  • Gen 2 Announcement Discussion?

So, we got some info on Gen 2! YEAH!

Also, is it me, or does Dragonsfyre's teaser sound like a pre-made character description for a Tabletop RPG? Not that that's bad... It just has that vibe to me, with the second-person description and the circumstances that is described in a way that I think makes it seem like it could be picked out of a Origin Generator Table...

    Anyone else feeling that?

Dragonsfyre Teaser [ Click to expand ]

Also also, note how Nalley's character doesn't even have a teaser, saying that:

EE will have a Generation 2 character, but even a teaser would be a huge reveal, so you'll just have to trust that he'll be up to EE's usual standards.

We don't even get a name... Which could mean that even the name is spoiler-y... Are we even sure that it's a guy?

... Anyone want to start guessing/betting on things about this massive unknown?

Also also also... Eisenmandel! Wonder how it's gonna be different from the fanfic...

Lastly, Dragonsflame, Dragonblade... 'Dragon'+[Something] name coincidence, or something more? ... Gonna ship them, just 'cause of that...

  • EE's character is interesting. And yes, even the name is a spoiler.
Eisenmadel - some differences. Biggest parts of those character changes may not be obvious for a while, because the changes are usually focused mainly in powers and not background.

Note - Cerulea doesn't have Dragon-something in her name! Just sayin'

  • The tech social changes mentioned in the announcement, some clues as to developments would be nice. [ though from one character's description we know H1! is still around ]

Did Loophole manage to work out the power issue so her special power plant could be duplicated without interacting? If not, how about less power hungry systems for power suits?
A more efficient drive system for space exploration? [ Loophole's monopole drive is good for in system work, if the power is available, I doubt it could be powered up to be able to work for interstellar travel. ]

aaacccckkk!!!! they went to 100% touch screen devices didn't they? I guess I'll have to do a character whose fingertips cut through the screens, so that those devices are 100% useless. ( you know, I get a 85% unusable / lack of response from touch screen devices, so I have to keep slamming companies that go to only touch screen interfaces )

Stupidity is a capitol offense, a summary not indictable one.

  • If I had to guess, based on market analysis, available products in reality, and using Economics training to give it my best guess (which is all Economics really is anyway... ahem...)

Because the WU has something better. Given that we are starting to see holographic projection displays in cars, and planes, projection televisions and the like, I would guess that holographic interfaces (similar to say, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, or other Anime-esque sources) may well be a plausible reason.

Similarly I also expect a lot of mobile purchase 3D printed products to the extent they almost seem like replicators, significantly better battery technology such that electric vehicles are a thing, and VR Internet as a general rule.

I have no advance knowledge of anything, this is just speculation of an outsider. I decided against even trying to audition because I don't have the time and Kitty's story is still screaming in my head so I have to devote my writing time to that :( Ah well, wouldn't be the first neat opportunity I had to pass on because I'm being a responsible grown-up :)

  • heh. heh heh heh.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! IT HAS BEGUN!!!!!

First off, the name of EE's character is of course, George.

Second off, the touch screen is dead, in favor of the goo screen. You take a bath in a nice warm vat of unmentionable muck, it reads your movements, and translates your commands. Just the thing any mobile device needs, really, is a large vat of goo.

And yes, I'm totally screwing with you all on both counts. Also, zambies.

Nah, touch-screen-only interfaces will never fully take over. The programming and writing industries are simply too big to ignore (to say nothing of gaming). Until something better than a keyboard is invented, people will continue to produce keyboards, and people will continue to make at least some devices that are compatible with keyboards.

In the case of the WU, the successor to the keyboard may be the hard-light equivalent of the projection keyboard . What would be neat about hard-light projection keyboards (besides how compact it could be once the technology gets mature) is that you could create all sorts of virtual hardware with it. If you want a keyboard in some funky ergonomic design specifically tailored for how you like to sit, you could do that. If you want extra rows on your keyboard to input non-Latin characters, you could do that. If you want an integrated joystick, you could do that. You could even have multiple keyboards to suit specific situations -- for writing you might prefer one with a deep stroke and clacky keys, but for retro-gaming you might prefer a short and smooth stroke for maximum responsiveness. Instead of cluttering up your desk with a bunch of hardware, you could just have it render whichever one you're actually using.

