  • Odds and Ends was a massive multi-author contribution effort, and you saw our list of authors. Now, the fun part - who wrote which combat finals?
And if you were an author, you can't contribute.

    Hippy v Belphegor
    Ayla v Tissy
Jade v Mule (this one is a gimme!)
Kayda v Chou (the version shown here)
    Lanie (the version shown here)
    Miasma v Pristine
    The Grunts crash
    Adalie v Armadillo
    Jadis v Marty
    Greasy v Kaiju
    G-Force v Haywire
    Venus Inc crash
    Alicia v Long John
    Reach v Razorback
    Tennyo crash

bonus guess - the still-to-be-published vignette:
Who wrote Star League Jr. v Wondercute?

  • Well, I think of Jadis, Marty, and Reach as being Bek's characters, so I'm guessing that she wrote Jadis v Marty, and Reach v Razorback. Alicia was introduced by Morpheus but has mostly been written by Elrod since then, so I'm guessing that Elrod wrote Alicia v Long John. Adalie is also mostly Elrod's, so I'll throw Adalie v Armadillo to him to. The Star League is EE's, as is Lanie, so I'm guessing he wrote both.

  • Actually, Elrod was using Alicia before me, and I just 'borrowed' her for a bit.

You do realize that the author bylines on the various parts included some G2 authors too, don't you? Not to mention Kristin and a certain fanfic author as well?

Well, yes. My guesses assumed that they wrote the other half of the stories.

  • Miasma v Pristine is a gimme, Domoviye already revealed in the story thread he wrote that one.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

  • Given that the students pretty much got out OK, and the ANTS were trashed, its obvious Domovie wrote the ANTS...:)

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

  • If there's ever a final featuring a flying ANT modelled after a pixie or butterfly (particularly if it's programming is based on that Sim tech's four year old daughter), we'll know it's Dom for certain... :D

...unless one of the canon completely loses their mind and somehow manages to convince the other authors that what the campus really needs is the addition of a diminimutive flying trouble magnet whose sugar highs are legendary...

Nope - hence why I said "completely loses their mind", i.e. "pigs will probably fly before this happens."

Conversely, Tink causing chaos with and around numerous other characters in the fanon setting (both fanon original characters and fanon versions of canon characters)... :D

Chaos with method, that makes all students under that banner look crazy but all should be feared in combat, even by the spectators... Yes I know that was a Princess Bride reference but I can't think of an appropriate response....

  • To get back on track here, there hasn't been a LOT of guessing, so let me give you all hte rundown of what's been guessed to date:

    Hippy v Belphegor . . . . (no guesses)
    Ayla v Tissy . . . . . . . . (no guesses)
    Jade v Mule . . . . . . . . . Kristin
    Kayda v Chou . . . . . . . (no guesses)
    Lanie . . . . . . . . . . . . . EE
    Miasma v Pristine . . . . . Dom
    The Grunts crash . . . . . . (no guesses)
    Adalie v Armadillo . . . . . Elrod
    Jadis v Marty . . . . . . . . . Bek
    Greasy v Kaiju . . . . . . . .(no guesses)
    G-Force v Haywire . . . . . (no guesses)

    Alicia v Long John . . . . . Elrod
    Reach v Razorback . . . . . Bek
    Tennyo crash . . . . . . . . . (no guesses)

    SLJ v wondercute EE

Key - red = no guess. green = guess (not necessarily right)

C'mon - I know you all like to speculate and guess and try to outwit the authors - don't let it be said that I outwitted ALL of you!
And as a hint, of the guesses, at least 2 1/2 are right. (Figure out how one is 1/2 right :) )

  • OK, since ElrodW very much wants us todo this (sigh).

So, assuming ElrodW is being careful with his Author contributions:

We have the following Authors for all three parts:
EE Nalley, Morpheus, Bek Corbin, Kristin Darken & Domoviye

And we have the following for only the first two parts:
    Neomagus

And Wasamon only for the third.

