  • Just curious. Is there any way to consolidate all of the fan fiction/characters from all the many sources onto the new site? Would make life easier for sure for many people like myself who can't seem to get enough. =)

  • I'd love it if all the people who have created and posted WA Universe fan fics were to bring them here and post them. But all we can do is be open to it. While we control the copyright to the Universe property, we did make writing fan fic in the universe a legal derivative creation... and so all those individual authors control what they want to do with their stories. Unless they choose to post them here, we can't 'make' them.

However, we ARE doing some things to more effectively support fan fiction and the development of authors who are writing in our universe; so hopefully that alone will be a great enough draw to bring people (and their stories) here to share with a common supportive community. What we CAN do, though, is provide a place for you to post Whateley fan fic sightings... somewhere that anyone who sees a WA fan fic that we don't have a copy of here, we post a link to it so future readers can track it down. And maybe if enough people track down those authors and say "hey, we're posting a link to your story from 'the' WA site" maybe they'll consider dropping by and posting it here too.

In fact, maybe we can extend that web link list to also include anywhere that people talk about the Whateley Academy 'verse, too. Obviously, we've heavily infested TVTropes over the years... but there are other sites where we have been reviewed, commented upon, or discussed. And sometimes those are places that we would share a common audience (like the Grrl Power comic). So having links to there - good for everyone!

  • What's happening with the Fan Fiction that was in the previous Crystal Hall Forums? Is that lost? Or are we able to retrieve posts from the lost system? Maybe have it up as a "read only" version or something?

  • I asked a similar question earlier.
They're looking into it and they might be able to transfer it in one big chunk or file by file. But it's going to be a while so that they can get the rest of this site up and running. It's in the plans, a little ways away and depending on what happens might be an easy fix, or could take a while.

  • I would say as Dom stated, its a matter of priorities as with abilities. Its not so easy to transfer messages from one site to another due to the nature of the other sites coding.

And that of ensuring there is no hidden deceptions embedded within.

  • I do have all my ten-odd Micro Scenes and the Mezzo origin story (both the published and unpublished/stalled parts) saved here, so I can repost them. I just didn't get around to it yet.

  • I'm already looking at just re-posting my own stuff here, as opposed to the site admins re-posting it from the old files. It could mean small changes, as I edit things and clean up the old text, but I'm willing to do that. If it will save time and allow for beta testing of the new process, I'm game.

  • If it matters any, I have been working on and off for the past month or so on building a tool for exporting the old FUDForum (chboard3) forums, first into OCPortal, and then into a static export. I actually handed a couple production ready iterations off earlier this week to Kristen, though Warren had problems using the first version. While I'm eager to iron out the problems, I will second Ibi in noting that it's a question of priorities for the staff, and they have more than enough on their plates.

  • I'd contribute my few non-canon micro-scenes to a rejuvenated micro-scene section (which doesn't seem to have materialized yet!) but alas, in my vast storehouse of Whateley files (most of which are Gen 1 background stuff), I can't find the Vox trio of stories. I found one I WAS going to publish as fan-fic, but it's now slated for fall 07 as canon, but ... if someone has those Vox/Ayla ones, I'll get them republished. Otherwise - they might have vanished forever. :(

  • I've got all my stuff with the possible exception of one or two micro-scenes that were jokes based on other people's micro-scenes. I'm not sure if I should actually re-post the rest of my micro-scenes into the micro-scenes thread though, as there are like fourteen of them and that would feel kind of spammy. Maybe I should put those in a separate thread and only post new scenes to micro-scenes?

Well, we can attach compressed files here, so you could compress them and then post it...

  • Or someone among the fan fic authors could build a micro-scene anthology and format it / structure it for publication for the official fan fiction publication series.

  • This is why I have saved all my micro scenes and stories to my Deviant art account ( Hidden-Traveler ) and to a word file. I just need the time to get them posted up. -eyeroll-

I agree, I have no problem reposting my stuff so that the Admins can worry about more important things that need to be done.

  • I actually asked them not to repost mine, so that the some minor, and some major changes I've made to better fit canon would be the only copies around.

  • Hmm,

Greatest hits micro scenes sounds like a great idea. How do we want to do it?

In the FanFic discussions (cause anyone can post there) the old style 'anything goes' thread for all the jokes / quick posts, then we could suggest Micro Scenes for promotion and see if authors are willing to polish them for eventual release in a curated 'Micro Scenes' Top level FanFic?

  • Well, a good anthology generally has a theme and a through line, even if there isn't exactly an ongoing plot. So, the first thing to achieve is a collection of a LOT of microscenes. Which, by their nature, are generally about 500 words each +/- 200. You could mix in a short story or two as well (1-5k words each). But you'd probably want at least 40-50k words total for a collection.... which means finding 200k words of good work and then arranging the best 50k words into your collection. Do you need me to dig up the old micro-scenes thread? Or does someone else have a copy of it to save me the time of digging it out of the mangled database?

Here's a quick and dirty collection... Some of them are repeats with a larger posts/page

    Dirtier

Cleanest, some overlap between long and short pages, but should cover everything...

  • Thanks Malady. We should chat about what you have copies of before I spend too much time with digging stuff out of the forums archives. Let me know when you'll have some time, maybe we can have a chat in IRC or on YIM or something.

I haven't gotten everything, but here, tell me if you want it cut down or something?:

40 MB of Crystal Hall HTMLs

Huh. It's 2000+ files... Didn't realize that 'till now...

  • Hmm... I have a full site archive from when I got ftp access in Aug 2014 ... if this has pretty much everything newer than that... it wouldn't take much to rebuild the whole thing from this. :) Certainly easier than rebuilding from the hacked one.

  • The only microscenes I wrote that I liked (and can remember writing them) would be Alex undergoing a Dive the night before the Gun Show, The Next Generation of Team Kimba and Ayla being interviewed regarding the death of Jadis.

If we are reuploading the microscenes, I'd like to edit the Dive and the Interview ones before they get re-upped, mostly for flow issues and minor retcons (Things like removing Ayla's line about "Don't look for the school, you'll never find it" because the detective was Harley, who I didn't recognize, having Ayla's "public" wife being Macrobiotic (which in of itself was a nod to the other person writing the "Jadis Diabolik has been found murdered" fics.) I'm sticking with what I thought caused Ayla and 'nessa to break up, rather than what has since been revealed caused it. That and making it clearer that Alex is in fact fighting the imps and cherubs in his Dive.)

The thing is that apart from Team Kimba TNG, I wrote those directly onto the site, rather than c/ping a copy from my computer, meaning that I don't have an offline copy.

I've probably written more microscenes than i can remember, most of them either involving my OCs or were reactions to other microscenes. I'd like for the ones involving my OCs to not go up just yet and the ones that are reactions to other microscenes to only go up if the original poster agrees.

If Odin/Freya is still around, my part of the Hawthornebury Tales is alright to be released. Wildcard and NGMA's backstories probably have not changed and probably won't be changed

You could always ask around here on the forums to see if someone would be willing to help you edit. I'd offer my own services if I wasn't so busy classes, homework, and other projects.

I really should do that. But I think I'll wait until I have the current chapter finished. Thank you for the offer, but you're right. You have classes, homework, and other projects to focus on. I wish you the best of luck in them.
