I have been trying to write a fanfic piece for the Whateley Universe on and off for about 2 years now, wanting to become an active part of this community and I have now concluded that I’m not a writer at heart. Crucially I find I don’t enjoy trying the construct a plot or drama for my characters to live out. Still wanting to give something back this community that has given me so much I’m now trying to ‘donate’ any characters that that have survived my frustrated delete spamming.
My objective for this thread is to create a resource Whateley writers could skim over when trying to flesh out the side characters needed to populate worlds and bring them to life.
If anyone wishes to join me in this I ask that you follow these guideline to keep this as functional as possible.
1) Donation. Please don’t add requests to your inclusions. Any character on this thread should be able to be modified and used in any way by any writer without any obligations towards the one who posted it. (that is a lot of “any”s )
2) Character. Try to post while characters here and not just power sets. Reading one the characters here should create a mental image of a person; with an identity and personality. It shouldn’t read as if it came from an MCO powers testing facility.
3) Relevance. As mentioned above these character should feel like they belong in the world around someone’s protagonist. This means that they should both belong in a Whateley universe setting and that it is reasonable to expect them in situations and locations another writer is likely to find.
To that end here are my first contributions to what I hope becomes a useful tool to the writers of Whateley works.
———————————————————————————————————————————
John Carver (aka: Hummingbird).
John is patient and resolute, to a fault. From conversation to combat his approach is always to wait and observe until the full course of events is planned out and then to act out that plan come hell or high water. Whilst very active around home he doesn’t play many team sports, instead preferring running, riding and pre-planned exercise routines.
The jargon of John’s power is ‘energizer’ and ‘warper’. In layman’s terms he’s a flying speedster with the extra trick of being able to instantly rotate his inertia up to 90 degrees giving him an instant cornering maneuver (nicknamed a pivot). These pivots don’t help in speeding up or slowing down so when holding back to observe he has the habit of bouncing around a few cubic meters like a fly in a bottle.
The code-name Hummingbird is actually due to the set of four short wings with rainbow patterned feathers on his back. John will and does complain loudly and vehemently about these wings, which are usually covered by a coat or jacket. In truth, however, something about the way those colors frame his tall lithe figure when he takes his shirt off is deeply appealing in a way he is really not ready to admit to himself.
———————————————————————————————————————————
Dominic Collins (aka: Bloodkin)
The Arcanist is a c-list super-villain with a fascination for collecting magical texts. Some theorize that his library is the largest store of magical knowledge owned by an individual, although it’s hard to check. His villain status stems not only from his preferred means of collecting such books but also that (with one exception) he considered ’taboo’ synonymous with ‘interesting’. That exception is the Mythos works, which he knows to be mind warping abominations best left along.
Why discus the Arcanist to introduce Dominic? Because we learn a lot from those who raise us.
Dom this the Arcanist’s biological nephew and the heir to his estate and legacy. Dom sees the Arcanist (real name Boris) as a teacher rather than a guardian and feels a closer kinship to the sole other occupant of their house, their estate manager Mary Weller. Mary is truly the one who raised Dom and ingrained in him a sense of morality and compassion that would do a saint proud.
There was some conflict inside Dom for a while: Mary’s ethics didn’t cover the rules of magic and he had inherited Boris’ curiosity, quickly finding that he was uniquely skilled at necromancy and blood rites. For a while Dom had no idea how to reconcile his thirst for study in forbidden magics and his knowledge that he must do no harm.
His manifestation proved to be his salvation. A low level manifestor, Dom can create blood in his hands and exert limited control over it. This O- blood is stable enough to work in transfusions and, more importantly for Dom, has an etheric identity. This means that his manifested blood can serve in blood rites, without harming sacrifices to obtain it! Coupled with both his control to shape how his blood flows and pools with great dexterity and his already vast, and growing, knowledge of the field of blood magic the world may come to thank Mary for ensuring that Dom will live to do no harm.
———————————————————————————————————————————
Marie Logan (no code name provided).
Marie’s MID lists only her real name but people around her small town can be heard referring to her as ‘supermom’. Marie is busily, and helpfully, involved in almost everything: Cooking for the church bake sale, Costume design for her daughters first play, Providing demonstrations for her sons amateur robotics club, woodworking projects around the home and even aiding in the beginners classes of both tai chi and muay thai. Laziness is the work of devil in her eyes and any who embrace it will face all the fury her Scottish heritage can produce.
Marie’s low level paragon trait lets her learn the basics of most physical skills very quickly and as an energy absorber she can use electricity to cure fatigue. She won’t be stronger or faster but she goes a year at a time without sleep and seems to suffer no noticeable consequences.
Her mutant status is an open secret around town, she has never admitted it but no-one really has to ask, but she is so helpful to everyone that few are willing to give her any issue about it. Marie realizes that God has given her the power to make the most out of every minute and she will live up the that expectation.

But I don't think it's got what you're looking for, but I forget.
I feeling like I'm shamefully plugging...

Need an MHT reader for these, the shorter bits are other Google Drive ids.:

Well, if you're willing to download a 40 MB file, I've got this archive of the old site:
40 MB of Crystal Hall HTMLs
It's 2000+ files... Focus on the Bad Ideas and 2008 Freshman Threads, for the Character Ideas.
There's also this:
15 MB of Crystal Hall PDFs
But I don't think it's got what you're looking for, but I forget.

So is this just for if you aren't going to be writing your characters yourself, or can it also be for sharing character ideas that haven't been implemented yet?

If you have an idea for a character and would be happy if they appeared in another persons work then feel free to share. Whether it comes from an abandoned project or an concept you haven't implemented yet is irrelevant.
The only point I'm really going to stress is that this thread should be a convenient source of inspiration. If you put an idea here it is released into the wild and can be used, and changed, by anyone who wants to.

I was going to write out the character details, but then it got really long. I don't write simple characters.
Very very simplified version is, (name under development) Char can astral project, and while projecting, visualize himself as the hero in a situation, and perform almost any maneuver he can visualize. He's a total action film geek, with a hero complex for his cousin (an exemplar), who is dead. He channels her spirit, and is slowly becoming more like her.
Actual detailed version: docs.google.com/document/d/1i12PhxXdCksN...ACM/edit?usp=sharing
