop that i'm a member of, has a lot of communication problems.

You'll get some people who have the time to be online all the time, others that can't do that due to external commitments, and other people who will have drive-by-conversations.

Forums give a longer-term record of what was going on.

IRC is great for instant conversations, so if you're doing anything that is time-based, or time-critical, then it can help, but if the people that you need to talk with are not online at the time when you need an answer to your questions, then it will be frustrating.

An online get-together would be good, but the Canon Cabal already do this in some form, and they're the ones that really need to communicate with each other. This is why they already use these tools.

  • Hey everyone, just reminding you that I'm still looking for the following help for Crystal Con 2018 on August 25th. I need people to help, as it will be run for 48 hours, and members on the other side of the globe to your location will be asleep when you're awake and participating with the discord. Remember, experience with this site isn't required, but it is important that you get to know people on this site before applying (if you are a newbie, or haven't been here that long (well, I could be told the same. However, I've made quite a few more posts than you'd attribute to fresh meat on this site, so I'm not sure whether I'm a newbie or not).

Ignoring that rambling paragraph, we still need volunteers, as well as authors for the Q&A sessions. Currently, Astrodragon has said that they may be able to attend as a Q&A participant, but I'm looking for other canon authors. Currently, the only person to volunteer is Astrodragon, so if anyone else would like to apply, I'm all ears. Any other authors??? Nalley??? Kristin??? Morpheus??? JG??? Anyone???

Also looking for volunteers for moderation in the following cities

    USA/Canada
    - LA, Vegas or Phoenix

    - Dallas, Kansas, Minneapolis or Oklahoma

    - Salt Lake City or Denver

    - Washington DC, Montreal, Boston, NY or Atlanta

    - Edmonton

    - Fairbanks

    - Halifax

South America (if there is anyone there):
    - Manaus

    - Brazilla

    UK
    - London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, or Douglas (Really, anywhere in the UK is fine)

    Europe
    - Paris

    - Zurich

    - Rome

    - Budapest

    - Berlin

    - Madrid

    Africa (if anyone is there)
    - Cairo

    - Johannesburg

    Middle east
    - Anywhere

    Russia (IAIT)
    - Moscow

    -S.t Petersburg

    - Yekativik

    - Novosibirsk

    - Norlisk

    Asia/Pacific
    - Beijing

    - Taipei

    - Taiwan

    - Bangkok

    - Tokyo or Shiniwara

    - Nagano

    - Anywhere in India

    - Singapore

    - Seoul

    - Shanghai

    - Ho Chi Minh (no relation) City

    Australia/New Zealand
    - Sydney (might need someone other than myself, otherwise pretty good here)

    - Darwin

    - Hobart

    - Melbourne

    - Perth

    - Auckland or Wellington

    Pacific Islands/Indonesia/Hawaii
    - Jakarta

    - Hawaii (didn't put it under USA due to not being part of continental USA)

    - Manilla

That's all. If you're in a area, and you're not responding and no one is modding for you, you're letting yourself down by not responding or volunteering. I'll at the very least need two mods for every major continent (so, AU, Europe, US (which will need 3 or 4 at the very least), Asia (same as the US), and UK; as well as 3-5 other people in miscellaneous locations to provide support in more remote locations with less people per square mile).

I'm hoping Dr. Bender can provide some support here in Oz. I'm not sure if any other users are here, but if there are any in Southern Australia or down near Perth, please feel free to volunteer.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • Any particular reason for choosing Manaus and Brasília (not "Brazilla", by the way, even if our capital seems to generate more grief than a Toho kaiju...)? Or you have already found moderators for, you know, the actual major cities?

I'm trying to keep mods in as many time zones as possible. It's not the cities, but their proximity or location relative to world time zones. Manilla & Brasilla are both in areas that can serve for every location above and below them, as well as in surrounding areas that aren't home to any particular cities.

Also, you're South American/Live in South America??? Damm, I didn't realise.

  • OK PEOPLE!!! 11-12 DAYS TILL THIS SHOW GETS ON THE ROAD!!! DESPERATELY NEED VOLUNTEERS TO MOD. KRISTIN, PLEASE PUT A ANNOUNCEMENT WITH THE DETAILS AND REQUEST FOR MODERATION UP FOR PEOPLE TO SEE, IF YOU WOULDN'T MIND

ALL HASHES AND USERNAMES WILL NEED TO BE GIVEN VIA PM ON THIS SITE TO ME TO AVOID ANYONE GRABBING INFORMATION THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO GIVE AWAY. PRIVACY OF THE AUTHORS AND DENZIENS OF THIS SITE IS MY UTMOST CONCERN. YOU HAVE MY ASSURANCES AS A GENTLEMAN THAT I WILL NOT SHARE, DISTRIBUTE, SPAM OR OTHERWISE ABUSE YOUR DISCORD USERNAME AND HASH TO ANY EXTENT OR FOR ANY MEANS. CROSS MY HEART AND HOPE TO BLOODY DIE.