Note that I said not LIKELY to end well...

It really depends on just who is trying to do the petting and stroking and squeezing and...oh you get the picture. :P

Though as a side note, the mere thought of trying to squeeze said character would be a rather daunting task for most. I'll leave it to you guys to try and guess why... B)

  • I'd guess something to do with avatars, bearform, and form during childbirth possibly having a bearish character that can shift to human, or simply reinforcing the whole Loophole/Grizzy/Kodiak/Kodiak angle things we have going on :)

  • So, what do you think the big Calamity is gonna be for Gen 2?

It's supposed to top whatever Zulu is... And be a threat to Whateley Academy?

H1! Still exists... so anti-mutant-ness is still relatively widespread? ... Perhaps it's gonna be something like The Sundering, and how its Anti-Magic-Field killed off Sidhe everywhere on Earth, but this time, it's a Mutant Extinction Plan/Plot?

Also, if there is peace between Mutants and Baselines in general, after Gen 2... Whateley-'verse is gonna be so different? I guess a Gen 3 would still be writable, but it would be so different?

  • I do have to say that for me, it was okay to announce a few things about Gen 2 because it was known I was part of the cabal, and I would suspect most of you figured I'd play in the Gen 2 sandbox as well. But for the new guys, it had to be hard - confirmed Gen 2 but not yet announced because of how much work we had to do. So they had to go about their normal forum lives, helping with fan-fic, writing fan-fic that might not be made canon, and biting their tongues at some of the speculation about what Gen 2 was doing.

way back in 2007 Ayla's cutting edge laptop had a holographic display. Ten years later its reasonable to assume that screens have been superceeded by holoprojectors for most applications.

  • I was talking about WU in the old forums... but ya... the sparsity of days in which I am treated by certain senior staff in my workplace as someone with the education and experience that I have as opposed to the position they 'think' I fill... probably not worth the bile and vitriol necessary to discuss.

Also considering Mrs Careson's slow aging she could easily hold the positionfor for 100 years or more.

We have a thread for gen 2 speculation (and we authors may answer questions or we may throw in red herrings)

How about we use this thread to talk about authors and the cabal and such?

  • Just so you guys all understand the scope of things, we've been doing at least one IRC chat a week - usually 2 and sometimes more - for a year doing planning. We had a LOT to work out - and we were starting with a universe that was significantly defined. We had to fill in 10 years worth of world growth, organization growth or decay, technology change, and then come up with a series of plots. Unlike the Gen 1 universe, there is a sequence of stories for each year's arc, so basically, if you get mainstream stories through year 4, they'll number about 120. We will have side-stories and vignettes, but the mainstream stories move along in a defined arc. We filled in holes, like settling floor-plans, defined curriculum requirements, and so on. We defined several HUNDRED characters - at least minimally, and a lot in much more detail. We had to populate important student organizations that we needed right away, and at least get key leaders in the rest of them. We had to define faculty, staff, and admin changes. One truism - we all came away impressed with the detail that went into Gen 1 - and we found a few mis-steps or points of confusion in Gen 1 that we wanted to avoid.

And in some critical, MIND-BLOWING areas, we took 4 months to decide on ONE of the major events in the universe - all the while, overshadowed by the legacy Gen 1 authors and universe and stories. These guys on the Gen 2 team really have done a lot of work to get to where we're at.

