What was their first hint - the lunch lady pulling a shard of glass out of her eye, or the kid telekinetically spinning up the lawn mower blades before sticking his hand in?

Have you read "How To Succeed In Evil" by Patrick McLean?

What I see here is not a 'brilliant deconstruction' or 'subverted expectations' but sad little hucksters without a drop of creativity between them trying to cash in while stroking each others egos about how brave and avant-garde they are. I'd rather clean out a horse stall, at least that crap is honest.
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Anne wrote: And if I recall the story correctly Lex Luthor is an enemy of Superman's birth parents, and transfers his pursuit of them to Clark. Generally agree with EE on this.
No. Lex Luthor is the human bald guy.

More recent iterations from the Superman mythos have Brainiac playing a role -- by action or inaction -- in the demise of the planet.
I remember reading an old story, from back in the Sixties or thereabouts, where it was stated that Jor-El was actually wrong and the chain nuclear reaction in Krypton's core would self-moderate and die out on its own -- but an agent from a rival planet (or something) artificially accelerated the reaction to cause the explosion. Of course, the agent showed up decades later to cause trouble. Fortunately this retcon was eventually ignored.
OTOH, if you go by the TV series Smallville, Lex Luthor's father, Lionel, was somewhat of a nemesis to Clark's parents. Sometimes. Depending on the season.

General Zod for instance is the big name, and there are a few other Kryptonians who have shown up to cause problems (when you start adding them up, Superman's status as "last survivor of Krypton" is a bit of a misnomer nowadays. Especially after Kandor...)

The latest retcon has Krypton being destroyed, and the survivors being hunted down, by Rogol Zaar.
With Kandor being destroyed, it's down to Zod's wife and son, Kara, and Clark and Jon Kent.