Now that the need-to-see stuff is safely visible and out of the way, I'd like to add a few things to the information:

    1. The first day will be the 25th, which is either a Saturday here on this side of the date line, or a Friday on the other side. People should be prepared to miss some things due to sleep, but I'm glad that there probably won't be too many interferences to people's work due to the con going over the weekend.

    2. TO ALL PEOPLE WHO HAVE APPLIED/ARE GOING TO APPLY AS MODS!!!: I will need you to create a Discord account if you don't already have one, and send the username and user hash to me by PM so I can invite you and set up permissions. Mods will have the ability to overspeak people in forums using the 'Priority Speaker' function. Remember, this is activated via a keybind, so check what key on your keyboard it is bound to, and make sure not to abuse this privilege. Kristin, would you mind creating a discord account and sending me your hash and username so that I can add you to the mods list??? You ARE the admin of this site, and therefore will be valued as a moderator to make sure things don't go south for the winter.

    3. TO ALL PEOPLE WILLING TO ATTEND: I will post a link on this forum on the day, but failing that (if technical difficulties ensure or something else happens), I will need a discord username and hash within the next 11 days. This is so that in the event of something having been cocked up in the chat creation I can make sure that everyone can get online, even if I have to invite each and every one of you personally.

    4. TO ALL AUTHORS WHO WILL BE (OR WHO WILL TRY TO) HOSTING Q&A FORUMS: I will need a discord username and hash so I can sort permissions out, as well as invite you early so that things can be arranged before 'doors' are 'opened'. If you do not have discord, please create one.

    5. PEOPLE WE NEED MODS!!! This should be clear, as otherwise things will become rather heated, and no one will be moderating the discussion.

List of people who have agreed to moderate

    RoseBlack

Authors doing a Q&A panel (or who will try):

    Astrodragon

ATTENTION ALL READERS: A ANNOUNCEMENT IF YOU WOULD CARE TO LISTEN!!!

On August 25th, the weekend prior to this site's anniversary, WA will have it's first online 'convention' on Discord. The event, called Crystal Con, will be open for three days across the 25th, 26th and 27th of August this year. It will be hosted on the Discord web chat application, so be sure to create a account if you are willing and wanting to attend, and do not already possess a discord account. Registration is free, and it can be used for tons of other stuff as well.

The convention will allow WA members to chat in both text format and with voice chat rooms, and will also feature live Q&A sessions with the authors of this website. Currently, we are looking at appearances from E.E. Nalley and Astrodragon (with Astrodragon currently undecided ATPT), and hopefully this can be arranged in a proper fashion.

Up until the launch date, we will require people to apply as Moderators. Since this is a global event, with this forum and site having readers all across the globe, some dedicated people will have to be making sure that no one says anything stupid or harmful to themselves or another user. Applications are open, and all applications will, alongside your Discord user name and user hash (the number underneath your username). These (as it turns out) are not required for invitation, but will be needed to add you as a moderator and grant you appropriate permissions within the server. Crazy Minh will be acting as the global moderator, and the host).

Moderators will be required to log into discord two days prior to the convention, for a planning and orgnasation session. ALL AUTHORS HOSTING A PANEL WILL ALSO HAVE TO BE PRESENT. PM'S WITH THE INVITATION WILL BE SENT THREE DAYS BEFORE HAND. THE LINK WILL BE SET TO EXPIRE WITHIN 24 HOURS, SO DON'T DELAY IN OPENING IT!!!

IN ADDITION: MODERATOR NUMBERS ARE CURRENTLY VERY LOW, SO WE DO AND WILL NEED PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER. THERE IS NO REWARD, BUT YOUR ACTIONS WILL BE NOTED AND APPRECIATED BY THE USERS OF THIS FORUM.

Note that only people with a forum username will be attending. The link will be posted in the forum thread 'Crystal Con' on the day, but will only be available to registered forum members. It will be hidden to everyone else to avoid spammers from logging on.

See you on the 25th everyone!!!