Now, from the writing style, I'm going to guess that EE, Kristin and Domoviye where involved in the main plot that held it all together, while Morpheus & Bec were writing combat finals, and got their name each part as "Canon" authors and (basically) sounding boards, and may not actually have written combat finals in all three parts.

This of course leaves Neomagus & Wasamon as only writing combat finals and only getting writing credit when "their" combat final was published, these leaves us with at least two combat finals for Neomagus ad one for Wasamon and we know what parts they where.

So, Wild Ass Guessing out of the way, lets get the list back out:
    Part one combat finals:
Hippy v Belphegor . . . . First combat final up and not really speaking to me with an author's "feel", so I'm going to guess one of our unknowns.
Ayla v Tissy . . . . . . . . difficult one, we have somebody basically trying to write another authors character. Again, the style doesn't talk to me, so I'm ruling out Elrod, Morpheus & EE who all have definite combat style writing. I;m not feeling a Bek or a Kristin here, both have writing styles that don't appear to be this, also very different style to our first, so I'm thinking out other unknown Author.
Now others may know Domoviye and Neomagus' styles better then me, but i have no feel for Neomagus, so that leaves me guessing which I think is Domoviye, and Hippy just feels more that way to me. So I'm guessing Hippy for Domoviye, and Ayla for Neomagus
    Jade v Mule . . . . . . . . . Kristin - I think this ones has been spoiled in the forums already
Kayda v Chou . . . . . . . I doubt ElrodW is going to let anyone else write his main character.
    Lanie . . . . . . . . . . . . . EE - Same, but with Kayda as well I'm calling a double-up, so EE & ElrodW and that's our first part done!

    Part 2
Miasma v Pristine . . . . . So first off, Miasma and Pristine. No Canon Author's have adopted them, which makes it interesting. No main plot points investigated, so I'm calling it for out "new" authors again. I'm going to go Domoviye as my call.
    The Grunts crash . . . . . . Interesting writing style, doesn't fit any I'm familiar with, I'm calling Neomagus again.
Adalie v Armadillo . . . . . Amalie is ElrodW's character, so I'm calling him writing the combat final
Jadis v Marty . . . . . . . . . Bek, as Jadis is a Bek Character. Marty is also a defacto EE character, so I'm calling buddy up on this one, and so ends Part 2.

OK, two parts down, just double-checking … and yes, I've covered Neomagus having at least one each in both of them.

    Part 3
Greasy v Kaiju . . . . . . . . Hmm, hints of Greasy getting lucky again, ElrodW was the other time that was mentioned, I'm calling ElrodW again this time.
G-Force v Haywire . . . . . OK, neither character has a known writer, so I'm guessing either Domoviye or Wasamon. Now, robbing the bank just feels more "left field and crazy" and well, sorry Wasamon, but that's Domoviye territory.
Venus Inc crash . . . . . . . Now Loophole and Kayda, this should be another EE / ElrodW double team, but I'm going to go left field her and call it a Morpheus written one, the Poise POV just feels more that way to me.
    Alicia v Long John . . . . . ElrodW character
    Reach v Razorback . . . . . Bek's Character
    Tennyo crash . . . . . . . . . Tenno's powers get a major nerf, and that just screams "Kristin" to me.

SLJ v wonder cute I'm going with everyone else in the forum and guessing this is a Neomagus

OK, so that's as well as I can guess, with me reasons, and I personally think I'm somewhere in the "half-right" ball park, but I'm sure ElrodW can't wait to grade me and make riddler like comments about it all

Eh, you're pretty close with the "half-right" comment by my reckoning. You got about 9-10 correct (barring author team-ups that even I'm not aware of) out of the total, so that's pretty good.

That said, some of your incorrect guesses are just plain hilarious. And no, I won't tell you which ones. 8-)

Nice deductive reasoning, but you're wrong on a LOT of it.
I'll give you Kristin on Jade.
And I'll give you Kayda v Chou

  • You forgot to turn Dom blue for Miasma and Pristine. He got it, and it was pretty much out of the bag since I commented on it a lot.

