  • I'm trying to think of a way that 99% of the decedents of a lost Wstern court colony end up with out magic. I was inspired by Terry Brook's elves in the Shanarra series.

  • What do you mean "Not Deaf"?

Do you mean like Glyph? If so, then do basically the same thing, but have everyone inherit the curse?

  • Maybe lean more toward it being impossible for their wells to be lit? Or have such tiny wells for some reason that they can't hold on to any essence at all.

Maybe a curse that repels essence in close contact? That way they can see it, but are unable to use it to cast spells. If given a battery, the battery drains upon coming into contact with them.

  • The Sundering was effective because magic was such a core part of the Sidhe makeup. Maybe this branch chose to redesign themselves and eliminate that attack vector, even if it meant having less facility with magic.

  • Depends on the what precisely you mean by "without magic" but:

A (contagious?) neurological condition leaves them entirely numb to magic, not even feeling the subtle warmth of essence a human mage experiences. Magic still dwells within them, entwined in their genetic make-up, but the training to harness that magic in even the most rudimentary ways is impossibly difficult without some feedback.

  • The Sidhe are magic, it’s how they are come to be, they can’t not have magic and still be Sidhe.

On the other hand because the Sidhe are magic they need magic just to live, they used to get it from world tree that are no more. There isn’t the great amounts of magic around now that there used to be, anyone not a Great Lord of the Sidhe would be hard pressed just collecting enough magic to go on living. It not inconceivable for lower class Sidhe to have their wells lit but spend all their time meditating and collecting essence just to keep the spells that are necessary for them to live running, so even though they are magic and they are wizards, they have no abilities to do magic.

  • Ok, I've come to realize this idea won't work the way I'd wanted. Thanks for the input.