  • Not undecided; but I do need to sort out a time for you.
Considering we have people all over the globe, may I suggest using GMT for times, everyone can convert to/from that and it reduces confusion.

  • Depending on what's happening, I should be able to do a Q&A - but very likely it will be text only because my house is still torn up and facilities (and privacy) is very limited.

  • I haven't gotten a confirmation on my work schedule for the end of the week there yet (its a good bet I'll be called for shows simply because its the end of the season and many of the kids that work for the summers start back in school before we wrap up). I should, however, have Monday open no matter what. If you'd like to schedule me in for something Monday, I'll be there... and I'll probably be handy for much of the rest of the weekend too, I just can't commit to that yet.

  • If you’re that in need of mods, I could give it a go. Never been s mod though, and I will be working for a good chunk of those days, so access may be limited by phone for a while.

    Still, if it’ll help...

  • Didn't even know this was a thing until the announcement on the main page; that'll teach me to pay attention. I should be able to do Q and A, assuming I know the answers of course. Hate to say it, but I also have no mic, so you won't hear my laughable voice. I don't have much going on for those days, so when exactly is negotiable. And I'm free to lurk as needed.

I even have discord, so that's a plus!

6 years, yes. 88-94. Two tours in the Gulf for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Was a nuclear engineer / electronics technician - second class / reactor plant operator. There's a couple of us nukes running around the Whateley community. I think I'm the only surface (carrier) one though... the others were sub types.

  • CURRENT STATUS ON MODS

    - Crazy Minh (Covering for Australia)

    - Rose Black (Covering for Atlanta)

    - Nagri (need to know coverage)

    - Polk Kitsune (same as Nagri)

    CURRENT STATUS ON AUTHORS

    - Astrodragon (need to sort out time)

    - E.E. Nalley (same as Astrodragon)

    - Elrod (Possibly attending; if so need to sort out time)

    - Kristin Darken (same as Elrod)

    - Mage Oki (same as Elrod)

    OTHER THINGS

    - All discord usernames will need to be sent to me. I've done some testing, and it appears that I don't need a hash to enable permissions. Simply go onto discord and leave the application open once I send you the link. Make sure you are in one of the rooms on the Discord server. Once I'm awake or not busy. I'll enable permissions for you. It's a matter of allowing some things for mods that other users won't have access to (i.e. everyone else). Same goes for authors: I need to give you priority voice in the Q&A voice area, and I need to enable some features in other forums.

    - MODS & AUTHORS: Post me times you will be available in GMT. GMT will be used for the server time, as it is easily convertible. I will create a schedule and post it here as a excel document. This will be the con timetable.

    - EVERYONE ELSE: You have less than eight days to get a discord account ready. To anyone not on this forum and logging on as a guest, if you want to attend you might want to create a forum username and get yourself introduced. If you are a forum member...well, you know what to do.

    - EVERYONE (PERIOD): IN THE EVENT that there is a technical difficulty, or we have timing issues DO NOT PANIC!!! This is the first time anyone here has done something like this, and everyone here does (hopefully) have a life outside of these forums. Don't gripe if something goes wrong, just patiently wait until things are sorted. Communication is KEY here, so make sure that you inform me or the mods about issues before the day.

    - ON ANOTHER NOTE: I am getting round to sending out PM's to authors and users, but this is going to take time. The PM system seems not to be working, so can everyone who is a MOD or a AUTHOR please send a contact email address to me so that I can get you a link. The links expire after 24 hours, so I need to get them to you as quickly as possible. Time zones are a issue here, so every moment spent is a waste of valuable time.

THANK YOU EVERYONE. ANNOUNCEMENT IS COMPLETE.

  • The PM system works fine. However, it is purely site only. It does not send emails out. And while I do have things set up for 'you have messages' to be notified up by your logout button, if you aren't looking for it, its not obvious. And the reason I know it still works is that I get about one person a week who hasn't logged on in a year who sends me a respond to the test email I sent out last year. Well... that and the fact that i get several PM's a day. :P

  • CrazyMinh, guess it’s time I “stepped up to the plate” :)
However first I will need to create a discord server account etc and I warn you my experience with chat rooms is greener than a Golf Green
It will, due to to me installing a massive data cable network this weekend, take me until about Tuesday to get my act together re “CrystalCon”
Although as I say I’m very green re chat rooms etc I am prepared to try my hand at moderating for the UK & Ireland and can comit to the following GMT Times