OK, since your giving a hint that means that our guesses are probably wrong.

You know, upgrading to Vignette, lots of Mischief (its Wondercute! There would be howls and rioting if there was not), hmm. Morpheus?

  • I'm surprised none of you have commented that I reasoned Wasamon must have done a Combat Final in the third part … and then didn't bother guessing any of the combat finals as his?

That one wasn't a secret. I went into detail about it on the Odds and Ends thread. and you did guess it, as did someone else.

    One at a time.

Hippy v. Belphegor. That was (drum roll please) ... me.

But first is Ayla v. Tissy. And people are hyper-curious about who did that one, aren't you?

You did Wine Women and Ayla, Date Night and seem to incorporate Ayla the most since Diane stopped writing.

    Could it be Tennyo's Crash?

  • Is the Grunts crash just discussed, like the Tennyo Crash?

Well, possibly even less, as from part 1, it seems we don't get event descriptions like we did with Tennyo, and there was just chatter about what they're gonna face from Tolman, Bardue and the rest?

Whoops... Just missed Part 2 in my search.

Miasma v Pristine - Domoviye (but that was kind of a given considering discussions of O&E)

OOPS - I see I had that listed as a 'known' answer on the list earlier.

Okay, so the Grunts crash (smackdown).

    The author is ...... me.

Should have guessed from how nasty it was to them :)

  • My guess about Greasy v Kaiju, has to be Domo with how Greasy used his grease, some of the almost wacky yet serious moments, and some of it seemed almost Tink-like to me. Would have guessed sooner but power is down at home, at library right now. Might have power back by Monday if lucky, or sooner if dad can get emergency generator working finally.

Thank You for story comments appreciated and help me know me they are being read and liked. :-) Note: My story comments can't nor are trying to replace reading the stories, simply my way of enjoying them and letting the authors know I enjoy them.

I think I'm jaded, with anti-heroes and heroic villains and stuff, a hero, well, a student, doing a 'bank robbery' doesn't feel notable other than it's funny/interesting?

    Same with the flirting?

That's the point - it was meant to be amusing, especially after all the serious thumpings and injuries and such. Of course, Miasma v Pristine was amusing as well. So was 'the great pie fight'. But others were just brutal - Hippy, the Grunts, Venus Inc, Lanie ...

So I tried something lighthearted with G-Force to break the tension.

  • Personally I enjoyed the plan as a whole, going on a bit of a tangent like that to free the hostage in a non-violent manner. G-Force going along with it so easily was sufficiently in his character I felt that it diminished the effect for me a little, perhaps? The flirting was amusing though, and it makes me wonder what other embarrassing incidents have occurred during combat finals (specifically those Peeper would have less concern for).

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

    This made my day. Thanks.

About the bank robbery, Elrod you kept telling me about how great the bankrobbing scene was without giving any details I was ready to try blackmailing you into showing it to me.
And as I told him as I was reading it was really nicely done. The flirting part had me going "Doesn't he realize he's flirting with a robot?" and having it pointed out to him at the end really sold it.

    Ayla v Tissy - Elrod
    Jade v Mule - Kristin
    Kayda v Chou - Elrod
    Lanie - Elrod and EE

    Reach v Razorback - Wasamon
    Tennyo crash - Dom

Star League Jr. v Wondercute - Neomagus
(Still waiting its turn in the publication queue)

How'd y'all do? I know there were several mis-guesses, and several which were surprisingly right.

And I'm a little disappointed that there was not more discussion of the Great Pie Fight final. (If you hadn't surmised, the afternoon I was writing that, I'd just finished watching "The Great Race" with it's huge pie fight. I just HAD to so something like that.)

Unless someone raises a fuss, I'm not going to mess with it, since it was originally intended (at the time part 2 was published even) that it be in the story.

Well, even if the part I actually wrote ended up getting split off into its own vignette, I still contributed to a lot of the ideas that went into this one...I'd like to think that merits including me...

But if you'd rather it lists only authors that contributed actual writing, then yeah, I guess it would be appropriate to remove my name from it...