They done good so far. Now it's fun time - writing :)

  • Gah! Getting a headache reading all the work that went into the creation and update for Gen 2 Whateley Universe. All those details, I'm impressed you can keep them all organized and planned so well, especially with such a large group of people working together. I can't wait to start reading the Gen 2 stories and seeing how the Whateley Universe has evolved in 10 years.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • Really excited for the new stuff everyone. I just have one question. Is this the end of folding quality fanfiction into canon? The talk in here by the authors seems to imply a much more fleshed out plan for the story in comparison to generation 1, which seems like it leaves less room for any upcoming Elrods to join up. On the other hand though, the lack of a Team for the collective of characters might indicate the oposite, making it easier to fold new characters into canon.

I have a personal interest, as it's a dream of mine to be able to contribute to canon one day. Sadly I've been without a proper computer for a couple of years, and on top of that, there was a period of about a year where I was working so much that I had basically no free time. This all coincided with the recruitment drive for g2, and I was unable to get a suitable application written out (and all I had was an awful android tablet to type on) but enough sob story.

What I'm trying to ask is, Is the dream dead till generation three, presumably five to ten years from now? Should writers with potential Kaydas or Whispers save their A-game for the future, or put it all on the line?

Personally, I'm still gonna start posting fanfiction as soon as my new laptop is shipped, but I have a lot of ideas, along with one that I can't get out of my head. I'm not asking whether or not I should try, but I'm much more likely to spend several months polishing a story if I know there's a chance for it. And if there's not, I'll still try and post quality stuff, but with less polish to make it easier to make changes after the community gets their various appendages on it and make their opinion known.

There are paths to becoming canon. I personally liked the micro-scenes that Phoenix was doing with Hank's grieving over Heyoka's death, so I took those, approached the rest of the cabal, and sponsored him in writing To Sleep Perchance to Dream. I worked with him in story development, editing, and aligning with canon (the story is OVERWHELMINGLY his - I just helped), and it was made a canon story. If you write high-quality fan-fic, you can become an author with a 'canonized' story. That path can lead to becoming part of the cabal.

As to joining Gen 2, we have a lot of authors and a plan, but there is room for adding an author. In the first year or two, anyone who came into the Gen 2 Cabal (TING2CC??) would be writing 'side' stories that are at Whateley (like WW&A or Medicine Girl) or volunteering and co-authoring a main-arc story. By the time we're in year 3, while there is an overarching plot, the exact story sequence will be done later, which gives MORE room to bring in another author if so needed or desired.

For Gen 1? I don't know if there are plans to consider adding more as we get (finally) into year 2.

In summary, write your best. If you have a question about a story and want to try to align it with on-campus canon, ask one of us in a PM. We'll help. If you're good and you're willing to ask questions and accept help AND sometimes limits to align with canon, you could very well be asked to canonize a story if not to join the team.

Also, try to set your stories On-Campus. Those kinds of stories and vignettes and micro-scenes stand out. It's hard - which is why an author should focus on that setting - because it's where most canon stories take place. You'll attract the attention of the cabal more quickly if you can write on-campus.

  • What Elrod said. Just because we've worked hard at developing a detailed plot and plan for G2 doesn't mean there isn't room for more people to potentially work themselves in. For the time being that might be kind of tricky, just because of how many authors we already have, but as we go down the road? Who knows?

If you've got some scathingly brilliant ideas that you just can't get out of your head, then by all means write them and write them well. If it's good quality and demonstrates a solid grasp of the WU as a whole, and especially if it meshes well with what we currently have planned for the future, then chances are fairly good that it will at least catch our attention. Where that leads to, only time will tell. ;)

  • Another thing to note, and here seems like a good place to post it. Just because an author has made canon, or is canon? Their fan-fictions can still continue. One of the things I asked specifically to be clarified was whether I would be able to continue my fanfictions. I was assured that not only would that be possible, it would be encouraged, along with any other new crazy ideas I had that just wouldn't fit into existing canon. ( I had made a promise to my fans, and I take those seriously.)

So all those lovely fan-fics that all of us have written? They don't need to be abandoned.

