  • I love books that make me laugh out load in crowds, or as I said in the title, snort milk out of my nose. So in the interest of sharing, and getting leads on other books I started this thread up.

First for your consideration, Helen Keeble, author of "Fang Girl, and "He's no Angel. Both of these are young adult, and they both poke a bit of fun at certain young adult tropes without being parodies at the same thing. Mostly they just throw concepts that make you laugh out loud. Your millage may vary.

In Fang Girl the author goes back to the old Vampire tales and how you could distract a vampire by tossing Poppy seeds in front of him. He will unable to proceed until he picks them all up. From this she came up with the idea that Vampires all suffer from OCD. The real reason elder vampires can't enter a home is not because of any magical barrier, but because they would be overcome with an overpowering urge to straighten it up.

Which is one reason one such elder started up Ikea, with the idea of promoting a minimalist life style among people.

In "He's no Angel" our protagonist finds himself attending an all girl boarding school, straight out of a Harem Anime. And while he does get some attention from the girls his own age, his real fan base, much to his disgust, are the preteen girls who totally adore him, in a stalkerish fan girl manner. A knock on his door at night is very likely to reveal some little twelve year old hyperventilating while clutching a bouquet of flowers, that she has plucked from the headmistresses private garden.

So does anyone else out there have some books they could recommend in the laugh out loud category?

  • Two of my favorites for laughing out loud are "Winterdance" by Gary Paulsen, and "Thief's Covenant" by Ari Marmell.

Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod, is Paulsen's personal account of his first attempt at running the Iditarod. In it, Paulsen endeavors to demonstrate that only crazy people run the Iditarod. I think that he succeeds, rather beautifully.

Thief's Covenant is a YA fantasy novel about a girl and her god. I like to describe it as the YA version of Small Gods crossed with the Lies of Locke Lamora. Widdershins' concept of logic is a bit more colorful than most, leading to quotes like this one from the second book in the series:

False Covenant wrote: “The resulting sound wasn't quite a squawk, wasn't quite a yelp, wasn't quite a gasp. As best she could describe it, it sounded like an angry chicken slapping a puppy with a fish.”