    Saturday 25th August 09:00 to 23:45
    Sunday 26th August 22:00 to 24:00
    Monday 27th August 00:00 to 03:00
    Monday 27th August 10:00 to 24:00

Monday 27th August is a Bank Holiday here in England, Wales & Northern Ireland so it should be cool to chat all day instead of working

I tend to take a harsh view of those who try to S**t on other people verbally  so I might turn out to be a bit ott on those that do :silly:

As soon as I get back from work I will get on with creating a discord server account and then check through your instructions as to what I need to do next B)

  • In theory, moderating a discord chat should be similar to moderating an IRC channel, a teamspeak group, or a forums... as well as moderating any sort of live panel or seminar sessions. Generally, it means you are designated 'staff' for the purposes of information flow, organizational purposes, and in the event any policy violation occurs (and this is where it is super important that 'policy' is established in advance) it is your role to you to keep things calm and from exceeding policy. By that, I mean, moderators advocate moderation. They inject reason and calm into volatile situations, they remind people of the rules/policy and that certain actions are approaching (or over) the line of allowed policy. Most of the rest of the time, they keep things actively moving. If a Q and A is happening but no one is asking questions, the moderator should have a list of questions prepared for the panel/author to do (though they shouldn't push their questions unless the audience isn't active). If approaching the end block of a scheduled session, they have to be sure to wrap it up on time and start the next on time... or if there's give in the schedule, they make a judgement call on whether or not its worth continuing because of audience activity. Etc.

Moderators are NOT (usually) police / law enforcement. They aren't rule enforcers. That's the job of designated staff... CrazyMihn will either handle this himself or he will ask people to take the role... it shouldn't be the same people as the moderators, though often in low staffing situations it is. If he needs to combine the jobs, he'll clarify that and explain the point where he wants you to switch hats.

  • RIGHT!!!

I have got permissions handled for E.E. Nalley, all of the mods who have currently logged on, and things are looking swell. I still need Kristin, MageOki, Elrod and others to check their email/pm box for the link I have sent you. You have ~12 hours before that link expires, so please hurry.

If it does expire, I have to send another round of emails and PM's out, and while that's pretty easy, it's still annoying and repetitive.

In other news, my apartment has had the electrics checked and fixed, so now the workers are moving onto testing the pipes for heat stress or buckling. However, delays have pushed my moving back in date to sometime next september, assuming that things don't improve or there are no boosts to productivity. I've bought a big red & white 'No Smoking ' sign on Ebay so that this sort of thing (house fire caused by cigarette contacting flammable substances) doesn't happen again. Hopefully. People can be ignorant or just plain rude when it comes to signs.

  • Or assume that the sign is just a form of decoration and not to be taken seriously, like some teenagers steal street signs and hang them in their bedrooms.

  • I don't know it's one of the few things I dislike about discord. But likely because if the invite gets loose and is floating around it limits the number of people that can get a hold of it before it expires maybe?

I will admit to having a friend swipe some road signage when I was like 15. He got the signs for grove street and we also had a druid street in the next town over. So he had the corner of druid and grove...... out in the woods where we all hung out. i know but we were stupid kids back then.

  • I have a wife & kids. It's hard for me to step away and not be disturbed at the times likely to be open. However, I have some weekdays off and can catch up when everyone is at work/school.

Quick question: What will be archived so I can listen and catch up? While I am sad to miss the interactive nature of the event, this is my reality.

    Thanks!

  • OK!!! THERE ARE SOME THINGS, AND A SURPRISE!!!

1). I didn't see this coming (I should have) but I'm going to have a busy weekend trying to start repairing the damage the f**king asshole ex-tenants did to my new pad. I have to start looking for new appliances, start getting people in to patch and repair the broken pipes (or at least get a quote on how much it's going to cost (probably a lot- good thing my parents had the flat insured. God, the insurance agencies must be having a field day with my life). So...I'm going to be absent for a lot of the f**king event I thought up. Damm. So, in light of how I have to get my day started early, and since it's getting late here, I'm going to post the link early.

    2. I'm going to post the link a few hours early. Surprise!!!
Here it is. Hidden to all those who do not have a account here. I'll try and finish up the emails to those mods who haven't gotten the link yet.

Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.

  • Authors!!!

Please talk to rose black about times. I've stuffed up on that regard, and I've got too little time to sort it out. I didn't expect the last week to be this hectic: it kinda came out of nowhere.

Please!!! It's very important for the timetable to get sorted, and I forgot to get that ball rolling!!!