  • My little dream as pseudo-publisher of the WA Universe is to have enough authors in each of three groups (Original Timeline, Gen 2, Gen 3) to release 2 stories of the current 20-25k word, 50-60 8x11 page size (roughly 1/5 of a novel) from each of three Generations plus 1 item to the Library and at least 1 to fan fiction... each week. I would be satisfied with 4 stories from three generations and 1 from either Library or Fan Fic. Basically ranging from 1-1.6 novels worth of material of Whateley canon quality work going live every week.

Getting there... means adding at least a couple more authors to the Original Timeline team. We have a little work to do in sorting out some details about that, because we have to sort out just how much of the original plotlines we are committed to achieving. Ultimately, we want to tell the stories as they've been planned... but at the same time, without certain authors still involved in the mix; that simply may not be viable. So we need to resolve some stuff. That will give us a 'clear' list of goals and plans instead of our current oral history and 16k+ emails worth of discussions that makes it nigh on impossible to integrate new people without them wanting to flee in terror before they even get to the point of writing anything. Once we have a concise plan and goals, we can recruit some people who are willing to work 'on task' on stories that are already planned or to develop PoV characters who already have specific purposes planned for them but need to be developed as viable people in the world up to that point.

Gen 2 - is there. It is entirely possible to produce 2 stories a week with the people we currently have on the team. It'll be slower than that at first, of course, but once they get going and expand beyond just their core PoV character and are telling side stories and universe breadth stuff on top of central plotline; I expect we'll see a regular flow of stories.

Gen 3 - I have a few ideas for another expansion team. One involves a more sci-fi storyline - jumping into space, alien invasions and contact, and so forth. But I've also considered a Gen 3 team that is an 'outside the box' theme team that runs multi novel length story arcs at various times outside the core story time lines. They would primarily be writing Universe expansion arcs. They'd tell the story of the formation of the Empire City Guard. They'd do a Syndicate series. They'd cover Parmount's rise to power. They might do a run on the early theme agents and the defeat of the Mars Invasion. There might be some pre-Sundering Arcs. If that case the 'future' Gen 3 in intra-solar space would just be one set of stories... an arc that would run ten or fifteen years out in the future from Gen 2.

And, of course, with that many authors around and random ideas popping up; people would be writing some non-Whateley stuff that would go to the Library... and Fan Fic... well, the more regular stories are going up, the more likely we are to have people trying their hand with fan fic. And if the Fan Fic authors are active enough and running their own advisory/mentoring group and recommending specific people/pieces go the publishing route and helping them prepare it; we can't help but have things to publish there.

  • I'm not meaning to bug anyone here but, while reading the plans for Gen 2 & Gen 3 stories, I kinda wondered if there were any plans, probably faaaarrr in the future, for any stories following some of the Gen 1 characters AFTER they left Whateley? Or would that be covered by the proposed Gen 3 stories?

Could I not suspect that using 1st gen characters might not be used with either the 2nd gen or 3rd gen until their years are done due to possible conflicts of usage?

I mean in that if one character is used in a 2nd gen even for a cameo and then we find out said character is killed then there would be a conflict with the two, that is unless one is perhaps mentioned but not interacted and then that could imply something happened to the character in the 1st gen that shouldn't have been given away.

That of course is pure speculation on my part, but I don't dare repudiate such a notion if put more to the question on the off chance that I might be correct for once in my life.

  • Ya. We could alway wave the 'alternate universe' card and tell whatever stories we want and not worry about continuity across generations... but it is far more impressive/bad ass if we can tell two or more generations of stories with sustaining continuity.

It'd be even more bad ass if we could go meta and have a major throughline plot that impacts all the generations while also sustaining continuity within the generations. But I think this would have to be my full time job to stay on top of it that much.

  • There was a Heyoka killed at WA Academy in 2007? No way!

Did it happen in the gym? Sometimes when its still dark in there and people are just starting to come in for the first morning class, it feels like there's something watching from the back corner...
